Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 25th 2011

I was up early this morning to get ready for our day in Florence. Our first stop was at a viewpoint overlooking the city. Here we got some great photos of Florence, and we also got our official group photo taken. Unfortunately, the sun was shining so bright that half of us are all squinty-eyed in the photo. Still looks pretty good though! There is a replica statue of David at this viewpoint too (there are a few replicas throughout Florence). Souvenir group photo (11,50 euro): Join the group for a photo in one of Florence's famous piazzas or with one of the city's stunning panoramas as a backdrop. Our next stop was a leather shop where we got a demonstration. This is another Contiki sponsor, so the main point was to try to get us ... read more

We left our campsite in Venice at 9:30 this morning. Today we had a new driver - George. We were all very upset to be losing Krzysztof, who said he was being sent back to London since he was in trouble and George would be with us for the rest of the tour. Today I sat with Rosi. It wasn't going to be a very long driving day today, but we did make a few stops along the way. While we were driving down the highway we were nearly killed by a swerving semi in the other lane. They came so close to hitting us I actually cringed. Turns out the driver was texting. Not okay! After two hours we stopped at services, and another couple hours after that arrived in Pisa. I couldn't wait to ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 23rd 2011

I was up at 8 am today for our full day in Venice! After breakfast, we all got on the ferry that would take us to the city. It took 45 minutes to get there. It's not actually that far of a distance, but there are really strict rules regarding the speed of boats as they come close to the city. Apparently the waves created by ferries are actually eroding the sides of the buildings. Another thing to be aware of in Venice is the prevalence of pickpocketing. With all the tourists and crowds in such a small space, it is easy for thieves to grab whatever they want. Just be careful not to leave your purse or backpack open, and don't flash around expensive jewellery or watches. This is also true of any big European ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 22nd 2011

Today we were leaving for Venice! I was looking forward to getting back to Italy. I'd been to Venice on my last tour, but on this trip I'd get to see a lot more of Italy. We left our campsite in Antibes at 9 am. After three hours we stopped at services, and three more hours after that we arrived in Verona. Verona is where Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is set, so the first thing we all went to see was Juliet's balcony. This is located in a tiny courtyard absolutely filled with people, all trying to catch a glimpse of this "romantic" location. There is a statue of Juliet and if you rub her right breast it is supposed to give you good luck in love (bullshit). Every inch of the walls here are covered ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice May 21st 2011

I slept in this morning, and when I woke up at 8:30 am, I felt great. The antibiotics worked like a charm! This morning I took it easy and did some laundry. There aren't a ton of places to do laundry while you are on tour, so it's good to get it done when you have a chance. Usually your best bets for laundry are at bigger hotels or at Contiki's special stopovers. It can be really expensive though. At 10 am, me, Karly, Sharna, and Debs decided to take the train into Nice. Part of our group had gone on an included tour of a perfumery this morning, but I had opted out, as I've heard that it is a Contiki sponsor and all they try to do is get you to buy their stuff. ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice May 20th 2011

I don't remember much of today, it was pretty dull. I woke up at about 3 am and I was SO sick. Turns out I really wasn't that cautious about not drinking the tap water in Spain and I had become extremely ill because of it. I couldn't get back to sleep so I spent the early hours of the morning talking to my mom back home, crying, and trying to find some drinkable water, since I was so dehydrated. Luckily I managed to get some medicine from a fellow tourmate, otherwise, I don't think I would have been able to handle the very long driving day ahead of me. By the time we got on the bus at 8 am I was starting to feel a little bit better, but even though my stomach had ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona May 19th 2011

Today we had a full sightseeing tour in Barcelona! Unfortunately I didn't feel too much better when I woke up, but I determined to see all that I could. We had breakfast at 8:00 and it was onto the coach for the drive into the city at 8:30 am. First we got a tour of the city from the coach, including a drive up Montjuic for some excellent views of the city and the water. The sun was out and it looked like the weather would be great today. We were also driven to the 1992 Summer Olympics complex. Finally we drove into the center of the city and stopped at the Sagrada Familia cathedral. This is an enormous church designed by architect Antoni Gaudi, and the design is extremely intricate and beautiful. They began building ... read more

Today was an early morning start, it was up at 6:30 and on the coach by 8. Today would be an extremely long driving day as we made our way down to southern France and into Spain. I've always found the coaches Contiki uses to be quite comfortable, however anyone taller than me probably would have a hard time sitting there for hours on end. They usually give you plenty of breaks though, and the best thing you can do on the coach is sleep off that hangover! Apparently the coaches have onboard Wifi now so that would make the drives more interesting. We stopped at our first service stop at around 10:30 am. This place sold hundreds of different kinds of nougat, so being the candy and chocolate addict that I am, I bought some ... read more

Europe » France May 17th 2011

I woke up this morning at 10:26 am. I'm not even sure how I got back into bed last night, but I had fun so that is all that matters! We had a hike to the "top of the world" scheduled for 10:30 am. My initial thought was to skip it, as I had about 2 minutes to get ready, and I was very hungover. But then I thought better of it and lugged myself out of bed, threw on some clothes, and met everyone outside. We got wicker baskets with a picnic lunch that the reps at the chateau had prepared for us. Inside were baguettes, ham, cheese, water, and even Mars Bars! My favourite! The hike started out okay, but then it became quite steep and rocky. I definitely wasn't wearing hiking shoes, but ... read more

Europe » France May 16th 2011

Today we were leaving Paris, and heading south to the Beaujolais wine region! I had really enjoyed my time in Paris, but I was definitely ready to visit somewhere new. I was still feeling really homesick, but I tried to forget about it and enjoy my time on tour. Our group seemed really great so far, although it was a bit cliquey. Nothing that bad though! I was up at 8 am today for breakfast, and we left our hotel at 9 am. Today we got our day song! It was by the Silversun Pickups - Well Thought Out Twinkles. I don't think everyone was a huge fan of this song at first, but we all came to love it by the end. Before getting to services we did speed dating. This is exactly how it ... read more
