We joined 400-some people for a hike. Among them were military, fellow veterans, firefighters, swat team, Raytheon employees, family members and friends, young & old. All were united on a sunny, early Saturday morning to hike to Bridal Wreath Falls in the Rincon Mountains in support of the Wounded Warrior Project. Before we all started the hike, a bagpipe player & the Color Guard did the opening ceremony with the National Anthem. We've done this hike before (&when water was actually spilling over the falls), but had never seen this many people on the trail and it was quite inspiring! The trail of people continued on for what seemed an eternity along the 5.2mile trek to and from the falls. Despite the heat and blazing sun, everyone seemed in good spirits yet eager to finish the ... read more

A short drive north of us is Catalina State Park. After all of the winter rains, we were sure to have a hike lined with flowers, but we weren't sure to the extent. We were pleasantly surprised as we were surrounded by stunning fields of orange, purple, yellow & white flowers. Geez, I really wish I knew the names of them! Seeing the desert come to life like this in the spring makes the hottest part of the summer bearable. The desert really is a magical place and we're so lucky to see it through the phases. So many people visit and think it's just brown or full of cacti. But it really is more than that! The astonishing beauty of Tucson and the surrounding areas surprises us every day:) ... read more

Roughly a 4 hour drive east of our house is the Gila National Forest, Gila Wilderness and within, the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Once we were off the main highway and onto the Scenic Byway that leads to & through the park, we were engulfed by trees galore! The byway itself was pretty exciting. There were portions of it that seemed barely wide enough for two passing cars. Luckily for us, we seemed to be the only ones driving the road that day. There was still snow on the ground in places, but the sun was shining & the sky was clear & the brightest of blues. We were unable to park at the regular parking area closest to the dwellings due to the bridge being closed. The west fork of the Gila River had ... read more

The Santa Rita Mountains stare me in the face every day. When I look out my back door I can see them peeking between the rooftops of my neighbors' houses. When I drive home, I see them standing tall against the blue sky, with a blanket of desert shrubs and cacti reaching as far as the eye can see. The peaks are jagged but seem inviting. I feel a sense of calm whenever I catch a glimpse of their raw beauty. For some reason though, we had lived here for nearly 3 years and had yet to venture to the rocks that call my name. Then winter came. Then snow fell. And then more fell. The Santa Ritas were painted with a sheet of white. I decided this was my time to finally venture to them ... read more

*pronounced something like "suh-wah-ro" There has been TONS of precipitation in Tucson and the surrounding areas this winter. I mean A LOT! Granted, we've only been here for 3 winters so far, but we've never seen this much rain and snow this time of year. When a friend came to visit, it gave me the perfect excuse (like I needed one!) to go to Saguaro National Park--east side here in Tucson, again. The pictures say the rest...... read more

(3rd & 4th stops on the cruise) The ship next brought us to Key West, Florida for Fantasy Fest (www.fantasyfest.net). Fantasy Fest is a huge celebration during Halloween that entails parades, huge parties on the streets, costumes and LOTS of body paint and nudity. It's like a giant adult playground! We even got to meet Ron Jeremy. If you don't know who he is, you probably don't want to look him up, especially if you are faint of heart. After spending one day and two nights of partying on the streets of Key West, we spent one glorious day at sea giving both our feet and kidneys a break. We woke the next morning to disembark in Cozumel, Mexico which is a small island near Cancun. We all ended up splitting up that day and Spyce ... read more

(2nd stop on the cruise) We tendered from the cruise ship to the private island owned by Carnival Cruiselines; Half Moon Cay. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say we could have stayed on this island for a couple of days. There was nothing there but beach, a bar, beach, some hammocks for rent, and did I mention beach?! We walked along the long strip of pristine white sand, climbed over rugged rock and laid our towels down on our own private cove. It was such a relaxing, peaceful day! ... read more

(1st stop on cruise) I went on a cruise without Jeff (sorry hun). I wanted to start the tradition of having a girl's only trip, even if it's not every year and even if it's not a big trip. Of course, I had to go all out for the first vacation with the girls and when I found this cruise, we booked it a year and a half in advance! The logistics behind the trip was quite troublesome at times, with cancellations and finding subs & with us all flying from the far corners of the states--Tiff & I from AZ, Spyce from SC, Jenn from VA and Tara from VT. But we all made it!! The first stop on the cruise was on the island of Nassau in the Bahamas. I had high expectations yet ... read more

(days 3 & 4) Mom has always dreamt of going to Telluride and finally, she got to go there! We spent 2 amazing days wandering around the town, soaking up the sun (we even got burnt! wasn't expecting that!), relaxing in the ginormous hot tub at our hotel. Seriously, this thing could've fit about 15 people easily, but we had it to ourselves:) Telluride is a tiny town nestled in the valley in the San Juan Mountains. We easily traversed the streets on foot seeing as though the town is only maybe 1 mile long. The town is filled with history from the mining boom and many of the buildings are old and newer ones are built to still hold that old charm. Telluride is definitely out of our price range as far as living there, ... read more

(day 2) Last night we stayed in Chinle, AZ. As far as we could tell, there's nothing fantastic about the town, but lurking shortly outside of the town limits is a spectacular place neither mom nor I had anticipated. I'm talking about Canyon de Chelly National Monument! This gem of a beauty happens to be FREE to visit at all times of the year. FREE!! However, to enter into the canyon, you have to pay for a guide who is a local Navajo. Since visiting the canyon wasn't even originally a part of our trip, we couldn't go to the bottom of the canyon due to lack of permits. But, viewing the canyon atop the perches on the rim was just as wonderful! Unlike other National Parks, Canyon de Chelly doesn't have an actual entrance like ... read more
