Those hairpin curves
We've had our share of those in Nepal, Bhutan and a few Caribbean islands. I always find myself holding my breath and hoping we don't tumble down the side. All those curries sound wonderful. Glad you are in hands of the angels. Your home stay sounds perfect...if we get to the area we will give it a try.

Nice read..
The cleanliness of the places you go in India depends on how famous each of them are in the tourist map. No tourist destination in India is as clean as Bern, or nearly as clean(i wish one day they would be) Keep off the beaten track if you want cleaner places. Else you will have to enjoy the places with a bit of garbage. :-( If you love beaches, try these beaches Varkala Beach - Kerala (Now that you are in Kannur, you will have to travel back and this could be a days travel, so best avoid this ) Malpe Beach, Uduppi, Karnataka(This is nearer to Kannur - May be 3 to 4 hours max).Benaulim Beach, Goa(This is a beautiful beach up north in the state of Goa. There are lots of beaches in Goa) If you like hills( may not be novelty for you since you are from switzerland ), try Munnar and Wayanad both in Kerala. The views of Munnar are not to be missed if you are in Kerala. Wayanad will be nearer to you. Finally, select hotels in the mid range (cheapest anything in india also mean the quality will be pathetic. You cannot be assured of a minimum satisfactory value in anything that comes cheapest, unlike in Europe where you can be assured of cleanliness most of the time) Also do a background check/check reviews of hotels to not have your day spoiled by touts if you are paying well(You should get nice accommodation if you are ready to spend around 1500 per head per day(You 'might' get cheaper and good quality accommodation but that purely depends on your luck !!)). India - all of it - is an adventure!
Hello Nina and Mark. Hello World - and you are clearly determined to see it before you leave it! I’m so glad I’ve discovered your blogs. They bring back great memories of my many travels in the fascinating land that is India. I thoroughly enjoyed Kerala and I know you will continue to do so too. I look forward to reading more of your travels.

Memories
Hi Mike, we are happy that we can bring back your memories :-). Still we have some blogs to write about some more destinations. But as internet access is not always the best, this can take a while. Happy travels!

Thank you
Wow, thanks for all you wonderful comments! Nice to see that so many are taking part at our trip. Well, the following few days India showed us a more relaxed side. As we have very bad internet connection, the next blogs still have to wait a bit. Greetings from India, Nina & Mark

Nina in the Old Palace in Mattancherry

What good travelers!
I so admire your attitude, taking the outrageously bad with the wonderfully good. It sounds as if India is full of both, and with Nina in this beautiful dress, no wonder everyone wanted their photos with you! Best wishes for a smoother ride and more adventures!

mountains around Kandersteg

Great scenery...good times
Nothing like visitors to encourage one to show off the scenery and bring good times

Exciting times!
What great adventures--you two definitely know amazing hikes! I loved your photos, especially the first one and the one of you two in Asian style. Congratulations on your new flat and on getting rid of bedbugs--I'll remember your tips. I look forward to your next adventure far from home...

Only an hour away!
It's so amazing that an hour on a great Swiss train whisked you to a gorgeous city so different from your own! I loved the photos of Basel and the Design Center--how great that you have to return since the museum was closed. Then you can also do some shopping for things that are more expensive in Berne.

Very interesting blog.
This is very informative coming from an outsider who obviously has a very knowledgeable and intimate relationship with this part of the world. I was aware of certain Swiss attitudes to Germans. I just wanted to ask whether you have yet mastered the local lingo?
9th October 2013

the swiss language
Thank you for your message. As I am originally from the southern part of Germany and Markus is Swiss, it was quite easy to understand the swiss language. It took me about 2 month to follow a conversation and to answer if someone asked me something in swiss german. Still there are words that I do not know (the dialect is different in every region) but from the context I normally get it. Speaking swiss german is something different. A lot of swiss told me that it sounds horrible when germans try to speak swiss. And as even little children grow up with "normal" german, I continue to just speak german. On TV the majority of channels is in german, in school swiss kids are supposed to speak german - so most of the germans just speak german. I also think that it would not help to solve the problem if germans start speaking swiss german. The swiss would just laugh about us and our accent (I have heard this before).

Another perfect day in paradise, eh?
This is what we always say to each other in my perfect hometown. I think we should all live in paradise, so don't feel at all guilty--good for you for figuring out how to live in such a beautiful place (great photos!). And from here, those nasty notes from the narrow-minded old people sound pretty funny though I guess I really wouldn't want one myself. Happy hiking!
9th October 2013

Thank you Tara
...also to you "Happy and safe hiking" ;-)! P.S.: I collect the notes - may be one day I will write a "best of". :-)

Wow,wow, wow, how beautiful
Our fall visit to Bern and to meet you has been post-poned due to several issues. We'll keep in touch and hopefully we can meet you soon. Your country is beautiful. An interesting blog and a bit surprising. Do many Americans live in Switzerland? I wonder how they are treating. Keep these wonder blogs coming...they are gems.

Americans living in Switzerland
There do live some Americans here in Switzerland, most of them in the region of Geneva (which is really international), Zug (there are a lot of foreign companies due to low taxes) and Zurich. I do not know how many, but should be a low percentage.

We are waiting for you ;-)
Thank you - well, it is hard taking bad pics in our mountains ;-). We were thinking of you while riding the train up the mountain (as this was one of our suggestions for you). We are happy to stay in touch with you - the mountains won't move and will be ready when you come, as we will be. Hope, you are fine and healthy! This is the most important thing. Thanks for your message and greetings from Berne!
