Even with our rocky start to our stay, Jakarta did not fail to impress! Our plane from Malaysia had been delayed, so, instead of arriving from Malaysia at 22:00, we arrived at 02:30am - we honestly though the man at the check in desk was joking when he said, "Oh, weren't you contacted? The flight's been delayed to midnight." And this was at 17h00. However, the time at the airport wasn't a complete waste, we read about the very colourful history of Indonesia which brought us to new levels of appreciation for the country. So there we were, Darrell and I, curled up on a wooden bench at the airport, shifting our backpack pillows for maximum comfort, trying to sleep away the hours to dawn. I remember having a giggle when - at about 4am, a ... read more

The only reason we had ended up in Malaysian Borneo was that we were looking for a link between the Philippines and Indonesia, and the cheapest option was to fly through Kota Kinabalu. As we started to look into Sabah, the Eastern province, we found more and more to do there. Aside from having some of the world's best primary rainforest, and one of the highest peaks in Asia, just off the East coast is an island called Sipadan. The island sits atop a rocky spike that rises 600 meters from the surrounding sea floor. The sheer wall between the deep blue and the pristine coral reef that surrounds the island attracts a host of marine life and makes for some of the best diving in the world. Both Scuba-nuts, we couldn't pass by without a ... read more

It was really good to be waking up late on our last morning at Uncle Tan's Wildlife reserve. The big group that arrived the morning after us (we were small in comparison, only 7 of us), were already off on their morning boat safari, so everything was particularly peaceful. We didn't have any 'programs' on this day and it was nice to be able to chill in our hammocks, and watch the monitor lizard and wild pigs doing their thing. There was a giant squirrel (Darrell thinks it might have been a lemur) just above me, and the Macaques are busy destroying the kitchen. One of the other girls and I tried to scare them away, but the alpha male ended up being the one doing the chasing and we were the ones being scared away... ... read more

Getting there... The lady at the Mt Kinabalu HQ has warned us that the bus to Sandakan would be full, and that we would probably have to bite the bullet and call a taxi. But with a taxi for the 5-hour trip costing around US$150, we figured we'd be taking our chances with the bus. We were also looking forward to getting some sleep on the trip after a 2am start up to the peak, a late flight into Borneo and an early bus to the mountain the night before, no sleep on the Ro-ro the night before that, all topped off with 2 day hiking. It was pouring with rain as we waited under the small shelter for the bus headed for Sandakan, and after about half an hour of waiting, the bus came round ... read more

The Journey With the sun starting to set on our time in Philippines, we made plans to get back from the beautiful paper-white beaches of Boracay to the Metro capital of Manila in time for our flight. Since the tiny planes making the inter-island hop had already filled all their cheap seats, we opted for a uniquely Philippino way of travelling. Taking the Ro-ro means boarding a bus, which drives across the islands, and onto ferrys for the crossings between them. Aside from air travel, it's the most direct route across a country made up of 17,000 islands. While travelling in Korea, Vietnam and Thailand, we've found the night busses a great way to get around. You get on, fall asleep, and wake up in a different place. And your accommodation and transport are paid for ... read more

Borocay was beautiful. We stayed in a down the alley, on a 2nd floor room just off the beach. As rooms go it was great - 2 double beds, fan, bathroom, shower (cold, but who needs a hot shower? It's ridiculous degrees Celsius outside!), toilet (no seat - that's only in the really fancy rooms!) and a TV, all for 500 Pesos (about US$12 / R90) Not that we spent much time there! {This was the first room we've had with a TV so far, and we turned it on to find... Super-Sport! And M-Net! Direct from SA to Boracay! Incredible! And we turned it on just as the Singapore F1 was beginning, so we watched the first ever F1 night race with a South African commentator in Boracay. Awesome! - Darrell} The main beach, White ... read more

Leaving Palawan For a while we were wondering whether we were going to make it off Cacnipa Island. With the threat of a typhoon coming through, we'd had to make peace with the fact that we may not get back to Puerto Princesa in time to catch our flight to Cebu. There are worse place to get stuck... As it turns out the wind calmed down enough for us to escape paradise, and at 6am we were on the banca surfing the waves back to Palawan. The bus schedule from the port town of Saint Vincent does not run according to time, but instead had simply a list of the order in which the minivans would be leaving. They just wait around until the van is full and then leave. We arrived pretty early, and settled ... read more

From now onwards, whenever I picture paradise, I will picture Cacnipa. We got here the long way from Sabang -Jeepney from Sabang to Salbation, Van from Salbation to San Vincente, boat from San Vincente to Port Barton, and then finally, a boat from Port Barton to Cacnipa. But BOY was it worth the effort! (-you can also take the far more time efficient and less hassel way and take a boat straight there from Sabang...) We were welcomed by a stretch of soft white sand, palm trees and water so clear we could see the coral dancing under the waves as the boat passed over it. The whole island seems to be sureal. I don't know how a place like this has managed to stay such a secret for so long. We shared the island with ... read more

My usual question, unanswered by these -- by most -- travel books, is: How did you get there? Even without the suggestion of a motive, a prologue is welcome, since the going is often as fascinating as the arrival. -Paul Theroux, To the Ends of the Earth And, in our decision to try and save a few pesos, this was truely the case in getting to **** Island. There were 2 options to get to the remote island from Sabang. 1: We could take a 2,5 hr boat ride for P1000 if there were more than 2 of us, or we could hire the boat for P4000. 2: We could take a jeepney to Salbation, and then catch the Jeepney from Salbation to Port Barton, and from Port Barton, so the boatmen in Sabang said, it ... read more
