Geo: 35.89, 14.4The bus journey to Mdina was rather stretched out with a long wait in Buggiba. It was worth it though. Mdina is incredibly atmospheric. The perfect place for a horse and carriage ride (but too expensive!) It was calming to have no cars around. It is actually much smaller than it seems from the outside. We walked across to Rabat but didn't want to pay 5 euros a go to get in places! They could do with a day ticket for historic attractions. With time on our hands, we caught the bus down to the Blue Grotto - absolutely nothing at this time of year but it was a good bus ride!! It seems it's always a gamble as to whether the boats will be running or not here. Isaac added to his many ... read more

Geo: 36.0455, 14.2436The bus to Cirkewwa took us straight onto the ferry to Gozo. Isaac's first boat trip was very quick and pleasant. On arrival in Gozo, there were lots of toots (hadn't experienced this in Malta yet!) There were some very tempting offers but we made the best decision holding out for the bus. We walked up to the nearest Church then along a blossom tree and cactus lined road to the bus stop. We caught the bus to Victoria, Gozo's capital. Before we properly explored Victoria, we caught another bus to the Azure Window via the Craft Village. The Azure Window was stunning. It was a beautiful bus ride thought the craft village turned out to be ghostlike! Isaac had his nappy changed on a rock whilst we devoured a delicious ice cream. Following ... read more

Geo: 35.96, 14.36 Today we headed to Popeye Village. This turned out to be quite a surreal experience! We walked to the beach then took a minibus for 1 euro. The village is quite an amazing sight, very Disneyesque! Off season, it is desperate for visitors. There is no hiding from the company drained cast members! We even got roped into starring in our own film. Bill was a natural in his role as a pirate! Isaac made a very convincing 'screaming Sweet Pea!' Still not all that sure what I was! The cast members who played Popeye (based on the Robin Williams version rather than the cartoon) and Olive Oil were very much in love which must make the job easier! The off season nature of the village was very much emphasised by 'Santa's Village!' ... read more

Geo: 35.91, 14.52After our buffet breakfast, we walked down the hill to the beach. Evidently there are lots of good tours and excursions from here but unfortunately none that were open in February! It wasn't a pleasant walk, walking along the thin pavement, inches away from the speeding traffic fumes as they whizzed down the bends. We caught bus 37 to Valletta, knowing this was the main destination in Malta. Our first Maltese bus journey seemed to take forever! Turns out Bus 37 is to be avoided due to its 'scenic' route! Once we'd walked past the drilling of the renovation works, Valletta was stunning and retains a timeless atmosphere. Every street is as beautiful as the last. We walked to the Lower Barrakka Gardens for a gorgeous view, then up the steps of the tranquil ... read more

Geo: 35.9564, 14.3622 Isaac's first flight proved bearable. I can't say he enjoyed it (especially take off) but he wasn't traumatised by it either! On arriving in Malta, we were picked up straight away by our private transfer arranged through resorthoppa. Our taxi driver was our first glimpse of the friendly, chatty, warm hearted people that were the highlight of our stay. Not to mention their impeccable English - definitely makes for an easier life! Our first impression of Malta was that it looked very much like an oasis. All the buildings are limestone, set off beautifully by the colourful fauna, prickly pear cactuses and sparkling blue sea. Spires belonging to a multitude of magnificent Churches spring up everywhere. Throughout the whole holiday, I don't think we ever saw an ugly part of Malta! Mellieha was ... read more

Geo: -37.8143, 144.963I caught a budget Jetstar flight from Sydney to Melbourne Avalon. A very low key airport but the dull surroundings wer son brightened up by being united with Scott! I was introduced to Marina the Burina for the first time and we headed to Werribe, home for the next week. Werribee is very much at the end of the line and is quite a trek to get into the centre, especially during Easter holidays. However, this made a good excuse to sit around doing very little, very reminiscent of our much loved days in Tianjin! The neighbourhod was very Neighbours esque. All houses were one storey and open planned to make the most of the sunshine. Our first excursion was to Werribee zoo. Not the best unless you like deer! We aslo visited the ... read more

Geo: -33.8671, 151.207After what felt like months spent on an aeroplane/airport, I was able to catch my first glimpse of Sydney Opera House, shining in the bright Sydney sunshine - WOW! After battling with money and time greedy lockers at the YHA, I met Lanny, a great Indonesian friend from the Tianjin days after 9 years! Was wonderful to catch up and get shown around the sights a la Lanny! On closer examination we concurred that the opera house close up was very reminiscent of bathroom and toilet tiling. Best to keep it at a distance - from which it is truly spectacular, like a serene mixture of a shell/lotus/scallop bug. The overall effect is quite awe inspiring especially when viewed against a bright blue sea and sky. We trekked along George Street until we reached ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » Delhi August 23rd 2010

Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834We left India in style! No trains so we had to get a bus from Agra. The monsoon was plonking it down and we were stuck in a tuktuk trying to find a way to Delhi for hours on end. Luckily, a private luxury bus turned up on the road and we were able to walk (swim) onto it. The bus didn't stop in the centre of Delhi and we were stuck in the middle of no where, needing to get to the airport, with not a clue where we were. Bill eventually agreed to getting in a tuktuk but it was another hellish journey in a speeding tuktuk, along the major highway, in a foot of water. So this was our last memory of Delhi! Almost as good as our first!! ... read more
