dusk
the alhambra at dusk As I mentioned in the last blog I got a pretty full day here today which I am excited for. Since I believe I will be leaving Granada tomorrow morning, today is my day to see as much as I can. Started the day off with a walking tour around the old city. These are always a good way to start a tour in a city. The guide is usually pretty laid back but has some nice historical tidbits as you go around and the group of people gives you a bunch of people to talk with along the way. Finished our tour up at this plaza that overlooks the Alhambra with the snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains as the backdrop. Pretty spectacular. A kodak moment to say the least. According to Bill Clinton this is the best place in the world to watch a sunset and we all know Slick Willy never told a lie. I'm going to take the former commander-in-chief's advice and return here tonight to watch the sunset.
Went out with a handful of people to a tapas bar for lunch. I figured the portions were going to be pretty small but I was dead wrong. Ordered
sierra
granada and the sierra nevadas two beers for 2 euro a piece and ended up with a spicy ham sandwich, fries, crab puffs and a hamburger. Not a bad deal at all. Think I'll be back here for dinner as well. Ended up talking to a fifty-something couple from Utah who are traveling with their 18 year old daughter. All staying in our hostel. Apparently this couple almost always stays in a hostel when traveling and takes her with them whenever they can. As I said about Richard in Lisbon (traveling with his nephew) that I would love to be doing that when I am their age. Very kind people as well.
Had a little siesta up on the rooftop before heading out to the Alhambra. As my pamphlet says it was "conceived as a palatine fortified town beginning in the 12th century and was used as the residence for the Nasrid Sultans, high commanders, civil servants of the royal court and soldiers of the elite. Apparently, the Sultan asked the designer to create a "heaven here on earth" Probably the toughest job assignment I have ever heard but they came close and it probably looked heaps better back then as well. The place

religious procession gets a lot of hype so I was a little worried it would be something of a let down when I finally got up there, but that was not the case. It's masterfully preserved and has some pretty incredible views out over the rest of the city and the nearby Sierra Nevadas. Just like the Palacia do Pena in Sintra I recommend checking it out online since I cannot do it justice at all. Anyways, I strolled around the palace and the rest of the grounds for 2-3 hours before my camera died and I had little choice but to come back to the hostel to recharge it so I can use it during the sunset later.
