It has been a while since I updated the blog but here is a brief entry about our adventure in China! After spending a couple days in Sapa we headed over to Lao Cai and then to the boarder crossing. The lady from our hotel in Sapa had arranged to have her friend help us through the boarder she followed us from one side to the other all the way until we were in the bus to Kunming. Crossing the boarder was easy had to fill out papers they checked out temperatures and rummaged through our bags, got a bit worried when they found my microphone and started asking questions about our jobs but it was all ok and they didn’t take our lonely planet away so that was good! Once on the other side we ... read more

I know its been a while since I last wrote! Been quite busy with travelling but here is an entry I should have posted ages ago!!!! On Wednesday the 1st of July we set off for Halong Bay, we booked a two night three day tour, on a Junk which only had four cabins therefore a maximum capacity of 8 people. A mini van came to pick us up at 8 am and we set off to Halong city, halfway to Halong city we stopped at this silk factory thing which sold a lot of souvenirs at very expensive prices, but it seems everyone stops there for the break so we just walked around in boredom for about 20 mins before setting off again. The journey from Hanoi to Halong City took about three hours. We ... read more

On Sunday the 21st we set off bright and early to do the long ride through the mountains from Da Lat to Nha Trang. Early in the morning and up in the mountains the air was fresh and it felt like perfect weather to cycle. The van took us to where we would start cycling and off we started, during the first uphill I was already feeling the strain! But Steve kept pushing me to keep going and I did and it wasn't so bad in the end, the uphills were going up and down up and down, on one of the downhills there was some sand on which I slid and nearly did a bad fall but I managed to save it just in time ( not too sure how!!) After about an hour we ... read more

Hi! So yesterday we did a hike up in the mountains and countryside. There was six of us doing the hike plus three guides! The total distance we walked was 18 Km lots of ups and downs and two very scary bridges going across the river, these bridges are used by the farmers often to take the bags of coffee beans across, we had trouble crossing using both hands to hold on!!! We walked through the coffee plantations and hiked up a mountain from which we had an amazing view! We had lunch at the top of the mountain our guides set up this amazing picnic bread ham, tomatoes, cucumber, pineapple, lichies, bananas, peanut butter, cheese! It was great we all sat down in the middle of nowhere at the top of the mountain. We then hiked ... read more

Hi! So we are now in Da lat which is great so far we arrived yesterday after a 8 hour bus ride along the winding roads up the mountains! We are staying in a lovely hotel called Dreams although our room is on the top floor and we have to climb up all the stairs every time we are on the same floor as the Jacuzzi!!!! Its outdoors with a view of Da lat which is quite nice in the cold weather! It's not that cold here more like light jumper weather which is a lovely refreshing change! As soon as you walk into the streets though the Easy Riders come and try to make you book a tour with them, the easy riders are guys on motorbikes that take you around for either day trips ... read more

Alright so it’s been a while since I last wrote an entry! So last time I wrote we were just leaving Siem Reap, well we then spent a good number of nights in Phnom Penh. On our first day in Phnom Penh (Steve’s birthday!) we went to the Tuol Sleng museum which used to be a school which was then transformed into a camp where prisoners were kept and tortured and the killing fields (Cheung Ek) which is where more than 17,000 victims most of them from Tuol Sleng were killed and then buried in mass graves. There is a big glass tower at the Killing fields where more then 8000 skulls are on display. That night when we returned to our hotel (which btw was great, it had a swimming pool!) I felt terrible my ... read more

Its 7 am and we are waiting for our bus which will take us to the capital of Cambodia, Phom Penh! Two days ago we went to see the Temples of Angkor, we woke up at 4 am and a tuk tuk came to pick us up at 5 am. We arrived at Angkor Wat around 5:15 Am in time for the sunrise. The sunrise for pictures was not too impressive but seeing the day start and seeing Angkor Wat becoming clearer was definitely impressive! After sunrise we went inside the temple and started walking around the endless corridors, it’s huge! And the pillars and walls are pretty much covered in carvings, the amount of detail and work! After Angkor Wat we went to Angkor Thom, inside Angkor Thom we went to Bayon which was one ... read more

Yesterday we woke up bright and early, well at around 7 am packed our bags and had breakfast. We then took a bus to the Northern Bus Terminal from there we took another bus that was to take us over to the Thai- Cambodian border. The bus journey lasts approximately 5 hours. The bus journey was fine, a little boring and long! Towards the end of the journey a weird show was put on the TV some kind of weird dancing-singing show the dancing was a weird, stiff and provocative. We got dropped off at a station and then had to take a Tuk-tuk to the border, we first got dropped at this place which was not the border and we were worried that we were going to have a scam but it turned out to ... read more

Hey! Well we survived the storm! To answer an older question the spider from yesterdays blog was just a little bigger than the palm of my hand and yes it is quite nasty! This morning saw a little iguana with a bright blue head! Really cool and pretty! Anyways right now we are supposed to be in Kanchanaburi but the plan didn't really work out. We took a bus today at 10:45 am to Nakhonsawan and from there we were supposed to take a bus to Kanchanaburi, all good the bus to Nakhonsawan was great comfortable and everything =) the journey took about three hours. We got to Nakhonsawan and straight away started getting harassed by touts " where are you going??" we escaped from them and went to a little office thing and asked about ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Sukhothai May 27th 2009

So we are now in Sukhothai today we spent the day at the Sukhothai Historical park which has ruins from the 13th and 14th centuries it contains 193 ruins over 70 square kilometers! It has 26 temples! Although we saw only 6 of them! So we started of the day waking up a bit late of course and heading of once again in the peak heat, we had to catch this ghetto bus that took us to the old city, once there we rented bicycles for the day ( 60 cents each! ) First we started a little of route because Thai maps are stupidly confusing and out of scale, by the time we had finally made it to where we wanted to be we were drenched and had to take a break in the shade. ... read more
