Rob Writes We were up at 5:20am. This would usually be way too early for my liking but excitement had got the better of me and was wide awake. It was a cold morning so we had to wrap up warm before heading downstairs to wait for the trek company to pick us up. We weren’t waiting long, maybe twenty minutes or so and we were soon in a bus with about a dozen other people, heading for Ollantaytambo where we were due breakfast. The bus ride seemed to take forever partly because I was keen to get stuck into the Inca Trail, Tina on the other hand was quite nervous. We arrived in Ollantaytambo at about 9am, the bus taking about three hours or so. Although we weren’t sure at the time, it turned out ... read more

Tina Writes The hostel didn’t have a ‘matrimonial’ room so we had to take a twin room for the first night. It was a bit of a dive and I wasn’t very happy. Rob was quite content, I think he is cut out for this more than me. We headed out and found a set menu for £1.16 each. We then headed to the main square, the Plaza de Armas and it was stunning. It’s such a pretty city (in the centre). Surrounded by huge old churches and cathedrals, a beautiful fountain in the centre, all lit perfectly. It’s also very touristy. We were offered Alpaca hats and jumpers, paintings and massages as we walked down the street constantly. Most people come here to do the Inca trail or some sort of trek, so massages are ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Puno October 17th 2011

Tina Writes We were expecting prices to shoot up as soon as we entered Peru but were pleasantly surprised when we got a hostel for S40 (£9) per night. I say hostel but this was a lot more like a hotel room. It was decent enough and even had an Ethernet connection to the net, so we had a really good connection. It did get very cold in the room and I had to have a hot shower to heat up before I went to bed. It was the best shower I have had in South America, with actual hot water. It was difficult to get out. There had been some sort of concert and parade going on in the square nearby all day and when the parade passed our hotel it was rather noisy so ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Copacabana October 15th 2011

Rob Writes Once we had arrived in La Paz we just wanted to get to our hostel but we still had to find it. The air was thin and our bags were heavy (the ones under our eyes) and we were hungry, which made the trek to the hostel even more demanding on us. We found it eventually and it was a nice enough place so we got settled in. We soon headed straight out in search of food and found a nice (cheap) place just around the corner where we each had a set menu meal for 15Bs (£1.50). The menu consisted of a soup starter, a main featuring a meat of your choice, rice and vegetables, and a desert of which seemed to be whipped cream with a strawberry. Couldn’t go wrong for £1.50 ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Santa Cruz Department » Samaipata October 12th 2011

Tina Writes The taxi ride was ok but my arse was killing me by the time we got there as my seat was in the middle of the two back seats. When we got to the town of Samaipata, the driver didn’t know where our hostel was, so he and the other passengers all talked between themselves and asked passersby. We finally found it and quickly discovered it was the best hostel we had stayed in so far. We had also booked the best room they have, a little more expensive than most but at $140Bs (£13) a night it was really nice. La Posada del Sol is set in lovely landscaped gardens, the owners, an American from Texas and a Bolivian. So English was spoken fluently, making things so much easier and we feel less ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre October 7th 2011

Rob Writes Taking a taxi to Sucre wasn’t as easy as we thought, purely because we cannot speak Spanish. We knew a couple who stayed at the same hostel as us in Potosi had managed to get a taxi to Sucre for $100Bs (£10) but when we arrived at the taxi rank and proposed this price the taxi drivers practically laughed in our faces, wanting a total of $160Bs. After about ten minutes of not understanding one another we gave up and headed to the bus terminal. Two minutes into our walk and along came a taxi, screeching up next to us asking if we were heading for Sucre and that he could do it for $100Bs, or at least we thought he said that. We hesitantly got in. The driver then headed back to the ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi October 3rd 2011

Tina Writes The bus journey to Potosi was 5 hours long. The bus stank, was covered in litter and the windows didn’t close properly so it was a tad cold at 4000m. The roads were not as bad as I had come to believe, I think Bolivia have done a lot of work on their roads in the last year or so. Some idiot played music out his phone for most of the journey but thankfully that was drowned out by the rattling of the windows. The bus stopped for a toilet break half way through at the side of the road. Pull down your troosers and pee basically. We stayed on the bus! We arrived to a flurry of taxi drivers vying for business. As it was midnight we would be giving them some. We ... read more

Tina Writes Day three was kicked off in a similar style to previous days, bump starting the Land Cruiser at 6am, and off we went. More weird rock formations, lagoons and flamingos filled the morning before the tail-gate buffet on a salty plain. We were back in the bad seats. The back of the Land Cruiser had no leg room so became rather uncomfortable after a while, even for me with my wee Meccy legs. Poor Rob. It also meant each time we stopped we had to clamber out over the seats in front which had been pulled down. It was ok though. While driving through one of the slat flats we noticed a train in the distance coming toward us. Then we could make out the track which was literally in the middle of nowhere, ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Tupiza September 29th 2011

Rob Writes We made it to La Quiaca at the Argentina/Bolivia boarder at about 7am and it was damn cold. Although we had read the boarder was only a fifteen minute walk away we hailed a cab anyway, which cost us about eight pesos, or just over a pound, for three of us I might add. To be on the safe side we hooked up with four other travellers going the same way as us and shared two cabs. We were much calmer about crossing this border seeing as it was no longer our first and knew what to expect, but kept wary of the scammers we had heard about who apparently like to hang around border crossings. I think it was too early/cold for them though because we were the only ones there almost. So ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta September 23rd 2011

Tina Writes First night in Salta we had a wee look around the main square, which was very pretty. They are very good at lighting up their buildings here. We had to eat and as there is no sign of a supermarket anywhere and with cheap steak to be had, that is what we did. We are not doing well with the backpacker budget so far, but there is very little in the way of cheap, easy to cook, food. So we both ordered steak with a side. I ordered papas a la crème, which I guessed was potatoes in cream and Rob ordered something which he thought was some kind veg but it turned out to be apple sauce! I also ordered my usual coke and it came in a 1 litre GLASS bottle. You ... read more
