Nostalgia!
Your posts are reminding me so much of why I love Madurai. Always interesting. Always colorful in contrasting ways. Always a moment that touches the heart and mind. One day, I will return for an extended visit. The ducks and stars just need to line up. Enjoy! And, I may catch up with you via regular email soon, for background details not in the log or on Facebook.

Nostalgia Indeed
Sally, despite the crowds, the noise, the busy-ness, the chaos, the trash, all that, yes, Madurai pulls on you and somehow captures you. Everywhere, everyday, something new and something friendly happens. I've been fed tea in so many houses I'm swimming, and I love it, and now my soul is hooked..I wish you a triumphant return someday.--sooner, rather than later.

Beautiful Flowers
Don't you wish you could find a way to capture the smell and send that to us as well? I do!

The completed Rangoli

Rangoli Zen, indeed!
So many meaningful parts to the process--being present and allowing the design/life to evolve as a meditation, the creativity and variety of the thirty days of different rangolis, and then acknowledging the impermanence of the art work/life, not letting it just fade away, but choosing to let it go while still at its height of beauty. And then with such narrow walkways filled with mandalas, everyone would need to walk more mindfully in this month--a blessing to all.

Rangoli magic
Tara, all great observations. And here we are with a more western approach, analyzing, labeling, defining, and thinking about the process and product, and the women just do it and allow it to flow, letting it be the organic process that it is.

Rangoli!!
The colours in Suriya's Rangoli has spilled over into Terry's blog by making the article itself a colourful Rangoli..

Impermanence
The illusion of permanence in action. What a great lesson and great teachers. Thank you for sharing.

Creating the kolum with colored powder

Heart-to-heart magic!
So brilliant to find a neighborhood, even in a big city, where you can wander, experience daily lives and be welcomed to personal connections. Such a contrast to how travelers often characterize India as overwhelming. You've shown us a lovely alternative--thank you. And I love that the deity is a tree--a reverence for all life!

Easy connections
Thanks Tara. I'm so pleased with this area, and find myself being drawn into the details of their lives. Everything seems manageable...the trash, the poverty, the fumes, the crowds...amazing what personal connections with the people can do to your outlook on a place. Stay a while and really feel a place, I'll advise other travelers. A whole other dimension opens up.

Enjoying your travels again
You are so descriptive in your blog about the places you visit and the people you meet. I think you have an affinity for the people where you are. Thank you for sharing. Ann
13th December 2016

Yes to affinity
Thanks Ann for traveling with me and commenting. You are correct...I do feel a special connection with the people here, who have accepted me without hesitation. It is so easy to laugh with them.

Colorful and sweet
Hi Terry, What a wonderful way to start your trip. The family looks so sweet. So nice of them to be so open and kind to invite you to share food with them. I am glad you didn't see the sign. What an experience. Sacred.

Famous teacher
I also enjoyed watching the one-legged teacher in the mornings in Tao Dan Park. His name is Ta Anh Dung, and he is rather famous in Saigon. He spends much of his time teaching children, but teaches adults in the early morning and in the evening. I can imagine that none of his students would dare say "Teacher, that's too difficult!
