Day 4 of our Spanish holiday and we're on the way to somewhere that sounds like little Britain to me-Gibraltar. We have four British women on board the coach who are going to get their fags and some fish and chips. They must have been out of the UK for a long time if they're that desperate for fish and chips....or they must just be the sad, stereotypical Brit abroad. I suspect the latter... They were the same four who didn't like our guide yesterday so guess who our guide is today, yes, the same one, it's Ricardo again. He has already warned us about having an accident as people drive eating chocolate or talking on their phone so we'll be held up for one hour, maybe two. I think I'd be more concerned about being ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia May 10th 2016

Day 3 of our Spanish adventure and we are due to visit, well, Morocco. We have both been to Morocco before but I haven't been to Tangiers (today's destination) and Claire can't remember. Our travel is an organised tour so let's see how that pans out. The alarm went off at a ridiculous 5.30am which is usually when I'm about to finish work. I'm sure my body clock hates me. After a cup of coffee-free coffee I wasn't quite ready for the day. It was either cheap coffee or cheap-tasting Nescafe (that is always overpriced) so I gambled on the cheaper option and lost. Got to be bad when Nescafe wins a taste test! Hopefully I'll have chance to make a pot in future. So, anyway, posh coach, en route to Morocco at stupid o'clock and ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Nerja May 9th 2016

As we are on holiday and had very little sleep yesterday Claire let me have a lie-in today so she didn't set the alarm to go off until 7am. Spoilt I am! We were soon out and about in our Toyota Nogo but not very fast....especially up hills. We headed first for some caves at Nerja and soon had a bit of a shock as it actually stopped raining. The day remained predominantly dry too. Curiouser and curiouser.... As it had stopped chucking it down we of course undertook an indoor activity as we went underground in Cuevas de Nerja. An introductory film showed us some wonderful sights that we wouldn't get to see and we were all given one of those audio things that you have to hold up to your ear. On entering the ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Fuengirola May 8th 2016

The alarm went off at 2.15am after a few hours of lying awake farting. I'm not sure that was the sole reason I didn't get much sleep but it didn't help. Claire was very appreciative as always though. I then regaled Claire with the story of how the word holiday comes from the Ancient Greek translated as Holey Day because in olden times the Greeks spent their days off making holes in cloth. Thankfully these days we get to jump on aeroplanes and jet off somewhere interesting as I can imagine me getting quite bored of making holes in anything except David Cameron's head never mind a piece of cloth. After saying goodbye to Lia and Bod we set off in search of roadworks so we could be diverted and this time we were successful. They ... read more

Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Reykjavík January 9th 2016

The day began in the morning and went right through to the night time. Before 9am I had already marked one person out as my potential peckerhead of the day. It's only 11am now so there's plenty of time for that to change. Alarms went off early and we had a bit of time to get ready and have breakfast before our pick up to go on the Golden Circle tour. The minibus arrived on time and we picked up a few other tourists before hundreds of us congregated at Reykjavik Excursions' depot. There were a hell of a lot of buses there ready to take people on various tours in various languages. Tourism really has taken off in a big way thanks to the financial crisis that's for sure. As we boarded the bus some ... read more

Talk about cramming a lot in and no I'm not back to David Cameron with his pig's head. No I'm talking about day two of our sojourn to Iceland and all the things we've done today. And it was cut short too which upset a peckerhead (yay I get to use the word again!) more than us but more of that anon. The day began in the dark, well obviously, as the alarm went off at 7am. Yes Claire let me lie in till then! I think she's changed.... We'll see for sure on our next holiday though when we are somewhere that the sun rises before 11am....and there's a massive hill to clamber up beforehand.... We negotiated a bus ride more successfully than yesterday and ended up where we wanted to go, unusual I know! ... read more

Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Reykjavík January 7th 2016

Iceland Jan 7th I never thought I'd get to Iceland. Not because we were flying with Qatar Airways (thankfully we aren't!) but because it sounds so damned expensive. But then along came Groupon and for a mere £189 each we got flights, accommodation and a northern lights tour. We may not be able to afford to eat but hey, we are here! There's always some trepidation when flying. Not because it scares me in any way but because airlines are about as trustworthy as David Cameron locked in a room with a pig's head. Quite often you end up being the pig's head. I've had luggage lost twice, had a flight cancelled when I was already on board, missed a connection due to airline staff and had an airline go bust on me the night before ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok November 22nd 2015

And as the holiday comes to an end let's reflect a little. We travelled with KE Adventures and I had been a little apprehensive about being taken everywhere and not having the freedom I'm used to. I was also a bit worried about about having to travel with other people and being stuck with them for a fortnight to be honest. We didn't get a lot of free time but our schedule was packed with some amazing sights and things to do. It would have been nigh on impossible to get all that done if we'd been sorting it as we went along. The guides have been great, very informative and helpful. The accommodation has been better than I'd hoped for with some excellent hotels. Most meals that were included have been splendid and when we ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok November 21st 2015

My dear wife set the alarm for 5.30 this morning and then beat me with bamboo sticks till I bled to make me get up and photograph the sunrise. She was shouting 'get up you lazy good for nothing scabberous dog' at me too. So I got up. And the sunrise was pretty dull. And I was tired. And I'd been called a dog. Not a good start to the day. And a tiny bit of that is true too. But breakfast was good so things were looking up. The Thai dishes were exquisite, particularly the coconut soup with lemongrass in it. Marvellous. Our transport arrived early and I had to fight off two Thai ladies who were trying to carry our bags to the van. I know it's their job but they were half the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Chang November 19th 2015

So today we were left to our own devices as we could decide what to do as there was nothing in the itinerary. I guess the idea is so that people can have at least one day to relax as every other day has been jampacked. Relax....us? Claire was getting very angsty about us having nothing to see or do so we asked about things to do of our guide, Jeff. Andy and Helen decided to spend some time relaxing while us other four opted for the exciting sounding 'four island trip' thinking we'd be getting a chance to explore four islands. But no. We were picked up at 8.15 and then it was a lengthy drive up and down incredibly steep roads to get to our boat. The drive took almost an hour as we ... read more
