What a sensational one it was. Sat at a table to have dinner and Jane says, "I don't want to talk to anyone so don't interact with anyone." Going to be difficult me thinks as sitting next to us separated only by a chair are two gorgeous young women. Jane gets up to get her 2nd helping and one of the young women, now known as Kristin, from Germany, asks me a question. (Lee is from South Korea). Mmmmmm! Being polite and sociable and with Jane's warning... at the forefront of my mind, what else could I do but respond. Both speak numerous languages but not to be outdone we hold our own in English!! 2 hours later we conclude our conversation and exchange of vital communication mediums. We leave on a high and come across ... read more

At 12pm the 50% mark of our trip ticked over. We celebrated in a park with a large, cold glass of StrongBow Cider. Later, Jane added to the celebrations with a wine from a vendor, “Wine with a View”. Today was about exploring Lisbon by using the Hop On Off bus which we did numerous times so as to walk to see the places of interest for us. We definitely put the kilometres into our legs today. Again, the sun shone strong and with the light coloured cobblestones, predominantly white walls of buildings the heat was definitely felt. The numerous parks with their large foliaged trees are many and not only do they add beauty to the city but give relief from the sun. From the “Parque Eduarde VII” we had a superb view to the ... read more

Today was all about travelling to Lisbon. Waiting for the train we engaged in an informative dialogue with a café (small business) owner about the state of affairs in Portugal (not happy Jan). Not only was he a well-educated person but he had worked for the government and financial institutions in Portugal as well as the US. We were able to learn a few things as well as have a few affirmed. Australia, don’t complain. The first half of the train journey saw us in conversation with a young NZ couple heading to Canada on a 2 year working visa; he a journalist and she a nurse. We observe and engage with local people (travel = people, sights, food) to really try and find out about their culture/country. An observation that doesn’t require interaction is seeing ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Lagos June 15th 2018

Today was all about the Lagos coastline from the Marina de Lagos to Ponta da Piedade to Prado do Porto de Mos at sea level by small open boat in the morning and at cliff height by foot in the afternoon. By the end it turned out to be very tiring for both of us. The sun shone strong all day and by the time we had finished our boat exploration the wind had picked up and increased further during the afternoon. We were pleased that we had chosen to do the boat tour early. There were 3 crew, the skipper, a female trainee and an old local sea dog along for the ride and a couple from England and us. Heaps of room to move. The skipper took us right alongside the cliff faces, in ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Faro June 14th 2018

Today we said “Hello” to Portugal and to the small city of Faro, the capital of southern Portugal’s Algarve region, on the coast. Our bus trip, even though only short, stopped at a number of small towns, which gave us an insight into the south western part of Spain before entering Portugal. Coming into Faro it was hills and valleys covered in vegetation or crops of oranges, vines or vegetable crops. After walking around for quite a while, as well as t...aking an hour’s small boat trip out onto the Ria Formosa lagoon in the early evening, we were able to see that the dunes had created small islands and little peninsulas that protected a large area of marshes, channels and islets. Local fishermen were spotted out as well as an oyster farm. A sandy shoreline ... read more

We passed through many small and a few not-so-small towns on our way to Lagos where will stay for two days. We booked our bus and accommodation the night before. Much cheaper. Live and learn or is it travel and learn? It was a gastronomic time for us today particularly 1 – 3.30pm. Absolutely gastronomic. Lagos is a beautiful place in southern Portugal’s Algarve region where the glorious beaches dominate. More of that tomorrow. The marina stands out in the town centre with yachts of all sizes moored and small motorized tenders ferrying tourists on various sea tours. From our brief stay so far we can see that Lagos is a lively town with numerous eateries and as the weather is sunshine tourists like ourselves are in our element. We are eagerly looking forward to tomorrow. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Córdoba June 13th 2018

We took an early morning ‘side trip’ to Cordoba (a place that Jane has wanted to visit since I have known her), which resulted in a guided tour of the majestic Alcazar of the Catholic Kings and its purely magnificent gardens (as they all happen to be here in Spain), the Jewish quarter, Synagogue, and the monumental site of the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba. The majority of side streets that we walked were flower lined and our senses were enjoying a high with va...rious aromas wafting through the air. We did, as usual, try the local cuisine. The photos of inside the Mosque-Cathedral, with all its long history, do not satisfactorily convey the vastness or skilled architecture / engineering of the place. It is an exceptional monument, still in everyday use for religious purposes, and to an ... read more
