Geo: 39.3194, 118.285After having taught English to Spanish and Italian kids all summer I needed a break and there's no better place to chill and unwind than my beloved China. I had already been back to Tianjin at Christmas and Easter so this time I decided to venture a bit further, see some of the sights I hadn't seen yet and visit some friends. Ruth was my partner in crime! It was a whirlwind tour, we got to see loads, had a HUGE amount of fun and met some great people. I even got to see 'Jay' (my favourite Chinese popstar) in concert along with lots of other famous singers at the Beijing Workers' Stadium. The major highlight was getting to hug a panda, probably the most amazing experience of my life!... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul June 20th 2005

Geo: 41.0078, 29.1678Istanbul is somewhere I'd always see on Holiday programmes and always want to visit. So I jumped at the chance to visit. Even better, I was able to meet Nurlan on his way back to Azerbaijan. Perfect excuse! I had no idea Turkey, was such a wonderful country as a whole. I had a fantastic time, being a genuine independent backpacker, meeting lovely people on route. Despite common belief, it's fine being a lone female traveller in Turkey. You do get a bit of hassle but most of it harmless, just need a sense of humour. Plus you meet so many people (mainly Australians who have been working in Britain!) on route anyway it doesn't matter. the Turks are really friendly and lots of fun once you get past the compulsory chat up lines. ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823We were lucky enough to have very good friends (Valentina and Lorenzo) living in Rome. New Year was the perfect occasion for a bit of a China reunion so Moira, Nathan, Vicki and I made our way over. We benefited greatly from being in with the locals! the food was amazing, especially breakfast at the local bakery. Lorenzo and Valentina were far better than any tour guide, even providing drives through the red light district! New Year was fantastic, having a lovely meal in Valentina's Mum's gorgeous appartment, looking down at the honking cars, fireworks and chaos down below. Vicki and I were most satisfied in our hunt for 'Italian Stalians.' Rome is beautiful! Getting a lift back was quite an experience as everyone seems to drink drive in Rome. But somehow it seems ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205I treated my Mummy to a trip to Prague. I didn't know much about the city, just that it was a cheap flight and 'Czech Republic' sounded exciting! We had no idea it would be so magnificent. Quite a discovery! My greedy (!) Mother has since been back quite a few times, even having the courage to take my Father there! The craft markets are addictive. The architecture is beautiful, especially in the Old Town. Plan to walk across the Charles Bridge about 10 times a day, the panorama is great.... read more

North America » United States » New York June 20th 2005

Geo: 38.8921, -77.0241I never thought I'd visit central America. However, when I heard that my Canadian friend Mathieu was going to be spending New Year there, i was very tempted. I decided New York was one of those places that had to be visited in a lifetime and now was as good a time as any. Rebecca (my annoying little sister) decided to seize the opportunity as well. The New York toy stores didn't know what was coming at them! It was quite something actually being in New York, the city that is just everywhere all over the world. I didn't fall in love with it, like I seem to do with everywhere else but it was really great to see. Just a bit too big, developed and materialistic for my liking. It wasn't dramatically different ... read more

Geo: 31.8857, -7.55943Disappearing off to Morrocco was one of my ideas on impulse and definitely a very good one! I was studying for a term in Lille, France at the time. It was one of the many 'jours feries' and I thought why not!! I wasn't particuarly popular with the uni but a pot of pure saffron soon remedied that! I am prone to getting lost, so putting myself on my own in the maze of a Marrakech souk was a recipe for disaster. I definitely regretted my impulsive nature as I wandered around, completely and utterly lost, far too hot and burdened by my huge rucksack. However, as always it all worked out just wonderfully. I bumped into Hicham, who offered me a cup of coffee and for some reason I accepted, perfectly aware that ... read more
