It's hard to give an update of what we're really doing right now. There are no kids, so teaching isn't that big at the moment. I'll explain... English Village is sort of like a theme park. We've been hired to teach the One Day Program (ODP), which means that kids come to the village for the day with parents or teachers, and buy tickets to certain lessons. We then do the very interactive lessons with them. Apparently 2 weeks ago when it was school holidays the place was flooded, but the schools have all just opened, so the kids are all focusing on their curriculums. Apparently soon it will start to pick up as the schools start bringing the kids here on outings. For now we're supposed to be observing the classes and learning how to ... read more

We arrived at the airport at a frosty 3:45am! After negotiating customs etc we were out of the airport at 4:45. Our taxi driver greeted us with his "Darrell and Cathy" card and escorted us to his van. Someone in my family has just mentioned that it was a bit chilly last Saturday... well, you should know what chilly is! The minute we stepped onto Incheon soil outside the airport we were greeted by my (Cath) first -2degree C wind. Ahhh crazy cold!!! Although "Ahhh crazy cold!!!" were my first thoughts Darrell seemed to be flooded with his really great memories of his stay in America which kept him bubbling for ages :) The driver seemed to be in high spirits considering he'd probably been up since about 3 to fetch two westeners whose language we ... read more

Well, our adventure has begun! Our plane to Hong Kong landed at 7:30am. The flight was pretty comfortable, and we each had our own TVs and air hostesses bringing 12yr old Chivas Regal Scotch for a night cap. Our plane touched down and we did the imigration thing, which took about an hour, and got our visitors visas for Hong Kong. We then changed our last R320 for HK$265 and set out in search of a ticket to Hong Kong island (The airport is on a man-made island because space in Hong Kong is so valuable!). We found train tickets, which cost us HK$100 each, return. We tried to leave our hand luggage at the baggage counter, because they were full of books and stuff to save weight in our main luggage. Turns out it costs ... read more

The final destination of our great road trip was the Sodwana Bay Nature Reserve. Apart from being a stunningly beautiful dense forest, just off the coast lies a series of coral reefs which make the bay one of the world's top 5 dive sites. We had booked our dives with Coral Divers, a beautiful dive lodge in the National Park. Since the 3 of us were doing our dive course, we had an included tent accommodation . These were pretty decent army-style tents under a tin roof with proper mattresses inside. The cost of the same accommodation for the other 3 was R50 per day, but then you also have to pay R40 per day for park fees. Instead, the other 3 paid R45 p/d to camp in the park and then just pitched our well-used ... read more

Off we go

Our teaching course is done, and while we wait for our visas and work permits to be approved we decided to spend some time enjoying the beautiful country we're about to leave. And what better way than a road trip. So we packed Sandy (my 200 000km old Honda Ballade) with a tent, dive gear, 5 Stellenbosch students and food and our clothing for 12 days. Then we set off along the N2 from Cape Town up the South African coast. On Wed 10th January Jeanne-Mari, Yvette and myself (Darrell) squished our unreasonable amount or stuff into the boot and left the Cape to pick up Andries and George in Stilbaai. The two guys then added their contribution to the impossibly full boot and climbed in, pushing the shocks even closer to their maximum. By the ... read more

3 Days to go 'till we're teachers! After three and a half weeks of classes, homework, textbooks and all those things we left behind years ago, Cathy and I are once again getting used to the whole school thing. Except that this time we return to fight for the other side! The truth is that both of us have really enjoyed the TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course we've been doing. The course is run over 4 weeks (100 hrs) and during this time we've had the chance to prepare and teach 6 one-hour classes to foreign students. The students have been really great and we've met some fantastic people, some of whom we will hopefully be able to visit during our travels. Not an aweful lot has been happening because of the full-time ... read more

Let me introduce ourselves... My name is Darrell, a 22 year old South African, God-loving, kite-surfing, Capetonian. I've been Studying a B.Sc (Hons) in genetics at Stellenbosch University for the past year and enjoying the beautiful beaches and mountains of the Cape. Cathy is my Gorgeous (you don't have to take my word, you'll see plenty of photos) girlfriend who's grown up in Johannesburg. She has an incredible gift of compassion for everyone she meets and continually pours out her self into doing things excellently. She can be very tough to keep up with, but is always a lot of fun. We met in our final year of school and have spent wonderful holidays together and become best friends over the last few years. Cathy and I have both just written our fianal exams. That means ... read more
