This morning I got a cab to take me to Victoria Station. There was no way I was lugging all my stuff on the tube at 6 am in the morning. I was just in time to catch the next Gatwick Express train, and surprisingly, it was way nicer than the one I'd taken when I first arrived in London. Then I realized I was sitting in first class. Duhhhh. When I arrived at Gatwick I checked in and shopped for a bit, then made my way to the gate. It didn't seem like I waited that long. The plane was only about twenty percent full, it was amazing. I got four seats to myself. It was the best flight I have ever been on. An eight hour flight only felt like three hours. I even ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London May 21st 2010

Was still lonely today without my tour mates but determined to not have a repeat of yesterday. I got up and got ready and decided to head out without a plan. First I had to go back to H&M to get the security tag taken off my dress that they had forgotten yesterday. I managed to use the tube all by myself, which was a miracle. I got off at Picadilly Circus and saw around that area. I went to the store and then headed back to my hotel to meet my friend from the other night at 1:30. We ended up back by the London Eye and we decided to go on it. The wait wasn't too long, and it was actually pretty cool. It was scorching hot in London by now and luckily the ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London May 20th 2010

My most pitiful travel day ever was spent...sleeping. I slept the ENTIRE day today. So nothing good for a travelogue. I was so exhausted from the tour I really needed it. But I feel bad for spending an entire day in London stuck inside my hotel room in bed. Oh well.... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London May 19th 2010

Today was my first time in Europe that I got to actually sleep in! I didn't have anything planned for today, and it felt nice since the last 10 days had been so action-packed. I woke up at about 9 am, showered, and got ready to go out. I decided to do some shopping (yeah, not so touristy, but I didn't care at this point). I wanted to go to Oxford Street, because I'd heard the best shopping was there. However, I had no idea how to take the tube. I looked on my map and figured it was close enough to just walk to. I set out using my London map on my iPod, and using the wireless at the RN I was able to pinpoint myself on the map. If I had continuous wireless, ... read more

Oceans and Seas May 18th 2010

Today was our last day. I was really starting to get depressed now that it was finally here. I got up early and had a drunken shower, and then realized all my stuff was still on the bus. I had to wait until breakfast for Russell to open the doors. I was finally ready and we had to say our first goodbyes immediately. Korryn was staying in Paris as she was going to visit her boyfriend in Nantes, France. Then we drove to the airport, where we said goodbye to Amanda T, Summerlyn, Haley, Albert, Adrien, Duncan, Carli, Erica, Paula, Amanda S, and Lisa. There were way more people leaving in Paris than I thought would be. There was only 23 people left by the time we were heading out to Calais. The bus was so ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris May 17th 2010

I woke up very early in the morning to find that I had a very sore throat. I knew I’d feel worse when I eventually got up, and I was upset that it had to happen in Paris. So far not too many people had the dreaded Contiki cough, but I knew this was how it started. Surprisingly, when I woke up and ate I felt much better. That was the only part of the trip when I actually felt sick. Just as we were about to head into the city it started raining. I was upset because not only was I going to be spending the whole day outside in Paris, but we had our group photo, farewell dinner, and pub night that evening. I didn’t want my hair to be ruined right away! I ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris May 16th 2010

Breakfast was at 6:45 am today. We left early because today was our longest drive of the tour, to Paris. This was our final city, and the city I was looking forward to the absolute most. It still wouldn’t quite hit me that the tour was going to be over in two days. I was feeling pretty bad from the night before but was nothing a nap on the coach couldn’t fix. I slept for the first three hours, until our first pit stop. Here me and Korryn decided to switch seats. Until now I had always sat in the same seat at the front of the coach with Emily. Korryn wanted to see what the front was like, so I switched to the back of the coach where I sat with Chelsea. Everyone was very ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Lauterbrunnen May 15th 2010

I was actually able to sleep in today. It felt pretty nice, especially going to bed early the night before. Today I had paid for and planned to go up the Jungfrau mountain. Unfortunately, I missed breakfast, and therefore missed Filippo telling us that the weather was bad and if we no longer wanted to go this was our chance to get refunded. As I was getting dressed I realized I had nothing to wear on my feet. All I had brought was three pairs of flats and a pair of boots. I’d had to throw my boots away in Venice as they were ruined from paragliding. I knew I couldn’t wear flats in the snow, but it was all I had, so I decided to suffer through socks and flats, which looked ridiculous, let me ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Lauterbrunnen May 14th 2010

Today was probably the worst hangover I’d have the whole trip. Also, my muscles hurt so badly today I could barely get out of bed. We were up early, had breakfast, and began our long drive to Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. I slept for the first three hours, and then we made a stop in Milan, where I had spaghetti (again). I’m finding that Italy is more expensive than the other countries we’ve been to, or maybe I’m just buying more stuff here. We had a smooth crossing at the Swiss-Italian border, and then we were on our way to Lucerne. About half an hour from the city, Filippo was telling us all about Switzerland, and how they have many rules. Just then a police car sped up in front of us and flashed a sign telling us ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 13th 2010

Today we were entering Italy! Venice was one of the places I was the most excited for. Filippo was very excited because Venice is his hometown. The scenery on the drive today was beautiful. It was all green rolling hills and castles and it looks like something out of a movie. At the rest stop I got spaghetti which was delicious but the price was almost double what I’d been paying at previous rest stops. This morning when I woke up I had the worst sore muscles in my legs which I figure must be from the constant partying, being on my feet, and the paragliding. What I didn’t realize was that it would get much worse. After a few more hours of driving we arrived at our campsite in Venice. Well, it isn’t really in ... read more
