Today is our afternoon tour of the Vatican so heading out from the hotel we caught the bus down town and got off the bus at the Piazza Venezia opposite the Victor Emmanuelle II monument, the roundabout here is crazy and full of mad Italian drivers in buses taxis. Leaving the busy site we wandered the back streets heading for the famous Piazza Navona where many artists practice their stock and trade. This piazza has 2 amazing fountains and several beautiful churches. Surrounded by cafes we had our morning coffees stop before heading off towards the Vatican. Again strolling the winding back streets of Rome we found our way eventually to the Tiber where we lunch was bought from a small cafes and eaten on the steps by the river. Finishing lunch we walked across the ... read more

Big day planned today and leaving the hotel we walked the 10 minuets the Basilica di Santa Maria a 12 century church close to the train station, the stunning interior typical of the time. Leaving ther Basilica we jumped on the Metro and headed off to find a section of the original Roman walls located just across the Tiber from Trastevere. On arrival we also found the pyramid of Caius Cestius dating back to the end of the Republican era cira 200AD. On foot we strolled down the Via Marmorata crossing the Tiber into Trastevere proper. Heading off to the Ponte Sisto a 2000 year bridge over the Tiber still in use today. Following the old Jewish path we entered the ancient Jewish Quarter admiring the old ruins gradually working our way back towards the Circus ... read more

We have arrived in Rome. Our hotel is a short walk from Rome Termini and Piazza della Repubblica. We booked into our room, dropped our bags off and headed towards the Trevi Fountain. The crowds were nowhere near as big as last time we visited. We threw the coin into the fountain, took photos and then headed off to the Spanish Step. Looks like the Trevi Fountain crowd had moved there. The place was packed. Next visit was too Piazza Venezia where there are a few places to see in close proximity. Vittorio Emmanuel II Monument, a most amazing building, next to Vittorio Emmanuel II Monument is Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli... wow this is spectacular, the interior is exquisite, highly recommend visiting this beautiful Basilica and Piazza del Campidoglio. Dinner was at the restaurant ... read more

Having seen the best of Florence we decided to head for a day trip to Pisa and Lucca. Catching the local train was a fun and cheap way to travel with the station only a short walk from our hotel. A short train trip of about an hour we arrived at Pisa and to be honest the Tower is really the only thing to see there. Generally a rather drab place the tower and baptistery are a lovely interlude if you can get past the bloody souvenir stalls and hawkers trying to sell you all sorts of stuff, still they gotta make a living too. Spending a couple of hours in Pisa it was soon time to leave and head off to the walled city of Lucca. Again catching the local train it was only a ... read more

Europe » Italy » Emilia-Romagna » Maranello May 28th 2012

Catching a cab from the hotel out to the airport, it was off to Maranello, the home of Ferrari, but first we had to find our way out of Florence. With Zac at the wheel of our rental car, and turning on the trusty Tomtom and digging out the map as a backup we headed out through the crazy traffic of Florence and after several “oops we were supposed to go down there” it was off into the country side. Taking a back road to Maranello was a nice change from the hustle and bustle from the city and we were soon threading our way through country roads northwards towards our destination. An hour and a half or so later we entered the heart of Ferrari looking for the museum and the array of firms renting ... read more

Today we woke to a lovely day and decided for lunch we would buy some local fare and have a picnic. We walked over the Ponte Vecchio and did the hell walk up to Piazza Michelangelo, where the a replica statue of David is. We were disappointed to find, not rolling green parks and gardens, but a dirty great carpark, with tourist stalls everywhere and nowhere decent to sit and relax. So we walked all the way back down. Stopped near the river front for our picnic, then went back to the hotel. Tomorrow is Zacs day. Early in the morning we pick up a rental car from Florence Airport and drive to Maranello, the home of Ferrari, the Ferrari museum, the Ferrari test track, the Ferrari factory. The place where Zac will tick off number one ... read more

Today was a good day, walked through the leather markets where I bought a handbag, Zac rubbed the nose of Il Porcellino, a bronze statue of a boar near the markets, supposed to guarantee your return to Firenze as well as bring good luck. We visited the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, Basilica of Santa Croce and walked over Ponte Vecchio. I bought Mum 'The Pietà' to take home. There was a gelato festival so we sampled a few different flavours... it would be rude not too...... We finished our day with a meal at IL Portale Pizzera restaurant which is next to our hotel. A nice place albeit a bit overpriced.... read more

I started the day at 05:30am with a walk to St Marks Square to capture the sunrise. There were a handful of people out and about, some photographers and some tourist leaving and arriving. The lack of people at this hour of the morning was simply fantastic. No queues, not hustle & bustle and best of all, almost silence. I returned to the hotel to have breakfast with Mark & Zac, and then we we went through the food and fish markets, which were excellent, the tour of San Marco Basilica just flew by, I took plenty of photos of the golden mosaic ceilings, and the high altar where supposedly the bones of Saint Mark rest after being stolen from the Ottomans many centuries ago. The Doges palace was great, regal without being garish and ostentatious ... read more

Today started with a water taxi ride to Murano, a Venetian island where glass blowing is the primary industry. We watched a couple of blokes making some chandelier parts, the way they were able to handle the molten glass was amazing, they are artists, that's for sure. The water taxi ride was a hoot, they are roughly 30 feet long with a big engine, and seriously haul ass, there was lots of shouting and pointing when navigating the canals, but there is a lot of shouting and pointing in everyday Italian life, so it seems. A lot of the water taxis are very beautiful, lots of teak and mahogany, with stainless steel fittings, very nice to watch going past. We wandered around Murano until about 2, had lunch in the local town square, then got a ... read more

We had about 3 hours sleep last night, so Mark and Zac were pretty grumpy and not much fun this morning. Add to that Orly airport is crap, and we couldn't get a decent coffee or breakfast, and that made for not a fun wait for the plane. The flight to Venice was uneventful and once the plane touched down at Marco Polo airport, we were very happy to be near Venice. Our bus dropped us off at Piazzale Romal, then we caught the Vapretto (water bus) to Rialto Bridge. The Vapretto was mad, a 50 foot long barge basically, stuffed full of people and luggage, tossed about on the Grand Canal, passing other smaller boats with often inches to spare. We then got lost on our way to the hotel, easy to do in Venice, ... read more
