What a wonderful remembrance... I'm sure that the cafe owners provided you tea out of gratitude for the sacrifice your ancestors made for France. I've found the French, especially those in the countryside to be very kind.
Dubai 1st Trip You have inspired me to visit Dubai and we finally booked the trip. I have been reading your blog for over 1 year. Any tips or things we must do in Dubai? We are going to be there on Dec 28th. Thanks!! :)
Thanks for the support! Wow - a year? Glad I can inspire! :) For Dubai, especially at this time of year, there are all kinds of amazing things to do. I personally loved all the malls - they are each unique (well, all the same stores, but the themes or decorations are various). Depending on your time here, visit one or all of the following malls: Dubai Mall (definitely! largest mall, watch fountain show at night, see Burj Khalifa), Mall of the Emirates (ski slope) and Ibn Battuta (beautiful themed decorations). While at one of these malls, I would suggest trying a VIP movie (Dubai Mall's is the best). You should probably see Burj Khalifa - if you book early it is 100AED as opposed to 400AED - and take the main elevator; if they try to herd you into the maintenance elevator, politely decline to wait for the real one). In addition, if you can head to Abu Dhabi I DEFINITELY suggest going to see the Grand Mosque, which I think is incredible and peaceful at night especially; you can also visit Ferrari World or the Emirates Palace as a day trip. Do a desert safari. All the hotels here are nice, but I love the Rotana hotel chain. Go to Jumeirah Beach Walk and/or Dubai Marina. Visit the souqs. Burj al Arab (you can get tea there for a few hundred, but is it worth it?). Ride a camel. Eat Arabic foods - yum! If you want any further advice on the above, just let me know. Enjoy the trip!
Airport rankings What a great blog. I wish other people would write about this topic. i'm glad to see Detroit near the top of your list. It is a fantastic airport. I'm always happy when I can fly through that one. As for Charlotte, I agree it is comfortable but I rarely get out of there on time. Usually delayed because of thunderstorms. It is too the point I'll do anything to fly into another city. Chicago always has long delays for all kinds of reasons. I generally have pretty good luck in Atlanta. Will you be in D.C. in the next few weeks? If so we should try to get together. Really enjoyed your airport reviews.
Thank you! Thank you so much for your terrific response. I have not been thru Charlotte in about ten years, but was often through there when going home during college, so it is interesting to hear your perspective. Detroit is the most amazing because about 15 years ago, i hated it but they remodeled it and it is one the places I TRY to route through. I just flew through Atlanta in April and had the same experience. I won't be in DC for a while, unfortunately, but when I am, I'll let you know! :)
Interesting that you picked Helsinki for #1... It seemed rather sterile to me when I was there in April 2013. I'll have to pay more attention when I'm there in April 2015...overnighting at the attached Hilton between connecting flights. I agree that Atlanta and Dallas should be at the bottom, as should LAX, Newark and JFK. I'm surprised you haven't been to more Asian airports, many of which rank near to top of any travelers list. So I expect to read more blogs about your travels to that region.
Friends make all the difference The biggest change here has been the hiring of more people, so now there are people to do things with. Whereas previously I was basically by myself so it got boring pretty quick. Now it is just fun to be social.
Per previous recommendations... "try for the clients who do actually want to work WITH me and who will actually pay us without fighting." Anyway, congratulations on having battled successfully through the immigration and medical bureaucracies. Does this mean you are going to extend your contract beyond this year? After all, the good seems to be outweighing the bad.
Extending my stay Yes, it appears I will be staying for another year probably. I am just now getting my Residency permit for Qatar, so who wants to go through that whole process and only enjoy it for a little bit! ?! My parents are sad, but chances are I won't be able to move near them anyway, so what is really the difference?
Beaches I have also noticed the trash on beaches in the Middle East. You really couldn't walk barefoot on the beach in Aqaba (Jordan) due to all the broken glass, bottle caps, and cigarette butts lying in wait for unsuspecting bare feet. The only clean beaches I've seen in that part of the world were in Israel.
Litter It is quite unfortunate. Seeing people litter is my number one pet peeve. We usually wind up picking up a few pieces of trash as we clean up, but there is too much for any one person. I noted in Salalah, Oman, however, that they do hire people to clean. I saw a man in uniform at 6:00am on the beach picking up trash. It makes such a difference and gives you pride in your community.
THE COLOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The colour of the water seems so different to the ones I have seen on other seas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lovely, Hugs from Argentina.
I was an engineer on a long term assignment, first in Dubai and then in Qatar. During this time, I took advantage of my nice paycheck and proximity to other places to start seeing the world. After three years, I decided to take a much earned break and traveled for a year. After working about two years in New York State, I am on my way back to Dubai.... full info
