We didn't have far to go to get to this wondrous place. Amy's mom Sharon came along for the trip. Yay! It was an easy 1 and a half hour drive from our house, if even that. Just one turn off the highway, down a two lane windy road and we were there! On the way there we didn't pass any cars. It was almost as though we were the only ones on the road that day! We neared the park entrance and though it was beautiful, it didn't seem anything like what we were anticipating; nothing like in the pictures online (we were pleasantly surprised later). The lady at the entrance was super cheery and answered all of our questions. Such a nice woman. She seemed to really love her job. So we started our ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Moab September 25th 2007

I (amy) took a quick but desperately needed trip to Moab with my dear goddess of a friend and her son. I was there with her for moral support and in turn she showed me her beloved stomping grounds. After a short stay with some friends in Flagstaff we drove north to Moab. While there we did some short hikes and she took me to her favorite "secret" place, Mill Creek, where we wandered for what seemed like eternity, sporatically dipping our toes in the cool stream. I wouldn't have asked to go to such a magical place with anyone else!... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Tucson July 15th 2007

We drove up to Mt Lemmon to escape the triple digits of Tucson weather. Granted, it's not that much cooler of a climate. But seeing as though it is more than 6000 feet above the city it definitely drops a few degrees. Instead of feeling as though you've stuck your head in an oven, you get a nice, gentle, cool breeze. The Catalina Highway (really a 2 lane road) slowly winds up the mountain for a little less than 30 miles, climbing over 6000 miles and traversing such biodiversity that it's been likened to driving from the Sonoran desert to Canadian plush forests in a super short distance. It really is a breathtaking place and by the time you've reached far above, the city is only reminiscent of speckles of rocks. We went there a couple ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Fort Huachuca June 30th 2007

We went, along with my mom, on a trip to the army base in Ft Huachuca. Located on the base are stables, named Buffalo Corral Riding Stables. I think they are open to the public, so no special identification is needed to access the stables. This was mom's first time on a horse! It was only my second time on a horse, unless you count sitting on a Clydesdale at an Amish farm waaaaay back in the day when I was probably 8. But I don't really count that since I didn't actually ride the horse. I think horses are beautiful, majestic, strong creatures but I'm a wee bit intimidated by them as well. They have a crazed, wild look in their eyes that reminds me exactly how I am at their mercy as we trot ... read more

Our first trip to Arkansas. And boy were we pleasantly surprised at how great this place is! We went with my mom to visit her brother & my cousin. Or my uncle and her nephew if you'd like to think of it that way too! We spent a few days wandering through the winding streets of the quaint town of Eureka Springs, caught a few local acts, toured a haunted hotel and just spent quality time with family. ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas June 12th 2007

Both of us have been to Las Vegas on numerous occasions but never with eachother. This was our first trip there together and I'm sure there will be more to come. We are both night owls and Vegas is the kind of town that just sucks us right in, enticing us with never closing bars, twinkling lights and a plethora of activities. Someday I'll actually get to the Red Rocks to explore more of nature as opposed to the man-made playground. Someday... We met up with our boy Randy from Cali, some of his friends and my friend Cynthia whom I hadn't seen since Germany. Added to the roster was Kerry that I went to high school with and is now a Vegas transplant. We even ran into Curtis, whom I used to work with in ... read more

North America » United States » California » San Diego April 28th 2007

Our original plan was to go with my mom to Disneyland but those plans fell through. Determined to still do something fun, and out of town, we decided on a trip to San Diego to breathe in the fresh sea salt filled air, and go the the ginormous zoo. We stayed in a hostel in the gaslight district. Mom had never stayed in one and her first experience was definitely one to write about! The first night the three of us had a private room, but the second night jeff had to be in an all male room and mom & I were in a co-ed room with about 5 other people. As is the norm at hostels, people were friendly, noone messed with our stuff, but the perils of sleeping in the same room as ... read more

We went, along with my (amy's) mom on a hike in Sabino Canyon (mom's 1st hike ever!). Sabino Canyon is in the north part of Tucson along the base of the Catalina Mountains. The year prior (or maybe 2--not sure) there were bad floods and a large part of the trails, signs, etc had been washed away. There was lots of water flowing when we went on our hike and we had to traverse the stream back and forth numerous times. Our goal was to make it to Seven Falls, where when weather permits, there are water falls (hence the name). The hike was about 7.8miles, but a fairly easy one. Once we reached the falls we stopped for lunch and hiked back down. On the way back we were playing a game where you name ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon January 1st 2007

After a day to drive back home, repack, get a little sleep and recoupe from our boarding trip to Granada we were on the road again. This time, in the opposite direction to Lisbon, Portugal. It was about a 4 1/2hour drive. We arrived in the early evening, checked in to our hotel and then wandered toward Bairro Alto to check out the nightlife. The hills were SUPER steep to get up there, and we knew about the trams that could take us to the top, but didn't see any running. We passed by one, as our legs were ablaze, but it looked as though it was retired for the night. Or perhaps it hadn't started service yet. After all, we were out "early". Early being before 1-2am. Most of the clubs & bars are dead ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada December 28th 2006

After Christmas, we headed out with a few of our friends to go snowboarding. The Sierra Nevadas are peaked high above the city of Granada, about 2 and 1/2 hours away from where we lived. Down in the city the air was chilly but there was no snow. Once we climbed up the mountain road we got stuck in a long line of traffic:( When we were finally able to park, we then stood in the queue for our lift tickets. I had been here before and it wasn't nearly this crowded! Before we reached the ticket window, we heard an announcement that they were not selling anymore tickets that day due to the fact that there wasn't much snow and they were limiting the amount of people on the runs. Determined to still have fun ... read more
