We went to Germany (again)! This time for about 8 days. The main reason we went back was to go to one of the biggest concerts in the world. Or at least that's what we assume😊 It's called Rock-am-Ring. I (amy) had been to it twice before and knew how great it was. It's 3 days of concerts, 3 stages, camping and mingling with people from all over Europe. Noone gets in a fight, noone steals anything, you hang out even if you only speak a few phrases in eachother's language. It's great. We haven't been to anything similar to it in the states and doubt we ever will. The concert is held at Nürburgring--a racetrack in the western area of Germany. We drove to the show with our friends Tara & Nick and met up with a bunch of our friends from other parts of Germany and Italy. The first night at R-n-R usually consists of setting up camp, wandering around and trying to stay warm. Though this was the beginning of June, the weather (especially at night) is still chilly and it's common to rain. After the past couple times at R-n-R we knew we were bound to get
Switzerland
the waterfalls along the highway rained on so we came prepared. We even set up camp under the trees. Practice makes perfect. The next 3 days were spent rockin' out with some of our favorite bands and hundreds of thousands of adoring strangers. There are always bands that play at the same time so we were unfortunately forced to choose between them at times. Here's a quick list of some of the bands we DID see (in no particular order of preference or viewing):
~Guns N' Roses
~Metallica
~Tool
~Korn
~Alice in Chains (with the new singer)
~Bloodhound Gang
~The Dresden Dolls
~Avenged Sevenfold
~Atreyu
~Bullet for my Valentine
~Alexisonfire
There were many more, but I can't think of them.
After Rock-am-Ring, we decided to rent a car and do some more exploring. We grabbed a road atlas and off we went. No itinerary in sight. We ventured south into Switzerland for a while just taking in the beautiful scenery and mini-waterfalls cascading over the mountains along side the highway. Then we drove over to Liechtenstein. Since the country is very small, we just wandered around in the capitol Vaduz for a couple of hours before heading back on the road. We crossed
Germany
the drive to Neuschwanstein Castle over into Austria and drove on some smaller roads, trying to find a place that called our names. After climbing up and down the hills, we stumbled upon this small town on the edge of an alpine lake. We didn't write down the name (dumb we know) and I've searched all over the maps online. What I came up with was that we were on the Plansee in the Tyrol region of Austria. Either that or we were in close proximity. We found a quaint little guesthouse to stay at and as soon as we checked in, we practically ran to the lake to walk along the shore and gaze at the sights. Once the sun went down we wandered the town before returning back "home" and taking a dip in the indoor heated pool. The next morning after our breakfast we headed towards Germany to see the Neuschwanstein Castle. If you've ever wondered where Walt Disney got the idea for his castle, this is probably your answer. We wanted to take a scenic route to the castle and boy did we! We must've driven a complete circle around it before we found ourselves on the map again. The scenery
made it completely bearable though. The mountains near the castle were still capped in white, big poofy clouds hovered overhead and hang gliders glided through the air.
