A very comfortable and unrushed train journey to Seville. Jane read and dozed while I viewed the ever changing countryside with its mountains, undulating hills covered with olive groves, grass fields for animal feed, sunflower crops and cereal crops as well as small farm hamlets scattered along the sides of the gentle valleys. Seville! A new experience for Jane and myself was the taxi ride from the station to our accommodation through the narrowest of narrow streets enclosed by high walled buildings; that no one could fit either side of the vehicle. Jane felt a little claustrophobic as the ride progressed. Our hidden but once we saw our destination all was well. This cozy, informal hotel is set in a restored 18th-century property in the Barrio de Santa Cruz district and is a 5-10 minute walk ... read more

Ernest Hemingway wrote of Ronda in his book, “Death in the Afternoon”: “… and we shall meet face to face the abrupt beauty of the Tajo … It is to Ronda where you have to go, if you ever go to Spain. The whole city and its surroundings are a romantic decoration. A pretty spot. It has been built in a circle of mountains on a plateau; the plateau is cut by a gorge which divides it into two cities …, after the bullfights they carry the dead horses to the edge of this rocky place where the birds, who have been waiting for their turn all day, fling themselves on the remains.” Today, Jane did not fling me from the edge, so I lived to hike to the bottom of the Tajo Gorge with her ... read more

There are a few things that cannot escape you in Spain. A house or building may be ‘run-down’ but you can bet your bottom dollar that the door will be immaculate. Another are that the window edges will be painted to have them stand out. They usually have flowers adorning them too. The paths, squares and street roads will be cobble stone with a patterned design for sure. The hit-you-in-your-face or should I say stomach is that they definitely do close down from 2-3 o’clock to 8; even later for some. Also, the variety and number of seating benches available for use. Trees and plants are aplenty in every street. The not-so-good stand-out is that many, many people smoke; old and young. Today we walked various ‘walking routes’ as suggested by a book given to us ... read more

The day began very bumpily indeed. We were up at 5 and reached the train station by 6 for the 6.45 train to Ronda which turned out ‘not’ to be a train but a bus to Santa Ana about halfway to Ronda and ‘then’ it was a train into Ronda. Caused the heart to speed up when, due to language constraints and no English signage, we have out tickets checked and are told, “No, you must take the bus first.” The positive was that we didn’t have to go to the bus station, which is located in another location. As the train pulled into Ronda I saw that there were literally hundreds of people of all ages standing on the platform very close to the sides of the train waiting to greet me. As the automatic ... read more

“… as I gently drove the ball past the close-in fieldsman to mid-on for an easy single it brought up the half century partnership …” Yes, day 50 and what a day it was. A walking tour of the old city took us to places we would not have dreamed of going. The guide was informative, communicated with sincerity and passion that showed his genuine love for his city. From small squares bustling with people and traders, through little markets in narrow lanes, old churches and buildings, musicians, eating establishments of all sorts, views, the appearing and disappearing river, the walk had something for everyone. Lunch for us was a renowned tapas restaurant, Las Manueles, where I let Jane order both the food and drinks. The result, apart from being ‘full’ … get to the hotel ... read more

Day 49 Granada, The Alhambra – I defy anyone not to enjoy The Alhambra. If you’re not into palaces’ then the gardens will grip you. Jane was ‘into’ both; I was more garden/park inclined and I wasn’t left disappointed but in awe. If you’re into both then you’ll be in heaven. Plus, if one wants to know more about this extraordinary site, just go research it … and then … visit it. I cannot do it credit with a few lines here. One could take a thousand photos and the great difficulty would then be in choosing which ones would be selected for a folder or an album. Every time we took a step higher or lower, walked around a wall, looked over an edge, looked up above, it was a photo shot due to the ... read more

The vistas today were far different from our previous few days. We had chosen to travel by coach so as to see the vast amount of countryside and small towns we would be passing by and through. We weren’t to be disappointed, even though we arrived at our accommodation pretty tired out. Not having much of an idea of the landform structure or use in Spain, all of today was a learning experience. The ruggedness and aridness of the journey did surprise us. We did not see or pass over any rivers, however, we did pass over many a river bed, both wide and narrow that had not seen water in a long time. One could tell that when it did rain, it rained in torrents, as the erosion of the ridges had formed many gullies ... read more
