North America » Canada » Quebec » Québec City July 26th 2013

We have been traveling now for four weeks. This is when under normal circumstances our holidays would be over, and we would be heading back to work on Monday morning. Thinking about this makes it a bit more concrete exactly on how long a holiday we are. Even though I don't suppose we fully realize that even now. So, we arrived in Quebec City after a long 10+ hour rideshare drive; it had been quite a hassle to get that arranged on the last minute, so we had simply booked ourselves a night at Holiday Inn using Leo's reward points. We only left the hotel (and the pool side) to have dinner at a nearby restaurant. Even so, it became immediately apparent that Quebec was totally different from probably whole rest of North America. It was ... read more

North America » Canada » Nova Scotia » Halifax July 22nd 2013

When we arried to Halifax from Reykjavik, our first impression was that it was warm. It was also dark, something of a novelty after Icelands midnight sun. The traveling itself had gone well, it is a 4.5h flight from Reykjavik to Halifax, and half an hour in the bus from the airport to the city. We checked in at our hostel, and went to a nearby pub to grab some late night dinner which we ate outside on the patio, it was still roughly 25 degrees celcius even though the sun had disappeared two hour earlier. This starts to feel like vacation! The next day we set out early to explore the city. We started by going to a farmers market to buy some breakfast. As we didn't have cash, and the ATM at the place ... read more

Sitting at the Keflavik airport waiting for our flight to Halifax, Nova Scotia to depart in one hour. It feels good to leave Europe, and especially the grey and chilly weather, behind (hopefully at least). Today's forecast for Halifax was 27 degrees and sunny, and for tomorrow 24 degrees and sunny. Sounds pretty good after enduring temperatures around 10 degrees for few weeks already. It must be hard not to become depressed in climate where the peak of summer means +10-12 and grey skies. Ok, they do have the hot thermal pools to lay in for warmth, which we also did quite a few times during our time in Iceland. We spent three whole days in Reykjavik, and took it pretty easy. On the first day we rented a car to drive through the sights at ... read more

Europe » Iceland » North » Akureyri July 16th 2013

After a long and tiring trip from Torshavn, first by ferry from Tórshavn to Seyðisfjörður and then with busses from Seyðisfjörður to Akureyri, we were exhausted. We had managed to sleep only a few hours in the couchettes we had in the ferry, although we booked this trip already in April these were the only places left on the ferry. Our first evening in Akureyri we therefore only did some research on what to see, made dinner and went to sleep early. The next morning we were still really tired, and as there was rainy weather promised for all of the day we decided to explore Akureyri. Our hostel, a nice experience called Akureyri Backpacker, is in the middle of Akureyri so we just walked around from there and looked at the city. The city is ... read more

Europe » Faroe Islands » Torshavn July 10th 2013

Monday was a rainy day all over Faroe Islands, so we decided to stay in Torshavn to look around the town and to rest our feet after several days of hiking. We started by taking a little walking tour around an old citadel and lighthouse, as well as Tinganes, which is the old town of Torshavn and is still home to Faroe Islands government buildings, for example office of the prime minister (which btw is located in a cute, bright red wooden house with grass roof :). After a coffee break we walked some more around the town, via a church to a shopping mall. We thought we would possibly buy a book about Canada, but couldn't find any. In the afternoon we attended a free concert at the Nordic House, which is a Nordic cultural ... read more

Suðuroy Setting out early in the morning when the rain was pouring down and the winds were close to 20 m/s to sit in a ferry heading out on the Atlantic ocean didn't seem that good an idea at the time, but luckily our faith in the Norwegian weather site yr.no paid off. The ferry ride was a bit bumpy, but when we arrived to Suðuroy at nine the rain stopped and after maybe one hour we had the sunshine promised. We didn't really have a clear plan of what to do once at Suðuroy, the southermost of the Fareo islands, so once there we walked to Tvøroyri. Tvøroyri is the second biggest town on Suðuroy, and close to the ferry. It proved to be a quite outstretched town, maybe 5 houses wide between coast and ... read more

Arriving in Torshavn We arrived in Torshavn (capital of Faroe Islands) on Wednesday evening 3.7. after a 30 hour boat trip. The boat was a lot like Viking Line cruise boats, even if we thought beforehand it would be much smaller. The main difference to the Viking Line boats was that nobody seemed to be drinking and partying :-) We too spent most of the time sitting and reading, having an occasional coffee or meal. We are staying in the B&B accomodation of a sweet lady called Fanny. Her apartment is within few minutes walk from the harbor, as well as town center. Well, actually everything in Torshavn is within easy walking distance: when we took an evening walk to take a look at the city, after 10 minutes walk we reached a meadow with sheep ... read more

Europe » Denmark » Region Nordjylland » Frederikshavn July 1st 2013

After a luxurious breakfast at the Scandic Plaza in Aarhus we bought tickets to the train to Frederikshavn and left our first desination on our trip. We had included Frederikshavn to our trip mostly in order to be close to Hirtshals on our way to the Faroe Islands, but we had seen some nice pictures of the town when we googled it so we hoped for a cute small town. The train trip to Frederikshavn went well, the only set back was the wifi that stopped working after Aalborg. Our reserved places were taken when we got there, but the people sitting there quickly moved to other places so we actually ended up with better seats (window+isle next to each other in stead of window seats facing each other. When we arrived to Frederikshavn we were ... read more

29.6.2013 Århus Finally we have gotten to this point; we are actually on our big trip, going to travel around the world during the next year! The last weeks before our departure on June 28th were very hectic, the last days especially. We spent almost all our time either at work, or packing the apartment into boxes. Getting everything done on time meant also that we slept rather short nights during the last days at home, so we were actually rather tired when we arrived in Århus yesterday afternoon. We selected Århus as our first stop on the trip because neither of us has seen other Danish cities besided Copenhagen before, and it is also conveniently on our way to Hirtshals where our boat towards Faroe Islands leaves on Tuesday. Since arriving in Århus we have ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Crystal River December 31st 2012

After St. Petersburg we headed back to nature. Up in Crystal Springs is an area with constant 72 degrees Fahrenheit (about 22 degrees Celcius) which attracts lots and lots of manatees when the temperature in the Sea drops below 68 degrees in winter. The manatees in turn attracts snorkler and kayakers, and in this case also us. We had read the best time to see the Manatees is in the morning, so we decided to rent kayaks starting from sun rise and also booked a hotel in town for the night. With the preparations done we went to see some Manatees from a bridge over the stream leading to the spring and actually were able to spot a few gliding under the bridge. The manathees were however swimming at deeper water so we didn't see them ... read more
