A nice early start today we departed for Bath planning to camp at a site some 5 miles away. We headed into Bath and on the advice from some other campers we met looked for a Park and Ride as taking the camper into Bath may have been tricky. Well no park and Ride was to be found on our route (we found out later that the way we came in was the only road NOT to have a park and Ride) and we ended up in downtown Bath and into a complete nightmare, no parking, not even somewhere to move to the side of the road to gather your thoughts and plan a move, take this advice, DO NOT DRIVE INTO BATH EVEN WITH A CAR, it is just not worth the stress that goes ... read more

Leaving the camp ground late today, we all slept in big time, we finally got away around 10.00 and Pam was supposed to set the Tomtom to take us to Amesbury some 20 miles away which is right next to Stonehenge, our destination for the day. Well it turns out that due to a minor blonde moment, she set the Tomtom to Westbury, which is in the wrong direction! Not a great start to the day. By the time we had figured out much time had elapsed and a number or sharp words exchanged. Setting the Tomtom to the new destination it proceeded to take us down these tiny narrow country lanes. Well wanted to get off the beaten track and did we, to be honest driving through the small villages dotted along the route was ... read more

We set off on the motorway to make up a little time with 180 kms to do to reach that nights destination, a little town close to both Bath and Stonehenge. Stopped on the way so Bree could visit Legoland only to find it closed for renovations and with much wailing and gnashing of teeth we headed off to Donnington castle a great ruin that you can actually get right up to and touch, built before 1386 it was added to at that time to fortify the kings position in the area and to protect the main east/west and north/south roads, it was mostly destroyed during a siege in 1644 and only the main entry, moat and portcullis tower remaining, still very cool to see. Setting off again we came around a bend and saw the ... read more

Well, we caught our first London train by ourselves this morning to get out to Harpenden to collect the motor home, arriving at 11.30 we suddenly realised that we were 3 hours early for the pickup so we wandered the streets of that quaint little town and drank great coffee at the Slug and Lettuce cafe, I kid you not. Picking up the van at 2.30 and leaving at 4 to do some grocery shopping it was getting a little late so we decided to stop at the closest camp ground to where we were. Well I checked the book and found one in Hertford which I thought was just down the road, well setting the address into the Tomtom we set off down this little goat track only just wide enough to fit the van ... read more

Our last day in London, (3 days is just not enough but there you have it), was spent firstly with a great walk through Hyde park where Pam got some good pics of a Crested Grebe, a little duck like bird with a hair do like Sid Vicious. On down to Harrods, what is a visit to London without seeing Harrods, bloody expensive and a little hoity toity for me but was still neat to see, the buildings architecture is fantastic, (see the pics). Back on to the hop on hop off bus, our mode of transport for the whole of our time in London, 22 pounds each for the three days, not a bad price, and past Kensington Palace and around to the British Museum for a quick gander inside at the amazing lattice roof ... read more

It was off to Madame Tussauds this morning to see the stars young and old in wax, with quite a history of its own, Madame Tussauds originated in the late 1800's in France before moving to London where it has been ever since. From there it was off to Oxford street to buy a new phone card, what an experience, I have never seen so many people in one street at one time ever, really intimidating they just don't stop. London seems to have a life of its own and a palpable vibe or energy. Leaving Oxford St we headed off to the "Tower" my pick of the London sights The Tower of London has a history dating back to around 1200 AD with much of the tower still as it was albeit restored over time. ... read more

The flight from Los Angeles to Munich was another good flight, except the plane was small and cramped and sleeping was not as easy or as comfortable, but we all managed a few hours. This leg of the trip also had it's little challenge. As we were on our way to the departure lounge to board our connecting flight to London, we were getting all passports ready when Bree told us she had left her shoulder bag on the plane, with her passport inside it! As you can image a slight panic overcame us. Mark and Bree hurried back to the pane, but there was no access back on board. Luckily one of the crew was leaving and in her hand was Bree's bag...... a huge lesson learnt by the youngest member of the travel party! ... read more

As we were about to board our plane at Auckland a message came over the PA system for Pamela Russell to go to the desk. Much to our amazement we were classed as a 'Level 4 Security Risk' and ushered out of the departure lounge, through a rabbit warren of corridors into the bowels of airport security to the Reconciliation Room. The x-ray has picked up an object in our check in baggage that caused concern and we needed to open the bag. We were questioned in what had been packed in the bag and we couldn't think of anything that would warrant a level 4 security risk. We were shown the x-ray and it turned out to be the printer I was taken so I could do my work! This was packed in Mark's bag, ... read more
