For our last night in Brazil we went out for something to eat. We found a nice restaurant along the main street in Foz. We were seated at our table and waited on all night. We never had to pour a drink from our glass. As we sat the for a few drinks afterwards we noticed it was a strange place. The people in there obviously had a bit of money but some of them were acting weird. This story may seem far fetched but both of us swear by it. Two pretty girls were sitting at a table across from us. They were eating and drinking and having a good time. Two older men and a younger woman sat at a table near them. I noticed the younger girl beckon one of the two girls ... read more

First a quick note on our 22 hr bus journey from Rio to Foz de Iguazu. It wasn’t the best journey I’ve ever been on. Our seats were allocated and we had seats 1 & 2 which were right up the front. That was great as it meant we were away from the toilet but bad because it was behind the driver and I had no leg room compared to the other seats. It went by pretty fast but it was hell to sleep when you wanted to. All the bus journey I was trying to stop myself sleeping until it was actually time and when the time came I was as wide awake as I’ll ever be. Murphy’s law I guess. We stopped a few times but we actually only got off the bus once. ... read more

Mango Tree Hostel This is where we stayed for the first 5 nights of our journey. We arrived at 10pm on Thursday and we were met by Tracey at the reception. She gave us a tour of the hostel and explained the rules. For 5 days the Mango Tree was to become our home and with each day we became more comfortable. The room was perfect and we had air conditioning to keep us cool when it got too hot outside. Breakfast was the same every morning and was and served from 7:30-10:00am. Wi-Fi was available in the lobby and the internet was provided for free on three computers in a room upstairs. The hostel was very safe and had a bar open from 6pm-10pm. This was good as it meant noise was kept low at ... read more

Woke up this morning feeling a bit groggy after the few drinks last night. I don’t think the shoe shine guy would have got away to easily this morning! We had our usual breakfast of bread rolls, cheese and fruit and then relaxed a little around the hostel. The longer you stay in these places the more homely they become and when you see new faces you welcome them and chat for awhile. I met a sound guy from Uruguay who told me that the Uruguayans look at the Irish and feel as that they are a similar sized nation surrounded by larger more dominant countries we have something in common. We spoke through Spanglish (a hybrid of Spanish and English) about both of our countries. He had all his facts right about Ireland except, that ... read more

So the story goes….. I had to leave the hostel in search of a working ATM. The HSBC one around the corner was only giving out two’s and five’s and since in needed about 1000 Brazilian reals, getting them in those denominations was not going to work. Off I soldiered through Ipanema for an ATM and ended up having to walk very far to get one. I didn’t mind that much as it was a wonderful morning and it wasn’t too hot. On the way back to the hostel as I passed under some tree’s I had the misfortune of a bird going to the toilet on my sandals. I thought not so bad, at least it wasn’t on my hair or clothes. I crossed the street like some weirdo flicking my foot continuously like I ... read more

The Maracana is set to host the 2014 world cup final and what a stadium it is. It currently holds 90,000 people but holds the world record of nearly 200,000 for the world cup final between Brazil and Uruguay in 19??. Last night saw the match between Flamengo and Cabrofrinese take place. The attendance for this match was only about 25,000 but the noise and atmosphere created by the home fans was amazing. We were picked up from our hostel at about 4pm after only been dropped backed from our previous tour a few minutes earlier. A Danish couple and an American girl from our hostel were also going and we picked up three Swedish guys at another hostel shortly afterwards. We crossed the city to the famous stadium where we waited in a local bar ... read more

Well we certainly made up for doing nothing on Friday today. From 10am to 10pm we were active and it was a pretty cool and memorable day. First though I’ll finish off how we got on for the rest of Friday. We ventured out yesterday afternoon in search of a nice place to eat. We had read in the Lonely Planet (LP for future reference!) about a nice place a few blocks from us serving good local food. Slight problem though, everyone else was obviously reading the LP that day and there was a queue going out the door. Now, both of us didn’t fancy trying to figure out a foreign menu under pressure and as you picked your food before you sat we both didn’t feel up to it. Instead we settled on a nice ... read more

Well we’re finally here. Months of talking and planning are finally over. Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the ride. Our 9 month cultural development course has begun! Dublin We woke up at 4:00am having to catch the shuttle bus at 4:30am to the airport. One problem though. I wasn’t feeling good. In fact I was feeling real bad. For the first time in my life I got a stomach bug. I honestly cant ever remember getting one before. I tried to deny it but soon I was getting fairly sick down the toilet. Both my parents had caught the bug over the last few days and were forced to stay in bed it was so bad. This obviously couldn’t happen to me. I thought once I had got sick maybe that was it ... read more

“ Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the things that you did do. So throw of the bow lines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain Mid-February’08, over coffee at Sam Baileys the two of us utter the words “feck it, lets do it”. This was before we had even gone to Thailand in March ‘08. Did either one of us really believe the other? Maybe we were just getting caught up in the excitement of going to Thailand. The idea was dropped to friends and family but most brushed it aside as a fantasy or dream. Lots of people talk of doing many things but most never do much. I know ... read more

ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA…….. Today the sun decided to shine and finally we can go to the Giants Causeway! Last night we went to an Italian and both had pizza. Both of us were unable to finish our meal after all we had eaten that day so we decided to take it with us and have it today. Portrush, where we are staying, is a sea-side town full of amusements, slot machines, guesthouses and chippers. The beach stretches for what seems likes miles to another beach called White Rocks. This beach has a ‘blue flag’ and seems to be very popular. This morning we had a bit of a sleep in until 9 o’clock! Breakfast is included in our stay at the Clarmont Guesthouse. After some very nice scrambled eggs, bacon and toast we were on our way ... read more
