Geo: 29.0003, 101.926The closest thing to civilisation! The nearest city is Hongya. It's a 4hr, rather treacherous, bus ride away and is developing by the second. It's common opinion that this area of Sichuan has a very bright future and they're building frantically just in case this is true! New 'European Villa' complexes are popping up everywhere. The favourite form of transport is the 'sangla,' a type of ricksaw. You are surrounded by them the moment you step off the bus! Hongya has a large city square, the centre and heart of the city. New hotels and nightclubs have recently appeared around the side of it. The local people can't quite get their heads around how quickly things are changing!... read more

Geo: 29.0003, 101.926This is Gaomiao; the nearest town. It is one of the most ancient towns in China and a world heritage sight. However, the tourist industry is yet to venture this far. As it stands, it's an undiscovered gem. Each week, Market Day is a much anticipated local event. People from all the surrounding villages gather to sell and buy goods but also to catch up with old friends and gossip! People walk for miles to get there! As an heritage site, the buildings in Gaomiao are protected. Much to their anger, the owners are not allowed to touch the appearance or structure of their houses. This is great, especially as Chinese have a developing fondness of easy to maintain concrete, public toilet lookalike new buildings. However, the wood won't last forever and the town is ... read more

Geo: 28.9985, 102.217Bill's village and the family home. Its beauty took my breath away the first time I visited in August 2006. A whole new world and I feel privilidged to now be part of it. The family home is a wooden house up in the mountains. The countryside is extremely lush and the house is comfortably nestled into the bamboo forests and blooming vegetation. It's perched on top of the family's main livelihood - their rice paddies. The whole family is up as soon as the sun rises to get to work. The lively birdsong and constant insect buzzing mean it's not that easy to stay in bed! As well as the rice, Bill's family grows pretty much every vegetable under the sun! Everything is timed to perfection. the farmers know exactly when to plant ... read more

Geo: 30.67, 104.07I'd visited Chengdu before. My clearest memories were of funeral shops and pollution. I optimistically thought there was probably much more to the city, particuarly as I was to spend the next 3 months of my life based there. However, my memory was not playing tricks on me. Chengdu has won the esteemed title of 'Worse City in China.'... read more
