Beautiful picture, beautiful blog
I would have loved to have left a comment on your blog but it's not allowing it! Wow! We both publish Maldives blogs at the exact same time. Yours I enjoyed because it was a completely different perspective than mine, but we came away the same. What a place eh? I love the Maldivians. Kokko sounds amazing I struggled to write about Male because it was such an assault on my senses after I spent so much time on a quiet peaceful boat. I just wanted to get out of there. Your blog made me reappreciate it, so thank you. Happy travels.

Maldives bliss
Thanks for your comment, Andrea. You also had quite a trip in the Maldives. Such a fascinating place—the wildlife, the people and their culture. I wanted to go because I know this is one of those places that will change drastically in coming years.

What a wonderful story!!!
I would be leery about talking with someone who was at an ATM with me. But you gave him a chance and it turned out great. And I liked that you cared for the dog and her pup. I hope you see them again next year.

Leery
Thanks, I think it was his smile, and I knew right away he was sincere. I tend to trust that everyone has a good heart. Thanks for your comment!

Gorgeous Zelda
I remember reading your blog last year when the pup with the head wound was rescued, so lovely to see that Zelda is still around to greet you with a happy face and that waggy tail. It never ceases to amaze me that the stray animals we meet on our travels are able to trust and show affection to random humans, regardless of their dire situations. Hope Zelda’s resilience continues to keeps her safe…

Zelda lives
Thanks Ren and Andrew. I didn’t name her until this year, thinking that I would never see her again. Her spirit is so pure and trusting.

Zelda
What a sweet story. I'm sure Zelda will be waiting for you when next you return - or maybe the man from Microsoft will adopt her. (One can always hope.)

Sweet Zelda
Thanks for the comment I think Zelda would be a good ambassador for street dogs. I really hope I’ll see her next year.

Blessing

Chance encounters
No such thing! I think we all meet people on our travels for a reason, whether we need them or we learn something from them. Oh and my heart breaks for you and Zelda. I had a little dog I named Ginger who followed me for 26kms just in case I'd give her another ginger nut biscuit. Her tenacity will help her survive. Leaving her behind was so hard but I think she'll be ok.

Zelda and Ginger
I very much agree. Nothing is by chance, and it is so apparent when traveling. You’ll never forget Ginger. Isn’t it something how we carry these encounters with us forever. Thanks for the comment.

Coconut
I was told that coconuts were often used as offerings in Hindu temples because they symbolized the condition of humans - no matter how rough and dirty the outside, the inside is pure and white. I don't know if that is true, but I like the idea.

Coconut Query
Hi, thanks for commenting. After receiving your question, I went on a quest about the use of coconuts in rituals. I went out to a village with a friend, where he asked a lot of people about the coconut offering practice. There didn’t seem to be a clear explanation. One comment was that coconuts are plentiful and also valued, and so are a natural offering at the temple. Another said it’s just always been done that way (!). Others said they didn’t know, another commented that it is important to make sure the coconut is broken open a certain way. It should be a clean break, rather than a crushing mess. This will assure that the person making the offering will have the best opportunity to resolve his/her problems. The messy break will just lead to more personal problems. I’m going to keep asking about coconut use in rituals. No one had anything to say about the symbolism of using a coconut.

Historic Buildings....
Very interesting blog. We always enjoy seeing the historic buildings during our travels, even if they are in ruins. With a little imagination, they always tell a story of the past which is often as interesting, or more, than the present day. Thanks!

History!
I agree! I can create all kinds of stories about these places. Thanks for your comment
