We spent roughly one day in St Petersburg, after spending the day before almost entirely driving there from the Everglades. The weather was rainy which made the drive in the dark, heavily trafficked highways a bit scary. Anyway, we made it to our Marriot hotel in Clearwater (town next to St Pete). In the evening we went for food to one of the many fastfood chain restaurants we saw accross the road. At first we didn't see any way to cross the highway on foot, so we actually had to go by car to the McDonald's 100m away. We did see later that there actually was a pedestrian crossing, but somehow this represents well the way American towns are laid out: everything seems to assume people are moving around by cars..often all businesses, like restaurants, cafés ... read more

Everglades 26.-27.12.2012 We spent two superb days exploring the Everglades national park area. Our hostel, Everglades International Hostel, provides free breakfast in form of ingredients to make your own pancakes on an outdoors stove, so that's how we started our mornings: Leo making the best pancakes of the hostel (a comment he received from a co-resident, and I cannot disagree either ;-). On day one we drove our car to Shark Valley visitor center planning to rent bikes to take the 24 kilometer bike ride around the wetlands. We arrived at the entrance to find out that firstly, the parking lot was full, and second, there was a waiting list to rent bikes. Neither issue proved too serious, though, we managed to park the car a bit outside of the park, and landed bikes after some ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Keys December 24th 2012

After our Miami stay we had planned two or more nights in the Florida Keys. We had booked hotels for one night in Marathon and one (Christmas Eve) in Key West. For Christmas we didn't want to take any chances, after that we have no bookings and have planned go where we feel like that particular day! So we set out towards the Keys in our Volkswagen, and after some driving we realized we were already out on the islands. To begin with it was a little hard to see, there were woods all around us and nothing had really changed since we left Miami, but once we got to the Middle keys the landscape started to look more like the archipelago outside of Turku, spiced with an occasional palm. And a little before Marathon the ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Miami December 23rd 2012

It's day before Christmas eve; 8 o'clock in the morning. I (Johanna) have been awake already for more than an hour, even though we didn't go to bed until 2AM last night. I thought I had started to get over my jet lag as yesterday I managed to sleep until 7.30 (having woken up well before 6 on the first two mornings), but apparently that is not the case. Leo of course is fully accustomed to the time zone since he has been in US for more than a month now. We have been in Miami now for three days. We are staying at South Beach, Washington Avenue. The first two days Leo was still working remotely, so I was looking around the town mostly on my own during the days. I ended up spending most ... read more

Europe » Finland » Uusimaa » Espoo July 22nd 2012

After four weeks, five countries and 13 cities (correct numbers depending whether or not you want to count Vilnius, Lithuania in), we are back home, in Otaniemi, Espoo. Journey home was a long day of traveling in a bus from Vilnius to Tallinn, and a ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki. Even though this took all day, I would still say it was a nicer way to travel home compared to simply hopping on a plane. It's always nice to sit in a vehicle and stare at the passing landscapes. Plus somehow that gave us a chance to orient ourselves better towards returning to Finland again. Looking back to our Black Sea Adventure 2012, the overall feeling is that we really saw a lot. A lot of places that were rather different from each other. First islamic ... read more

Europe » Belarus » Minsk Voblast » Minsk July 18th 2012

Minsk was something like a bonus destination on our trip, since we didn't originally plan to go there, but it is on our route home, and makes a good one day stopover on our way from Kiev to Vilnius. 12th city of the trip in total. We arrived by night train at 8.30, again tired and feeling worn after the night on the train. We can sleep ok on trains, but whenever the train journey includes a border crossing we are woken up in the middle of the night by several people checking our passports, asking about our luggage etc. This takes time, so we end up being awake something like an hour in the middle of the night. Also the fact that there are no shower possibilities etc..well, let's just say a night on the ... read more

Europe » Ukraine » Kiev July 17th 2012

Today is our last day in Kiev. We packed our bags and left them at the hostel, and after some breakfast and blogging at the cheap café nearby we set out for Caves monastery. The monastery is Ukraines most important religious site, and consists of two parts, the wall surrounded Upper Lavra and the Lower Lavra where the most important religious places are. After a few kilometers of walking we arrived to the Caves monastery. There was a 5€ per person fee to get into the Upper Lavra for, for cameras it was more expensive so we left them in their bags. The Upper Lavra was nice, but not that special. There was one impressive church and some smaller museums (without any English texts), but the two main things we were interested in, the museum of ... read more

16.7.2012 Kiev We had an early wake up at 7.30 and even though we hadn't stayed up particularly late the night before, we were kind of tired all day. But, we had to get our bureaucratic stuff done, so couldn't stay in bed. We will return home by train, bus and boat, and the quickest route goes via Belarus. To go to Belarus we need a transit visa, which gives us permission to stay for 48 hours. So, first thing in the morning (after a heavy breakfast consisting of sausages, fried potato pancakes, fried mushrooms and coffee) we headed to the Belarus Embassy via photo shop to get passport pictures done. When we arrived at the embassy, we were first directed to some slightly shady office on the other side of the street, where a man ... read more

With a quiet room, good beds and some sleeping debt from our train ride we slept late. Johanna was the early bird and went out before me to do some shopping, while I prioritised my pillow over the womens wear shops she was going to visit. When I finally got up I went for brunch at a nearby restaurant (soup and bread for 1,5€!) and then we met up with Johanna at the Independence square. We took the metro a few stations north and went down to Dnipro to look around. This side of the river didn't however look very inviting, so we quite quickly went away from the river and found ourselves some coffee, and after this we went to St. Andrews Descent, a curvy street leading from the lower town to the upper town. ... read more

Our train arrived in Kiev at around 7 o'clock in the morning. We didn't have a room booked and didn't really feel like staying in at someone's apartment again, so we took the subway from railway station to the center to find breakfast and wifi to find a hostel. We managed to book a room at DownTown Hostel and walked there with our backpacks. Luckily the room was immediately available so we could get settled and freshen up a bit. Since we were tired after the night on the train we didn't want to do any heavy sightseeing, but decided to do a walking tour which was descibed in our guidebook. It was supposed to last about two hours but for us it was more like six. We took a few breaks, but we were quite ... read more
