Geo: -17.8289, 31.0406For our last few days in Zimbabwe we chilled by the swimming pool, visited lots of friends, shopped for crafts and tried to figure out Uncle Colin's job! It was wonderful and I could've very easily stayed out:) For me the highlight was visiting the countryside and an exemplary farm, following one of Uncle Colin's colleagues on one of his visits. It was great to see development projects in action. I was also very keen to see the Zimbabwean countryside. I wanted to know where all the people were and get a glimpse of the 'real' Zimbabwe!Time was too short. I was very sad to leave.... read more

Geo: -16.5045, 28.3137On our way back to Zimbabwe, we stayed for a night in Siavonga to admire the beautiful manmade Lake Kariba. By my standards it is much more a sea than a lake, absolutely huge! We crossed back into Zimbabwe across The Kariba Dam. Quite a feat!... read more

Geo: -17.857, 25.8958Vic Falls are the one sight we HAD to see! They were absolutely spectacular. We got very wet! We were especially lucky as it was a full moon the day we arrived so we were also able to visit the Falls at night and still see them and the rainbows by moonlight. Quite special. We stayed at Jollyboys backpackers and met some fantastic fellow backpackers, especially whilst on 'The Booze Cruise.' All you can drink, hippos, beautiful sunset and great company. What more could we want! And of course we got to finish the night off visiting the Zambian nightlife. Zambian nightlife is certainly an entertaining experience, you get to meet all kinds of people!! Our few days in Livingstone were definitely a holiday highlight. Packed a lot in - horse trekking, crocodiles, a ... read more

Geo: -15.4189, 28.2632Immigration at Zambia was another informal and entertaining crossing. Nobody seemed to care that we were there and I'm sure we could've just walked through the gates unnoticed, straight past the friendly busily chatting guards. When we were eventually noticed waiting at the desk, we handed over our passports and were then given the most carefully written receipt and most accurately placed visa stamp I've ever had! A very slow process! The road became much more interesting in Zambia, with scary mountain passes and cute little straw hut villages. The roads were rather like a truck graveyard especially as they're not lit at night. Apparently every truck driver knows the name for each turn and corner and the names of those who've died there! We stayed with good friends of the family. We got ... read more

Geo: -17.8289, 31.0406Eventually got to visit Uncle Colin (my Father's younger brother), Auntie Chanda and co in Zimbabwe. It was fantastic! After the challenge of how to spend a whole day in Jo'burg we got on the night 'Greyhound' coach to Harare. The 16hr ride was pretty painless as we were still shattered from safari and just slept all the way. Immigration was entertaining. I was quite worried about getting the Zimbabwean visa but it was the most unofficial and run down immigration ever! Got a fat jolly official who seemed quite happy to see us, shuffling through his tracing paper files and popping our 70 USD each into his front pocket! No computers or interrogation. Next we moved onto customs where Rebecca was given a marriage proposal by the cheeky customs officials. Zimbabwean immigration is definitely ... read more

Geo: -24.1401, 30.9286Going on safari has been one of my most long lived dreams and eventually I got to do it! And it definitely didn't fail expectations, it was even better. I was amazed we were lucky enough to see as much as we did in only 3 days. We managed to see all of THE BIG FIVE (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo) Quite an achievement! Safari does involve a lot of driving and I found it very difficult to stay in the car and not get out to try and hug the lovely animals, especially the giraffes who were my favourites. Such a funny looking animal yet so elegant! It really is quite something to see the animals in the wild, especially as some of them are just so huge they seem completely out ... read more

Geo: -25.7419, 28.1877Avoid this city at all costs!!! Unfortunately that is quite difficult to do considering all onward connections to Africa originate from here. I'm not sure how true its reputation as the most dangerous city in the world is. We didn't really venture into the city, scared by the rumors and the taxi fares. We spent most of our time in 'The Backpackers' Ritz,' a convenient place and probably the only place worth staying at in Jo'burg. The staff try to lighten the morbid atmosphere of the place but still there is nothing to do in the area apart from walk around extremely snobbish and expensive shopping malls. Johannesburg's speciality is its security systems. People seem scared even to leave their cars. They just stay in their barbed wire 'boxes' too scared to go any ... read more
