Sitting at the Keflavik airport waiting for our flight to Halifax, Nova Scotia to depart in one hour. It feels good to leave Europe, and especially the grey and chilly weather, behind (hopefully at least). Today's forecast for Halifax was 27 degrees and sunny, and for tomorrow 24 degrees and sunny. Sounds pretty good after enduring temperatures around 10 degrees for few weeks already. It must be hard not to become depressed in climate where the peak of summer means +10-12 and grey skies. Ok, they do have the hot thermal pools to lay in for warmth, which we also did quite a few times during our time in Iceland.
We spent three whole days in Reykjavik, and took it pretty easy. On the first day we rented a car to drive through the sights at Golden Circle; meaning Tingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall. We had a good time driving around, we picked four hitchhikers to return the favors we enjoyed at Faroe Islands. After checking out the three main sights it was a bit difficult to come up with more things to see to fully utilize our car, because on many roads one would need a 4WD car, which
we didn't have. We ended up driving to Gufudalur near the town Selfoss to see some more steaming holes and boiling mud. After that we decided to drive to Blue Lagoon to take a bath in the light blue waters. The road we took was awesome with great mountain and lava field views, but what we found at the Blue Lagoon was not so awesome: the cheapest ticket to Blue Lagoon costs 40 euros each, and we would have had just two hours time before the place closed. We decided to skip that for the day. At the end we skipped Blue Lagoon altogether: it started to seem a bit annoying to pay 40 euros plus bus tickets when we had been at a very similar bath (although smaller) near Akureyri for about 8 euros each. Instead we bathed at Laugardalur thermal pool two times, which was also nice :-)
Rest of the time in Reykjavik we took things easy, sleeping late and just walking around the town a bit, sitting at cafes, pubs and restaurants. Reykjavik seems to be quite cool town, it has lots of arty shops, cafes, restaurants etc, and of course those brightly colored small
houses. Even though it's quite small, we could easily entertain ourselves by walking around for few days. The only issue was the weather. By now we were fed up with greyness, rain and cold. It just didn't feel tempting to do any outdoor sightseeing, or activities for that matter. It was far nicer to sit inside reading a book over a pint of beer, of cup of coffee. We also went to a free concert at the Botanic Gardents café where two local artists played. Unfortunately we did not try out the famously wild nightlife...partially because we felt too old and tired, partially because we didn't feel we had anything suitable to wear with our hooded sweaters and raincoats. Instead we saw the movie Monster University :-)
