I was there too!!
So surprised I didn't see Bernie @ White Night [lol !!!!!!]. This was my first time and I was really surprised that, after all the build up, there was a distinct lack of light projections in the CBD. Even Flinders St stn was not included; it was just lit up as it normally is at night! It was quite an experience though walking down Swanston St with thousands of people and NO trams or other vehicles. One night of People Power! It was a long walk from Fed Sq to Exhibition Blg but well worth it to see the Aboriginal themed light projections bring our iconic blg to life. Then it was the long walk back thru the crowds to where I got a park opp Rod Laver Arena. Wasn't I lucky? I've put my photos & videos on fb if you feel like a squiz. Take care. Looking forward to travelling "with you" thru yr blog.

Great commentary.
Thanks for the update Tracey, glad you're back - so are the 'children' too I bet! Tom and I went to Patmos from Samos [where my daughter was living back in the late '80's] and visited here as well. Isn't the history just awesome? The Greek islands certainly are very scenic. When's yr next great adventure?? I'm currently planning a trip to Cambodia next April [with Heather, Vicky & Dorisi]; after which Vicky and I are travelling on to the Holy Land via India. I have such a strong feeling that if I don't see the Holy Land soon then maybe I'll never get there. The threat of IS is soooooo menacing and real. My daughter is not happy with my decision at all; she considers the area is far too risky to visit. I'm going regardless. C u soon perhaps? Would you like to join our walking group? - Thursday usually.

worth the effort
Looks like you were rewarded well for your exertions!

Hi Steven 'siglets'
I am full of envy, your cruise is taking you to some beautiful places in the Aegean. Of course all accolades to the photographer/s; great job. Love the photo of Steven's little family; I was wondering what had happened to him [lol]. Waiting eagerly for the next phase of this wonderful adventure. Caroline

Historical Knowledge
Hi Tracey and Bernie, It astounds me the mount of historical knowledge you two have in your heads! Hope your trip keeps going well. Love, Cheryl.

hardly snappers!
I can't imagine anyone describing you both as snappers rather than photographers, you go to much greater lengths than the average person to get your images, and are rewarded well for your efforts. Lovely pics, even the iphone one has come up well. I love the Whitby abbey photo, very atmospheric. No mention of Dracula in your blog, the Whitby folk love to play up that connection. We visited there with Jill and Trev, my aunty Ann and friend Kath in 2008 and made the same observation about that poor statue. They must clean it regularly otherwise it would be a lumpy encrusted mess by now! We were on our way to Durham to visit my cousin and family. I phoned him from that spot to make arrangements to stay that night because there were no vacancies anywhere in Whitby that night due to a festival. I had a very long conversation with a man who didn't deny being my cousin or express surprise to any of my conversation, before I realised it was a wrong number. The person just went along with everything I was saying, didn't even seem concerned that 6 people were coming to stay with him. How bizarre! Glad to hear that you have had a giant Yorkshire pudding. Too bad about the meat but as long as the yorkshire was good we wouldn't have cared. Our niece Kim can't wait to meet us over there and will be searching out Yorkshire puddings high and low throughout her visit.

love the light on the mount
Hi again. Love your images of the mount bathed in light, looks great. It is an amazing place (apart from the cafe) and we loved the aspect of taking a boat there. Would have to dig out my old diaries but I am fairly certain that we walked over the causeway and returned by boat. It is a long time ago, 1992, so the memory is a bit hazy. Wondering if you are heading to Lands End? If so, there is a wonderful open air theatre not far away at Porthcurno called The Minack Theatre. Not long before we went over there I saw an article in a National Geographic about the lady who built it and had to visit to see for myself. It is in a spectacular coastal location and if you are lucky enough there may even be a show on. We were lucky and saw 'The Comedy of Errors' Shakespeare's play. It was quite an experience. The audience brought their picnics along. luckily it was a balmy night. I can still imagine myself sitting on the stone seat, watching the show as the sun set over the water, it was magical. Wherever you go for the final part of your holiday, I hope you both continue to enjoy all of your experiences with no more of those travel frustrations that are all part of the journey. At least they give you some good stories!

Didn't quite make it as far as Land's End
We have been to Land's End before so didn't venture quite that far on this trip. You have told me about the outdoor theatre and it does sound like it would be beautiful ... English weather permitting!! It sounds like you were very lucky to be there on a balmy English evening. Goodness knows they are rare!! Because of my current obsession with Captain Cook this trip has been about getting to a few places that are connected with James and his voyages of discovery. We have been up to Yorkshire to visit Whitby, Marton-in-Cleveland and Great Ayton. Hopefully later today I will update the blog to include North Yorkshire. Love, Tracey.

St Michael's Mount

Happy Birthday, Bernie!
I hope you do make it out to St. Michael's Mount, which looks so like my beloved Le Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy; it would be a proper birthday present! How lovely to get a recommendation from your lunch staff that led you over the moors--another b'day present, I suppose. Love the ponies, lambs and postbridge. Happy travels in your new year!

