Rob writes We got the bus to Cordoba the next morning at 9:15, which was supposed to take about 10 hours. We ended up getting into Cordoba at about 22:00, a lot later then we were expecting. I wasn’t too keen on walking through an unknown town trying to find the hostel at this hour but we made it without incident. On arrival we learnt from the hostel that the room (£23) had been double booked so rather than having a double bed we had to settle for two single beds. We didn’t come off to badly though as the hostel discounted the price for the inconvenience. Breakfast here was a bit pants unfortunately, but this seems to be common over Argentina where sweet pastries and cakes seem to be the norm in the morning. It ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires September 15th 2011

Tina Writes It’s a biggie. Before our long bus journey at 3pm, we decided to go to the three frontiers. A place where you can see Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina at the same time. They are marked by an obelisk, painted in their flag colours. It was kinda cool. We got our bus and it was pretty fancy with big seats that went back really far, for what we hoped would give us a good sleep. There was a Scottish guy in the seat behind us (Rob thought he was American, he really can’t place accents) which meant I wasn’t able to talk freely in the way I have become accustomed to. You see, most people don’t speak English and even if they do, they certainly don’t understand my common- as-muck, Glaswegian slang. So that is ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú September 10th 2011

Rob Writes: We weren’t quite at Argentina yet, we still had to visit the Brazilian side of the Iguaçu Falls. After the 21 hours on a bus the plan was to head to the hostel where we would leave our bags and head to the falls. Only problem was, we didn’t actually know where the hostel was. Fortunately there was a McDonalds nearby where we could fire up the net-book and take advantage of the free wifi. It also turned out we took advantage of the new boy serving us who gave us two free burgers. I was due to pay R$9 for my burgers, gave the boy R$100 note and he gave me R$101 change! Obviously I never noticed his mistake until it was way too late to go back do the honest thing. Shame. ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Paraty September 8th 2011

Tina writes During the night, Rob woke up at about 5am and jumped out of bed. It was still dark outside, so I thought he was sleep walking til he started shouting ‘oh shit, the wind has blown all our clothes away’. We had put the wet clothes on the banister railing of the balcony to dry but nothing holding them down. I nearly died cause most of my clothes were out there, clothes that had taken me months to pick for this trip (not for how they look, but more for practicality). We quickly got dressed and went out to run after our stuff. Luckily, all of it had blown onto the corridor, so we calmed down and got the washing line out and attached them to that instead. I was now pleased about the ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Ilha Grande September 5th 2011

Rob Writes Before we could set off for Ilha Grande we had a few things to do. Firstly, bring the washing in. Not something I enjoy doing at home but it was made worse by the fact I had to hang out of a window to reach our clothes, which weren’t even dry! So again we went down to the hostel kitchen and stuffed our faces with all you can eat breakfast while waiting for our transfer to Ilha Grande (£28). The transfer was by a small van, which wasn’t too bad really. Air con and leather seats are more than we were used to. We were then taken to a small town where we would then have to catch a boat, which was a bigger pain in the arse than it should have been. The ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro September 3rd 2011

Tina Writes After a sleepless night we got up and ready for the day. The hostel provides breakfast as part of the stay, so we filled our boots and headed out. We took a stroll down to Copacabana Beach. It is a pretty impressive beach. All along the beach are frame like structures for exercising on and a lot of the locals did just that, some of them all buff too. They really like to keep fit here. We came across what looked like a children’s park but is actually an exercise park for everyone to use, with permanent structures such as a cross trainer but made out of the stuff you see in kids play parks. We decided to go to Sugar Loaf Mountain and walked to the end of Copacabana Beach as it looked ... read more

Rob Writes Trying to piece together the last few days has been difficult due to the sheer amount we have done. I wasn’t sure where to start writing from and what to write about, but I’m going to go back to when I actually felt this trip was ‘happening’. In my head it all started when I turned off my Xbox at about midnight on the 31th of August. Tina and I had to tear the house to pieces and box it up, in order to take it to Tina’s mums the next day. Playing Black Ops until midnight wasn’t a good idea. We were still dealing with the house at about 3:30am, at which point we threw in the towel and went to bed. We were up at about 8am, boxed up the last few ... read more

Tina writes Seeing the world has always been my dream in life but a dream I thought was unachievable and only for the rich. In 2004 I accidently came across a travel blog. This blog inspired me, I didn’t really know that kind of travel was possible or as simple. However, money was still an issue and I never really thought I would ever have the kind of money needed to do such a trip. In 2009, I started a new job and I discovered one of my colleagues had done a gap year and I realised from then that all I had to do was start saving. And that’s what I did. It took 2 years and Rob’s redundancy, but here we are and ready to go! Over the past 2 years I have researched ... read more
