My tie? You like my tie?
I have understood that giving a compliment about an item a person possesses can make that person feel obligated to offer it as a gift. Wonder if that young student thought he needed to give his tie to the photographer! How to explain that one to Amma and Appa after school! Great outing. These are the types of adventures I love in India. Even though I wrote a thesis on "literature," I made sure it would include field work that could lead me on adventures. It surely did! You never know what will happen, and it generally comes out better than expected if you know the ropes.