St Michael's Mount

Mont St Michel is beautiful too!
Hi Tara, thank you for Bernie's birthday wishes. We caught the boat out to St Michael's Mount on the 25th and enjoyed our exploration of the castle and the amazing gardens. I think we visited Mont St Michel before we started blogging on this site. When we return home I'll have to try to remember to find our photos and post a couple here. Bernie's photos of Mont St Michel are pretty good ... even if I say so myself. We got up early and took some amazing early morning photos of the mont reflected in the tidal estuary. I looked up your blog the other day and you don't seem to have posted for a while. Are you still on your epic travels in South America or are you back in California at the moment? Cheers, Tracey.

that scam has been going on for years
Phil and I became aware of that car rental 'offer of upgrade' scam when every time we declined we found ourselves with the same car being offered without extra cost. Sneaky! Glad to see the weather is so nice. Hope it is like that when we arrive in a couple of weeks. Getting close now and we are really looking forward to it. The plans are all coming together, everything is booked and now I am already focused on packing!
31st May 2015

Enjoy the excitement of packing ...
... while it lasts because soon you will be sick of unpacking and re-packing! Although you have planned longer amounts of time in fewer places so won't have to re-pack too often. This is definitely the last Grand Tour that we do when we visit Europe. When Bernie is also retired we look forward to exploring fewer destinations in a bit more depth rather than the constant go, go, go of trying to pack so many different places into just eight weeks! Only 16 sleeps to go until your own o/s adventure with Jill. Love, Tracey.

Stonehenge
WOW ~ what a glorious, sunny day on the Salisbury Plains. You have been SO lucky with the weather. I was there September last year {after flying in to the UK on the tail end of a hurricane which drowned London and then followed us north to Scotland for over a week !!!} I didn't get one single photo with clear blue skies!! I guess that just means I'll have to re-visit and hope for good weather. So glad you are having such a good time. Caroline

The weather can be so fickle
We have certainly been enjoying a pretty good run of weather on this trip. The only really disappointing day that we had through Italy and France was the day that we went to Pisa so we consider ourselves lucky. Even though it is rather cold in England we have had some sun along the way. A bit of blue sky and sunshine is a bonus for holiday photography. I bought a card the other day that featured a 'Photo of the Year'. In a blurb on the back the photographer said that he planned the shot for a year and kept returning until all the elements that he wanted were in place!! It just goes to show that the really great photos don't just happen. Cheers, Tracey.

almost close encounter
I was surprised to see that our friends Andrea and Greg visited Monet's garden two days after you! How funny if you had crossed paths as fellow aussies. Missed by that much!

Tulip staircase, Queen's House

The ups and downs of travel
I love architecture and Inigo Jones, and this is a fabulous staircase!, and as a traveler, how thrilling to stand on the Prime Meridian! How fun to let your volunteer work at Cooks' Cottage help direct your exploration in England. Too bad the K1 watch and "The Quest for Longitude" (how delicious) weren't there for your visit, but how lovely that you caught some Cookisms in the Art Gallery. Hope your weather luck holds.

26th May 2015

And hello to Greenwich
Sounds like quite the debacle, thank goodness for contingency timing! We tend to do the same given the sort of hurdles presented when travelling. We have had horrible experiences returning hire cars in non english countries at time critical moments, hence our preference to travel by trains and only hire cars for one or two days at various locations. But of course pubic transport can present its own set of problems as you have found. At least in England you will be able to ask and (hopefully) understand the response. I am keenly following your Greenwich experience given Jill and I are staying there in an apartment near Cutty Sark for 12 nights. We are really looking forward to having an extended stay in London. I can still only cope with a small dose of activity in one day so we will be able to take in the sights and experiences in a leisurely manner. So any hints will be welcomed. Scotch College in Melbourne has a library with an amazing collection of australian books and artifacts. I visited one time with the curator who was a friend in Toastmasters, Dick Briggs. He showed us some amazing items including some items from Cooks voyages and also a journal belonging to Matthew Flinders. Added to that some original Gould books with the most amazing bird illustrations and a copy of the original Ned Kelly court transcripts. I am not sure whether it is ever opened to the public but am wondering if people with a special interest in such issues may be given access. Just a thought that it may be worth contacting them on your return in case you are able to visit. Looking forward to further blogs as you continue on your way. Enjoying the armchair ride with you both. love Janet xx

A-MAY-ZING
A-MAY-ZING photos/places/food/accommodation. What an A-MAY-ZING holiday! It sure pays to spend the time to properly research places before you go o/s. Lucky Traberns. BUT where's Steven???

You need a 'drone'.
Met a guy on Frankston beach yesterday who was playing with his 'drone'. Turns out he is a professional photographer who also takes aerial photos of properties for real estate agents. His aerial photos of the peninsula were AMAZING. The drone can be operated for up to 3 kms and goes very high to take those amazing photos. Bernie you'll just have to get one BUT I'm not sure you'd be able to take it with you o/s. Great 'boy's toy' - and I could even see myself having lots of fun with it! For instance, instead of 'invading' the vineyard you could have just sent the drone aloft to get the photos for you - no hassle!! But 'sans' drone Bernie you photos are really wonderful; and so sharp. I think you're getting better and better as a photographer every time you go away. Keep up the wonderful photos and dialogue. I love bridges too.
I do love taking bridge shots and most do look amazingly more romantic lit up at night. Great shots thanks to your perseverance. You're doing a great job 'blogging' Tracey. Cheers. Caroline
