Got a quick tour from Christophe of a typical small provencial (sp?) town this morning. Was about a 20 minute drive from his place out there. The town was beautiful, no doubt about that, with a small river cutting down the center and cafes and antiques stores lined up on each side. Unfortunately a lot of stores were closed so no shopping but it was nice to walk around for a bit. Christophe, acting like the great host that he was, dropped me off at the train station for my hour ride up to Lyon and after a quick metro ride I was in the heart of Lyon walking up one the main streets. I really did not know much about Lyon except that it was on my way to Switzerland. I really wished I could ... read more

Started my day off right with a typical French meal. Hit up the local supermarket for a baguette and a wheel of munster cheese and headed over to the park near where I would meet my host a little later on. Sat out on a bench and enjoyed my meal on a beautiful morning and enjoyed how many other people I saw either walking around with their own baguette or having a little meal similar to mine. My host, Christophe, picked me up in his car by the tourist office at noon and we drove out to his place in the suburbs. I had noticed that the weather here was a little cooler than I expected and after talking to him I found out why. The Provence is notorious for its strong winds which the locals ... read more

Had another interesting breakfast with Dominique as we again struggled to communicate ha. It was also complicated by the fact that Gonzalo brought a little Spanish into the conversation so we had to add another translating dictionary to the table for a grand total of 3. Said goodbye to the two of them and made my way over to the train station. I stopped at a kebab place on the way for a doner kebab. It appears I have entered the stage of my trip where kebabs and other cheap sandwich shops from these ever popular sandwicherias has begun. I think I have had 5 kebabs in 5 days as well as a few other paninis and sandwiches. Its just so easy and cheap and good for you as well. Wait, maybe not that part. I ... read more

I got up after having a nice night of sleep in a bunk bed that I could tell was for her daughter. My bed was littered with stuffed animals and the room was full of coloring books but it got the job done. Dominique prepared me a simple and standard French breakfast of toast and espresso. It was pretty difficult trying to talk to her over breakfast because of the language barrier. We each sat there with our own English-French dictionary and used those to speak to each other in very short and broken sentences. Interesting experience. After breakfast we headed down to the port (Vieux Port) to meet up with her new guest, another CouchSurfer from Chile who would be staying the next couple of nights. I was looking forward to having someone I could ... read more

I had to leave Anils place fairly early as he had work but it worked out pretty well since I have some stuff to do before my 1pm train ride out of here. I did a little research into the Swiss part of my trip and checked out some trains and hostels and what not. I also bought another larger USB disk drive so I can safely store all my pics. So I am just going to chill in this internet cafe uploading pics until it is time to depart. I do not know if I mentioned this before but I originally was supposed to go to Aix-en-Provence and couchsurf with a woman there but a few hours before my train there I got a message from her saying she could not host me due to ... read more

So today was my big day to check out Montpellier as it is my only full day here. I started by just wandering around town for a couple hours looking for nothing in particular but still seeing a lot. Last blog I mentioned I would talk about the city so here it is. It is fantastic, one of my favorite places on this trip so far. It only has about 200,000 there and it feels like less. The city is pretty condensed and has just a friendly and lively ambience 24/7. A lot of this can be contributed to the university here and all the internationals it attracts. While the city has no real defining monument the downtown is made up of a bunch of 18th and 19th century buildings which have been well preserved. The ... read more

Disclaimer: I am typing this in an internet cafe in Montpellier on a french keyboard so I have to type slow thus a fairly weak blog which will be riddled with spelling errors. Bonjour. Had a fairly decent train ride up to Montpellier. Rode along the coast for a while on the way up so those were some pretty fantastic views. Was greeted at the station by Alice, a nice British girl who is friends with my host Anil and another CSer. Went back to her place so I could put my pack down so I could roam around town until Anil got off work. Showed me a bit around before she had to head off to take care of work. Spent a little bit of time roaming around before stopping for lunch. The food here ... read more

Got a decent night sleep in Kabul despite people coming in and out of my room all night. Oh well. That's what happens here and it's dumb to complain about it since you know what to expect. Went to take my shower before checking out and all 3 sinks in the hostel bathroom had different colors of puke in them haha. Welcome to the Kabul Hostel! I already knew I wanted to move to a different hostel tonight since I have an early train ride tomorrow morning but that pretty much solidified it. I'm heading over to Sun & Moon Hostel which is about a minutes walk which makes it nice and easy. That's all for now. I'll blog it up a little later in the afternoon. Peace for now. Got up just in time for breakfast today after getting only a few hours of sleep which seems to be the norm here. Definitely the craziest hostel I have been to so far. I was signed up to do a walking tour around the Gothic Quarter. Yeh, I know I already did one but I had planned on just wandering around this area today so I figured why not do it with a group and a guide who has an idea what's going on here. The tour was fairly similar to the last one but I really didn't mind. I was just glad to get outside and walk around the narrow alleys and have time to think to myself. We stopped by what I was told was the oldest synagogue in Europe that had only recently ... read more

Checked out of the Yellow Nest Hostel around noon today. The place was good to me for the two days I was there and if I knew how much I would have enjoyed it I probably would have just booked it for my whole stay here but after hearing so many good things about Kabul Hostel I had to give it a try so I headed down there after a quick stop at the train station to book my train north to Montpellier on Wednesday. Put down my stuff and headed out the door to my day tour of some of Gaudi´s impressive work. I started by heading to Park Guell. Getting there is a pretty daunting task. The entrance is at the top of this hill which you have to climb. Some parts are so ... read more
