michael's roommates jamming Got a quick tour from Christophe of a typical small provencial (sp?) town this morning. Was about a 20 minute drive from his place out there. The town was beautiful, no doubt about that, with a small river cutting down the center and cafes and antiques stores lined up on each side. Unfortunately a lot of stores were closed so no shopping but it was nice to walk around for a bit. Christophe, acting like the great host that he was, dropped me off at the train station for my hour ride up to Lyon and after a quick metro ride I was in the heart of Lyon walking up one the main streets. I really did not know much about Lyon except that it was on my way to Switzerland. I really wished I could have spent more time here though since from the little I saw it looked like quite a nice place to stay, especially during the summer. The river has these newly created parks on both banks that run with it for a few miles. The lawns are full of people playing frisbee and biking and just having a good time in general.
Made it to

matt vs. bear my host's flat in the afternoon and though he wasn't home from work yet a bunch of his roommates (they have 7 in total ) were there and just about to have lunch so I got to hop in on that (YES). It was pretty damn good too. Sat around and got to know the guys. They are all in a band together and are apparently pretty good since they played last night in the country wide festival that I talked about in the last blog. After lunch I got to listen to them practice a bit and was impressed. They are known as the Grabben Orchcesta if anyone wants to check them out. I promise it is worth it.
My host Michael got home a little later and we talked a while about his trip to Australia which he is doing in the fall. He is a huge mountain climbing aficionado and Australia and France have the worlds best climbing so he seems to be in a pretty good place night now. He is also into this slacklining thing which you may have seen before. You tie this flat rope to two trees very taut and then attempt

typical Provence town to balance on it and from there do other things like juggle and flips and whatever else you want to try. Did this with him, his girlfriend and a few other friends. And wow, it is soooo hard at first. It took me about an hour before I was able to stand up on it confidently. Even then all I could do was just stand there. I may have to get one of these things when I go back home so I can show up Michael the next time we meet. I think it'll be worth it. Went back to his place for dinner and sat around the living room messing around on the instruments everyone had lying around. A nice little evening with everyone and ended up playing the greatest video game of all time, Mario Kart for a few hours before hitting the hay. I could not beat him at that either so I've got a few things to practice when I get home. I will get my revenge. Definitely a fun time it in what appears to be a real fun and young city (100,000 students). Unfortunately I do not have more time here but on the

lyon bright side I am heading into the Swiss Alps so I really cannot complain. Southern France has been fantastic and really not what I expected. The people were incredibly hospitable, quirky and fun and I saw no signs of the anti-American sentiment that we talk about the French having at home. Perhaps I was just lucky but I don't think that's the case. Anyways, I've got a long day ahead of me tomorrow so it's time for bed.
