This morning we had the option of going to see the palace of Versailles outside of Paris. This extravagant palace's most famous inhabitants were Louis XIV (the Sun King) and Marie Antoinette, and it is now a symbol of the absolute monarchy and the French Revolution of the 1700's. Only about half the tour decided to go - I'm guessing the others had either already been or were too hungover from the cabaret the night before. I heard it was totally crazy. I woke up with a bad sore throat this morning. I was really hoping I wasn't getting sick. I was expecting the Contiki cough, but not for a while yet. I was excited to go to Versailles, I'd heard it was very spectacular. It is enormous! And the lineups were just as long, they ... read more

Today was our first of two full days that we had in Paris! Breakfast was at 9 am, then we all got on the coach to drive into the city. Our first stop was at the Eiffel Tower. We bought tickets and then climbed over 650 steps to the second level. A really good workout! I'd been up the Eiffel Tower before, but decided to do it again since it was much nicer weather today, plus that's where everyone else seemed to be headed. We took lots of photos at the top, where we could see very far out. The views of Paris were incredible. Once we descended the tower, we started walking to the Arc d'Triomphe. Our group today was me, Verity (from New Zealand), Teresa, Jason, and Rosi (from New York). On our way ... read more

I woke up really early this morning. I had a really bad sleep and lots of nightmares :O But I was so excited to be starting our tour! Me and Christine went down early to check in and weigh our bags. For some reason I ended up weighing in at only 18 kilos! I think they rig the scales in the Contiki Basement so that you think you have more than you actually do. Sneaky! We all waited in the courtyard of the Royal National along with a second Contiki group to wait for our tour bus. We got a purple bus; my last bus was purple too. This was one of the older buses so it wasn't as fancy and comfortable as my last tour, but still not that bad. I sat near the back ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London May 12th 2011

Today was my last day in London! I decided to use my last day before the tour started to sleep in, considering it would be all early mornings from now on. At 11 o'clock I had to check out of my triple share room because I would be checking into my included double share later. The Canadians/Americans get the night before the tour included with the tour price, but for some reason the Australians/Kiwis don't. We also get free sleeping bags. Guess we are just special! :D Down at the Contiki Basement I weighed my suitcase - it was 24 kilos! The limit for Contiki was 20 kilos, so that was a bit distressing. I'd definitely have to do some rearranging later on. I headed out to do some more sightseeing on my own. I had ... read more

This morning I met my new roommate, Megan (from Florida) and it turned out she was actually on my tour! I spent the morning on my own, doing some shopping. Yep, more shopping. I also went to Trafalgar Square, the Houses of Parliament, and Big Ben. It was a pretty cloudy day today. Sometimes it's nice just to spend some time alone, especially since I was going to be with 50 other people for the next 6 weeks. A lot of people from the tour arrived today. A big group of us decided to go out for dinner tonight. Italian again? Yep! Before dinner I met Christine, who was also from B.C. We hung out in her room and chatted for a bit. We met up with Megan, then went down to the lobby, where we ... read more

I was up early today for our day tour to the English countryside. This was something I had really wanted to do the last time I was in London, but I had never gotten around to it. Stonehenge just seemed like one of those "must-sees". The tour company we went with was Evans Evans, and I don't have anything bad to say about them. The tour wasn't exceptional, but it got us where we needed to go, and our tour guide was funny and gave us lots of information. I think it's best to go with a tour to Stonehenge, since it's quite a drive from London, and it is nice to get out of the city and see something different while you are here. I was supposed to meet everyone in the lobby, but I ... read more

I slept in this morning, I was so tired. I think I was starting to get sick already. I took it easy before lunch, and just watched TV and relaxed. At noon I took the tube to Picadilly Circus to meet Jason and Teresa for lunch. Yep, you guessed it, we ended up at an Italian restaurant. Luckily Italian food is my favourite. I had an enormous, delicious pizza. The restaurant was called Franco's Ristorante Pizzeria, and it was quite nice, I recommend it! A note about taking the tube in London. It's really great, so easy to use, and convenient to get everywhere you need to go. I bought an Oyster Card (reloadable card) before I left home, thinking that would be a great way to save money. It does give you a discount price ... read more

I felt much better this morning after a good sleep. I met up with Jessie again this morning and we did a Big Bus Tour. One ticket and we could hop on and off for 24 hours. If anyone is going to London, I would highly recommend the bus tour, it's a great and easy way to quickly see all of London's main sights. The weather was much nicer today, although on the open top of the double decker bus the wind was freezing! Unfortunately I forgot my sweater, my sunglasses, and the memory card for my camera, so I couldn't take any photos. But it was still fun! We got off the bus down by the Aquarium and Film Museum, along the Thames River. We waited in line and went up on the London Eye. ... read more

We finally arrived into Gatwick Airport at about 7 am. I was exhausted, but relieved to finally be there! After going through customs (which was much smoother than last time), and collecting my luggage, I bought a ticket for the Gatwick Express train. It took about half an hour to get into central London. This time I was able to use my expert knowledge of the tube to get to the Royal National, instead of struggling with the overpriced taxis. This was my first experience lugging my suitcase around on public transport, and it wouldn't be the last. I knew I had packed way too much, but I wasn't planning on shopping at all, so I figured I didn't need to leave much room. Once I arrived at the hotel I went straight to the Contiki ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver » YVR May 6th 2011

I was up bright and early today to catch the 5 am ferry off Vancouver Island. I love taking the early ferry, it's so quiet and peaceful and it gave me lots of time to think about the adventure I was embarking on. To be honest, I was absolutely terrified. I had never been away from home for this long before. If I thought the two weeks I had been gone last time was hard, this was going to be even worse. It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't been in a serious relationship at the time. But I tried to think positive. I was going back to Europe! I'd been working a LOT of overtime to save enough money for this, and I was determined to enjoy myself, and not miss home too ... read more
