Great adventures off the beaten path!
How lovely that you are exploring these places of spiritual energy, even though here and in your last blog, it's been clear that being in a meditative state in these spaces is nearly impossible in modern, crowded, not-so-spiritual India. Glad you're feeling better, Nina, and best wishes for the rest of your journey. Namaste.

Very Nice
Good blog. I had been there myself. I think that that statue was carved out of a single granite rock some time in 900 AD, but I think the project started in 600 or so AD. Also, there is the hill where Chandragupta Maurya fasted to death in around 300 BC. I think he was the emperor of much of India and he had defeated one of Alexanders generals and had married the general's daughter to seal the peace and to increase trade with Greece. So that place has a lot of really interesting history.

Karma
Great blog of life on a dusty road. Amazing what you find. Without the shitholes the most memorable situations may be diluted or washed down the memory drain.

Thanks Dave. Oh yes, the shitholes are the ones that stick to your memory and are always part of a good laugh - some time later ;-)......

Good one
A really good blog. And some very true statements, but if you were an Indian, you might see some things differently. Well written! Enjoyed reading it.

Thank you. Well, I hope, there are different opinions about our thoughts! Interestingly, some Indians were discussing this topic with us. And they had a much stronger view of it as we do. Some of them do not go to temples any more (they have their own little ones). One indian friend even told us: "Listening to the heart - this is something, indians cannot do. Society pressure is to high." Anyway, it is not about judging. Who knows which is the "right" way...?

A memorable Christmas!
What a perfect place for Christmas and for healing! The Rainforest Retreat sounds magical with your own cabin, places to hike, bio food and great people. So glad you didn't have to stay in that hospital, and glad you're feeling better! Happy travels!

ups and downs
Oh yes, we are having a great time. Even though we have some very deep downs we also have some great ups - but this is travelling in India ;-). It is extreme most of the times....

Get healthy stay healthy
Glad you've returned to a place agh was so positive for you. Sorry the beaches are __not worthy of going in. Each culture is so different and this one may be want we want to visit but not adopt. Their marriage views are what they are. Keep the great stories coming.

Hare Krishna!
What a fabulous re-introduction to India! How great that you were able to show the people in the temple that Westerners also know of and practice Hare Krishna. In my Santa Barbara, I sometimes went to a Sunday evening Hare Krishna ceremony with lovely chanting, followed by one of their delicious feasts. I really appreciated that you translated the Hindu words--mirthis, tilak.. for us. Best wishes on your journey!

Switzerland
It is unhealthy to spend too much time working! Feed the soul and travel. We may need to add these hikes to our list of things when we get there. We are hoping we are coming in 2015. Details are not worked out yet. Loved the lord of the mountain photo.
10th November 2014

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Switzerland and have a long list of nice hikes!

Eiger, Jungfrau, Matterhorn!
These mountains are such legends--how fantastic that you got to visit quaint villages and then see these peaks from your great hikes. How bizarre that the top of the Schilthorn had so many tourists (the gondolas, clearly), but none of the trails--well, better for you! You may not have had many holidays, but these were fantastic. Have fun in India!

Oh yes, we love these mountains and are so happy that they are only a stone throw away from home. Thanks a lot, we hope India will be as great as on our first visit.

Thanks for the memories...
When we lived in Stuttgart, Germany, we spent many long weekends in the Bernese Oberland; staying in Steckelberg at the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and hiking the various trails you have written about. I've also enjoyed skiing Kleine Scheidegg, down to both Grindelwald and Wengen. I have dreamed about hiking from Grindelwald to Montreux from one valley to the next just as you described the hike from Leukerbad to Kandersteig. I was thinking of taking the gondola up and hike down each mountain ridge...the lazy way...but what I wanted was to enjoy the scenery! Have a great time in India...I hope you are not going as backpackers!

Stuttgart
thanks for your message. We are happy that we could bring up some nice memories! Great that you lived in Stuttgart. That is my (Nina) hometown! No, we will not travel through India as real backpackers (although we will carry our backpack and use local transport). I will do an ayurveda treatment and later we travel slowly up to Mumbai, staying in some private guesthouses sometimes off the beaten track. We also plan to visit some friends living there. Hope you will enjoy our stories.

What a fantastic life!
From Aachen, one of my favorite cities, to so many fabulous places everywhere--what an adventurer you are! I agree that the internet makes things easier, but I also love the free feeling from the times when I'm in a small town and have no connection. This blog brings back so many wonderful memories of places in Chile that I've loved--the Valles del Maipo and de Elqui, Neruda's houses, and the amazing Atacama. Thanks for sharing!

Internet makes travelling easier
Thanks - I try to write some more "old" blogs. It is true, internet makes travelling easier, but if it is better, I am not sure. At those times, the feeling of really being away and remote was a great experience. It felt more adventurous. But there are always advantages and disadvantages... ;-)
