Europe » Austria » Tyrol » Hopfgarten im Brixental May 12th 2010

Today we were leaving for Hopfgarten in Austria. This was one place I wasn’t hyped up about. It’s not that I wasn’t excited for it, I just hadn’t really thought about it before. The drive was fairly short. First we stopped so that those who chose to could do white water rafting. I didn’t want to do it, and I wish we had had the chance to see a concentration camp in that area instead. Those of us who weren’t doing the rafting went to a building where there was internet and a café to wait it out. It was raining and cold, but I had the most delicious goulash soup. It was probably the best meal I’d had yet. I spent some time on the Internet and then took a walk around the little town ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich May 11th 2010

It was an early morning today, which made me even happier that I had a good sleep last night. Breakfast was at 6:45 am. Soon after we were back on the coach on our way to Munich. St. Goar was very pretty, but there wasn’t much to do there, so it was nice to be off somewhere else. The drive seemed to take forever. We did this thing where everyone had to get up front on the mic and talk about themselves. It was cool listening to everyone else but I was terrified to talk about me. I have a public speaking problem, and I can get really shy. But it was over fast and it wasn’t that bad. At the service stop we ate at Burger King and then experienced the famous German bathrooms. Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Sankt Goar May 10th 2010

I woke up expecting to have a crippling hangover, but once I got up and got ready it really wasn’t too bad. I had missed breakfast so we got right on the coach and headed into Amsterdam. Our first stop was the Anne Frank museum. We waited in line for it to open, and witnessed two people get into a nearly physical fight over who should get in first. I’ve been reading about the Holocaust and Anne Frank for a long time, so it was very interesting to finally be able to see her house in person. It was sad though, knowing what had happened. We got to see her original diaries, and there was a bookstore, but I didn’t buy anything. We had a snack in the coffeeshop above her house, where I got a ... read more

I was up bright and early at 5 am to leave for our tour. I was upset because my hair straightener didn’t work in the outlets. I had specifically asked before I left if it would work and was told it would. I hoped it would work in mainland Europe. For now I’d just have to suffer with wild and curly hair. We all met in the courtyard of the Royal National and got our bags weighed. Soon enough we were getting on our purple coach. I sat in the front seat with Emily (USA), opposite from Melissa and Candice. As we left London I got some good views of the River Thames and the London Eye, some things I had not seen during my pitiful sightseeing attempt yesterday. Filippo got up front and gave us ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Bloomsbury May 8th 2010

We landed at Gatwick Airport at around 7:30 am. I was relieved to have made it safe and sound, but my first views of England were disappointing. It looked just like home! Plus it was raining and cloudy. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it just seemed very underwhelming. However, I was in quite a bad mood, so that probably affected what I was seeing. I got off the plane and made my way to the insanely long customs lineup. After waiting an hour, the guy who I dealt with was really rude and interrupted me answering his question about what I was doing in England to talk to his friend next to him about his T-shirt. Once I got through that I had to wait forever for my luggage (which was seriously the ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver » YVR May 7th 2010

The day had finally arrived! It was strange that I didn’t start to feel reallyexcited until about a week before I left, even though I had booked my trip months in advance. I woke up at about 3 am, and immediately had butterflies in my stomach. I was so nervous! I couldn’t believe that I was off to Europe alone, and it felt very strange. I was worried about getting homesick, but I knew two weeks would fly by. I got ready, packed my remaining items, and my parents and sister drove me from our home in Duncan to the ferry terminal in Nanaimo. I live on an island on the west coast of B.C., and basically any flights from Victoria (the main city) are ridiculously expensive, so it was cheaper to travel by land (and ... read more
