Leaving a very cold Füssen for Münich some 200 odd km away we intended to go to Dachau on the way in. We arrived at Dachau, very hard to find and not signposted at all, I wonder why? We finally found it with the help of the GPS and parked the car close to the site. What can I say about Dachau the very start and model for all concentration camps in Germany and Poland where 43000 souls were murdered and burnt in the furnaces. We saw the killing wall (with blood ditch) where prisoners were lined up and shot, we saw the furnaces and then the second ones built because the first one could not keep up, we saw the site where the American liberators found the ashes of thousands of bodies lying in the ... read more

Waking up this morning the weather was looking very poor with heavy clouds, can’t see the mountains and all round lousy, still we were here so plan ‘A’ was put into place and we headed off to the castles intending to take some pics on the way. We did that then the skies opened up and it rained steady. Deciding that photos was a bad choice in the rain we decided to head off to Innsbruck in the morning and do the castles in the afternoon, Innsbruck is about 90k away in Austria. As we headed up into the mountains the weather seemed to clear. We went up through Fernpass and stopped at the top for coffee, bought a nice small bottle of schnapps and enjoyed the view for a while. Moving along we came to ... read more

Leaving the neat little town of Rothenburg we headed on the Autobahn down towards Füssen (243km) our next overnight stop intending to stop at Landsberg am Lech for a single purpose, for Pam to photograph a weir across the river. Another nice town and once Pam got the shots we had a quick walk around, had the inevitable coffee and headed south again. The next stop was the Weiskirche a very famous church built in the Roccoco style circa 1700, arriving at the church we had a look inside and the ceiling frescoes are quite stunning, leaving the church we could not quite make out the actual church with a photo we had of it, thinking oh well must just be a perspective thing we headed off. A few kms down the road we found a ... read more

Having seen much of Rothenburg we set off this morning in the car for a drive down the romantic road to Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen, two more walled towns around 100km from Rothenburg. On the way we diverted to Schillingsfirst to have a look at the large Baroque Schloss overlooking the valley, we arrived at 9.00 only to find it wasn’t open until 10.00, so we continued on our way south as planned and intended on visiting later in the day on the way home. We first arrived at Dinkelsbühl and visited the large 16th century Gothic church, as churches go it was quite impressive, the adjacent town hall dates back likewise to the 1600’s and is still a functioning town hall today, as such it is the longest known seat of local government in Germany. Leaving the great town of Wursburg we set off south on the Romantic Road to Rothenburg some 100km away and arrived at around 3.30pm. Rothenburg is a walled town with most of the streets so small our Fiesta looked large in comparison, and with only the GPS to guide us we headed through the tiny gated entrance and found the hotel, problem, where to stop to find out where to park the car. Answer, park slightly on the footpath and partly on the road, makes sense yes? Well not to this particular German gentlemen pushing a wheelchair, who as soon as I got out of the car started to abuse me for blocking the footpath, to be fair he could not quite get the wheel chair past the car so I suggested politely that he may ... read more

The flight to Frankfurt, surprise, surprise was uneventful and we collected our rental car no problem at all, well almost no problem, they did not have any maps and did not even sell any maps, no phone shop at our terminal so a minor hold up. We discovered that terminal 2 was where all the good shops were so we caught the shuttle there and within 30 mins we were sussed. Armed with maps, a much needed coffee and a new sim card for Pam’s phone we headed back to the car and on our way. My nerves were a little wound up as I remember how tricky driving is on the other side of the road so with some trepidation we set off trusting the GPS to deliver us to the right place. Piece of ... read more

Today we head off to the old part of Dubai to see the Gold Souk via the metro and then cab to the souk itself. This is a great old area of Dubai with tiny winding streets filled with shops places of work. This area is a huge contrast to the tourist areas of Dubai and is filled with real soul, sweat shops where dozens of workers sit at sewing machines and boats are unloaded by hand. There are dozens of guys rushing out from little dinghy shops to offer you watches and hand bags, all knock offs of course, you just have to be firm and say no and keep on walking. The river where the Dhows tie up are a bustle of work, sounds and people with the boast loaded high with all types ... read more

Back to the monorail this morning we caught the monorail out to the palms and well it is just spectacular seeing how the other half lives, the most expensive room in the hotel is around 100k per night, I have no idea what the cheapest night is but is well out of our price range. We stooges around for a while, had a coffee in the café adjacent to the hotel, you just can’t get in there if you are not a guest. The next on the list is the sail shaped Burj Al Arab situated on Jumeria Beach and only slightly less expensive than the palms, it is none the less a startling building and well worth the visit. As we are due to go on our desert safari tonight we headed back to the ... read more

A bright early start saw us at the airport well in time for kick off and leaving the bright sunny shores of New Zealand for the eastern city of Dubai. As is usual with us, leaving home is never without its dramas be they small or large. This time we scored some very cheap duty free booze at DFS, one bottle of scotch I took with us for those little night caps so important on any trip, leaving the other three bottles (not all scotch by the way) to collect on our way home. Arriving for our short stopover in Melbourne the anal retentive Aussie customs would not let me take through my bottle as they said it was not in a sealed bag, duh, how daft are they, we were not even going in to ... read more

Tomorrow: Depart Rome on Alitalia flight AZ202 Our last day in Rome deserved a trip to the Via Veneto, Romes most prestigious shopping area full of top brand shops, Gucci and Prada etc. Zac decided he needed some cash so selecting a suitable machine it proceeded to eat his card and dispense no cash, oh well its the last day. Walking from the Via Veneto we came across the Piazza Del Popolo which had some nice statues and a central fountain along with a nice cafe for the inevitable espresso. Leaving the piazza we walked up to the Borghese Gardens and loved the laid back area, lovely paths, gardens and families out to enjoy the beautiful day. We walked through the gardens and parks and just enjoyed the afternoon. We watched some young people do some ... read more
