Our visit to San Fransisco was much characterized by the neighborhood of Tenderloin, where we had our accomodation. We had a bit of bad luck with our airbnb booking attempts, as two first ones failed. By the third attempt we were already in a hurry to find a room, and simply chose the first decent sounding option: private room, cheap and just few minutes of walking to the heart of downtown San Fransisco. In the hurry we didn't bother to read the reviews of previous guests. Upon arrival to the Tenderloin area in the middle of the day, it was already obvious that this wasn't the best place to stay. The streets around our quarter were filled with the homeless, drunks, junkies and mental cases. "Normal" looking people were few. Even so, it wasn't that scary ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas September 3rd 2013

After a rainy night in Grand Canyon we decided it was time to return to civilization. One reason for that was of course also that we needed to return our car to San Francisco in two days. On our way between Grand Canyon and SF we had a few places we wanted to visit, but at this stage it felt natural do go as far away from nature as possible, to Las Vegas! When you go to Vegas it helps if you have a reason to celebrate, and we quickly found one as we booked a room at Excalibur through Hotwire, I had been promoted to manager in my absence! This will of course not affect anything for another year as we are traveling, but definitely counted as a reason to celebrate all night long. :) ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Kanab August 25th 2013

We entered the town of Kanab as the destination point on our navigator. Kanab is a small town in Utah, where dozens of western movies were filmed until the 70s. During those days stars like John Wayne and Robert Mitchum inhabited this town of about 3000-4000 people. According to our guidebook Kanab would still have that old western film atmosphere to it, but we found that to be an overstatement. Instead, we did our laundry and spent some time looking for an open restaurant. All we could find was McDonald’s. It was Sunday, and apparently on Sundays people in Utah go to church like decent people, instead of keeping their restaurants open. We were headed for Grand Canyon, but on the way decided to drop by at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. We had seen ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Zion National Park August 25th 2013

From Salt Lake City we headed southwest with plans to visit three Utah national parks: Capitol Reef, Bryce and Zion. They are all about rocks in different shapes, sizes and colors. Southwestern Utah has the nickname Color Country, and that is not in vain. Already before reaching the first national Park, Capitol Reef, we started seeing orange and red rocky hills coloring the scenery. Our first stop, Capitol Reef National Park, was the most peaceful of the three. We set up our camp again at the bargain price of 10 dollars a night for a tent site, then set off to see what the park had to offer. The park has several orchards where visitors can freely pick fruit to eat. Being hungry, we started by sampling peaches, apples and pears. The fruit were not really ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Salt Lake City August 21st 2013

We came close to learning the meaning of life in Salt Lake City. Visiting the Mormon capital of the world, of course we had to check out some Mormon activities at their "headquarters", Temple Square. There is a building called Tabernacle which has very special acoustics and almost 200 year old organs. Daily half an hour organs concerts are given there at noon, so that's where we headed. In the beginning of the concert an elderly gentleman, who was a missionary volunteer, gave a brief introduction to the building and the organs, and also said that after the concert he could answer questions like "what is the meaning of life", "who are we", "why are we here", "where are we going to". We were tempted to go and ask, but unfortunately we chickened out on the ... read more

WOW! One whole week in Yellowstone, a place that seems to have it all in regards of nature. Scenic views, volcanic hydrothermal features, increadible wildlife. There were also a lot of other people sharing the fun and at times it felt crowded, but what can you do, the place is so exceptional so people arrive from all over the world to see it. Our first night we stayed at Madison campground, near the west entrance. This was the first time we used our newly acquired tent, and it turned out to be easy to set up, well breathing and rainproof. It was just big enough, my toes are touching the tent cloth when the pillow we bought from Ikea is touching the tent in the other end. The only thing that wasn't coping with the Yellowstone ... read more

North America » United States » Washington » Seattle August 12th 2013

I knew I would like Seattle after I had taken a 5 minute walk downtown and immediately spotted a shop specializing in maps in all shapes and sizes, and a shop specializing in colorful umbrellas. After we arrived in the city, I had had to leave Leo sitting in Starbucks and go shopping by myself, as I had to take care of some shady businesses I could not let him see (= his birthday present). The impression I got on that first walk downtown was enforced the next day as we walked around together - we found many more cute shops and cafés (even though most of them seemed to be Starbucks, home to which Seattle is). It wasn't all cute and idyllic, though. In the evening of our arrival to Seattle we went to a ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver August 9th 2013

Blue skies, sunshine, a temperature at 23 degrees Celcius everyday. The weather stayed the same for our whole time in Vancouver, but we didn't miss the variation! One of the other guys staying at the same B&B told us this is exceptionally good even for Vancouver, usually it rains every now and then, during our stay I don't think there was ever a cloud in front of the sun. So with perfect weather we might have a more positive picture of the city than we otherwise would have. Our first encounter with the city was not that positive. Not negative either, just a little "so what so special about Vancouver?". During our stay we had encountered several persons naming Vancouver as their favourite Canadian city, our first impression was that it looked only nice, felt expensive, ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto August 4th 2013

The first thing we encountered after getting off the bus in Toronto was a rather aggressive young woman walking with her dog; she would let the dog approach people and then start saying things like "what are u doing touching my dog". It was also raining, so we had to stand in shelter for some time before we could walk to our apartment. Things did get better soon, though. The apartment was great, perfectly clean, stylish apartment on the 18th floor of a downtown highrise. We had a hotel-like room with very comfy bed. The best thing, though, was definitely the balcony with view to the financial district skyscrapers. Greetings to you, Emerson, in case you are reading this ;) We enjoyed the big city atmosphere in Toronto for three full days. On the first morning ... read more

Due to the problems with our ride from Quebec City we arrived late to Montréal and because of this we were a little worried about getting into our place to stay. We had again booked through airbnb, a site to find rooms in ordinary peoples homes, and our hosts weren't actually home so we were supposed to get the key from one of their friends. However, when our arrival was delayed she decided to stay at the apartment for the night in order to let us in and give us the key. After the first night we had the whole apartment to ourselves, a town house apartment with a nice little backyard and excellent cooking opportunities at the price of renting a room! Our apartment was only a few metro stops away from downtown, so on ... read more
