Got up early today so I could get a head start on the day. Started with a short run up around the Camp Nou where Barcelona FC plays their home games. Came back to the hostel and had a small breakfast before heading down to the Placa Real (the main square) for the free walking tour. It was just a small group of us which was nice. Just like in Lisbon it was real informal and had a good convo with the Polish guy leading the tour. Walked around the Gothic District which is pretty amazing. Its a bunch of these tiny winding alleys that out of nowhere lead to these seemingly hidden squares. Beautiful area. I can only deal with so much history at a time particularly when its about stuff that happened thousands of ... read more

So today is a big day. For two reasons that have nothing to do with what I am doing today. First off, today marks a month´s worth of traveling for me. It has been an incredible trip so far and I cannot really describe it in a few words. A month sounds long but it has gone real quick and I feel like I am already counting down the days till I fly home even though I am far from halfway. As someone told me in Granada "The bug is real." Secondly, today is the start of the WORLD CUP! I am a little disappointed I will not be able to attend any football (soccer) matches while I am over here but this is a nice substitute. Just walking around today you can see how excited ... read more

So I am following up yesterdays disaster of a blog with one where I really have little to talk about. The past two days I have seen pretty much everything I had wanted to see in Madrid. The only exception is the Reina Sofia Art Museum. I plan on going to that at 7pm tonight when it will be free. Today is just a good day to catch up with stuff I have been meaning to do. Since the dishwasher here is broken I hand washed some clothes in the sink. Caught up on some blogging and added photos and hope to add a bunch of photos to facebook as well. Oh I did do one thing of note. I walked on down to the Atocha train station and booked a midday train to Barcelona tomorrow. ... read more

So I had a nice long blog typed up for everyone and just as I was about to finish and publish it the computer I am using inexplicably shut off so I am just going to quickly go through what I did today. Sorry. -did all the typical tourist stuff in city centre yesterday so I am doing stuff outside the centre today -estadio santiago bernabeu (real madrids stadium, "greatest club in all the world") -trophy room -players bench -locker room -plaza de toros -no bullfights when I am here (very disappointing) -the prado museum -good, not great -too many portraits of nobles and too much Jesus on the crucifix -tapas bars with Fabricio and some of his friends -"cien montaditos" -weather is just worse here than in Sevilla; rainy and 35 degrees lower... read more

Got up at 8am which surprisingly is the earliest I have had to get up so far to catch a train or whatever. Got to the station to purchase my ticket and was dismayed to hear that if I wanted to get a 2nd class seat, which is what my Eurail pass allows, then I would have to wait for a train in the late evening. I didn't want to waste the day sitting around Sevilla again so I had to purchase a 1st class seat which costs more than I was hoping. That's the bad news for my budget. The good news however is that I will not be staying in a hostel in Madrid. My Brazilian amigo Fabricio offered me the couch at his place as he is returning to Madrid from his business ... read more

Decided I would just pick up today where I left off yesterday afternoon. One final day of relaxation in Sevilla before heading back to the big cities for sight seeing and what not. Decided to take a little walk around some parts of the town I hadn't seen yet and ended up stopping at the Castillo de San Gorge which is now the Inquisition Museum. It was pretty small but not half bad. Even though it was pretty sombering I kept thinking about the part of History of the World Part 1 where Mel Brooks is the Grand Inquisitor. "We are on a mission to get rid of the jews jew-jew-jew-jew-jew-jew-jew¨Haha good memories. Hit up a tapas place for lunch and ordered something random off the menu and it was a solid choice. Just these thick ... read more

Even though I am here in Sevilla mostly to relax and not sight-see, I figured I should go see most of the big sights today. Headed out into the heat with a Brazilian guy from our hostel named Fabricio. He is currently working in Madrid as an engineer and just makes weekend trips out to different places in Spain whenever he can. Ended up just wandering around the main area for a bit before checking out the Plaza de España where they filmed parts of some Star Wars movie (Episode 2 I think). You can see why once you get there. Pretty impressive semi-coliseum like thing they built in the early 20th century. Unfortunately they are doing construction on parts of it which kind of ruined it and down here this type of construction moves pretty ... read more

Just like with the last two cities I have been in I will be attending the walking tour of the city today. Its a good way to get a good feel for the history of the place you are staying and see some of the big sights in a more interesting way than just walking around doing it yourself. Plus it's always fun to walk around and chit chat with everyone else which inevitably leads to going out for lunch or a beer after the tour. The tour guide today was a a man named Saul from Australia. The man definitely knew his history and endeared himself to the group by bringing along a water bottle with a mist fan and spraying the group every 20 minutes or so. Quite needed when its in the mid ... read more

Got up and to the train station just in time today to catch the train back to Sevilla. I wanted to get there in the early afternoon so as to give myself time to check out the city and not waste the day traveling like I have before. Rocked up to the hostel around 3pm as the Aussies would say. Took a little tour of the nearby area and picked up some groceries for my stay here. I'm thinking I'll be staying here 3 or 4 nights and just kind of taking it easy. While Sevilla is a beautiful city it doesn't have heaps of touristy stuff to do so I think this will be my vacation from my vacation, as weird as that sounds. The hostel here is fantastic, especially the rooftop terrace with a ... read more

As I mentioned in the last blog I got a pretty full day here today which I am excited for. Since I believe I will be leaving Granada tomorrow morning, today is my day to see as much as I can. Started the day off with a walking tour around the old city. These are always a good way to start a tour in a city. The guide is usually pretty laid back but has some nice historical tidbits as you go around and the group of people gives you a bunch of people to talk with along the way. Finished our tour up at this plaza that overlooks the Alhambra with the snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains as the backdrop. Pretty spectacular. A kodak moment to say the least. According to Bill Clinton this is the ... read more
