Europe » Spain » Canary Islands December 11th 2006

Early this month we hopped on a plane and headed over to the Canary Islands for 10 days. They are a group of Spanish islands, but are off the coast of southern Morocco. We visited three separate islands while there; Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife. Fuerteventura My friend Stephan had recently moved to Fuerteventura and opened his house to us to stay at during the 3 1/2days we were there. Though Fuerteventura is a bit more remote and not as frequented by tourists, this was our favorite island! Upon our arrival, we met with Stephan (who was at work), picked up our rental car and set out to start the explorations! We drove north along the coast until we reached the sand dunes. They end where the ocean begins. I think we read somewhere that the ... read more

Our friend Tara came to visit us in Spain (from Germany) with her son & hubby. They showed up on Thanskgiving morning, we ate a quick meal and headed out. We drove east until night fell, then found a camp ground and crashed for the night. The next morning we strolled around Ronda (pronounced with a long Oh sound), checked out the deep ravine, the more than 200 year old Puente Nuevo that spans across it, and just did some random wanderings around town. Then we decided to drive along the Costa del Sol (Sun Coast) in hopes of finding a small quaint town, fishing village, semi-remote camp spot. Instead all we found were miles and miles of high rise resorts, condos & houses. You see, this is a vacationers' spot so there's lots of expats ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville November 18th 2006

Our house is Spain isn't too far from the large city of Sevilla. Really close to the city, 9km to be exact, is the ancient Roman city of Italica. We were both very aware of the fact that the Romans had spread out from Italy and established cities in various foreign lands, but it never occurred to us that there was one in such close proximity. One that we could drive to in under an hour. We were fascinated the moment we heard about it! So one sunny afternoon we headed there with a few of our good friends, Theresa, Shan & Jon (a couple of the pics he took:). According to some online searching, Italica is one of the earliest Roman settlements in Spain, founded in 206 BC and was the birthplace of three emperors. ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam November 12th 2006

One of Jeff's favorite bands (AILD) was playing in Amsterdam and we managed to find a cheap flight and we were off for a fun weekend! Short synapses of our short trip: --wandered EVERYWHERE it seemed, trying to take it all in (this was my 4th time visiting but there's still something new to discover every time!) --self-toured the Heineken brewery --saw an improv comedy show at Boom Chicago --floated along the canals on a small boat tour --visited numerous coffee shops --ate at numerous scrumptious little cafes And the whole point of our trip! We saw As I Lay Dying, Protest the Hero, and Bullet For My Valentine at the Melkweg. Little did we know when we first booked our room for the weekend, but it was a hop, skip & a jump away from ... read more

Africa » Morocco October 22nd 2006

...another trip. We took a long weekend trip to Morocco with our friend Sandra. You can actually see the Rif Mountains in the northern region of Morocco from across the Mediterranean while standing in Spain. They are quite impressive. We decided to go on this adventure with a small tour group based out of Sevilla. It was mainly a bunch of lame, whiny American college students that were doing a month or so abroad. The three of us had a blast despite them:) Our bus took us to Algeciras where we boarded a ferry to Cueta which is an enclave of Spain, located in Africa. After going through customs at the border, we boarded the bus and began the drive through the countryside. The first town we visited was Chefchaouen. It is located in the mountains. ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris October 8th 2006

The title says it all. Like the majority of our trips in Europe, we were only in Paris for a few days. Sometimes as soon as we say hello to a place we have to turn around and say goodbye. We usually take our trips on long weekends, work permitting. But even a few days in these wondrous places can seem like weeks. We always make sure to wake early, go to bed late, soak in as much of the culture & sights as possible. Our trip to Paris this month was no exception. I (Amy) had been there a couple of times before so I had an idea of the city layout, how the Metro worked, etc. We flew into the city late at night, exiting the train onto the cold, rainy sidewalks. We definitely ... read more

Europe June 4th 2006

We went to Germany (again)! This time for about 8 days. The main reason we went back was to go to one of the biggest concerts in the world. Or at least that's what we assume:) It's called Rock-am-Ring. I (amy) had been to it twice before and knew how great it was. It's 3 days of concerts, 3 stages, camping and mingling with people from all over Europe. Noone gets in a fight, noone steals anything, you hang out even if you only speak a few phrases in eachother's language. It's great. We haven't been to anything similar to it in the states and doubt we ever will. The concert is held at Nürburgring--a racetrack in the western area of Germany. We drove to the show with our friends Tara & Nick and met up ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Almería May 26th 2006

The first time we stumbled upon Cabo de Gata Natural Park online, all we saw were limited pictures; we hadn't heard anything about the place or knew anyone who had heard of it, let alone gone there. We're here to tell you, if you live in Spain or plan on visiting and haven't gone to this park...GO!!!! This place is great! The park is located in Andalucia in the province of Almeria, about a 4 hour drive from where we were. Here's some info pulled from www.andalucia.com : "Covering 45,663ha in the southeastern corner of Spain, Cabo de Gata-Níjar is Andalucia's largest coastal protected area, a wild and isolated landscape with some of Europe's most original geological features. The eponymous mountain range is Spain's largest volcanic rock formation with sharp peaks and crags in ochre-hues. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Grazalema April 29th 2006

This was another day trip we went on in April 2006. It was an easy hike through some very beautiful country. The clouds were hanging over the mountains and we were actually above them for a while, though I don't think we were at a really high altitude. The sun was shining, the plants were vividly green and there were goats everywhere. ... read more

Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Kaiserslautern April 15th 2006

It had only been about a half a year since I (amy) was away from Germany and I was itching to go back! It was soooo beautiful there, the people were kind and I had so many fond memories of the place that I wanted Jeff to witness the grandeur of the country as well. So, in early April I needed to do some more training for my work in Spain and they told me to pick a base in Europe to go to. Duh! Of course I went with Germany. I knew the place. I had friends that were still there. What better place to go back to for a week. My flight was free and we just had to get Jeff a ticket which is always super cheap with the likes of airlines such ... read more
