I had been here several times taking tours to the areas top attractions. This included the Golden Circle with stops at Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerid Crater; the Blue Lagoon, Skogafoss, Eyjafjallajokull Visitor Centre, Seljalandsfoss and Viking World. In Rekjavik we had toured the amazing Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre and visited the local market. If you only have one day here, you should take the Golden Circle tour. Pat and i decided to take the shuttle bus to the conference center and walk about the city on our own visiting the shopping streets and climb the hill to the famous Hallgrimskirkja (church). On the way to the church we passed by the Stjórnarráðið, the location of the prime minister's office and the headquarters of the Icelandic Government. It was originally built ... read more

Invergordon is a town and port in Easter Ross, in Ross and Cromarty, Highland, Scotland. I docked here last August aboard Holland America's Koningsdam. It was a relatively long walk from the ship to the end of the pier. Pat and I had an included Travel Leader's Distinctive Voyages tour at this port. We explored the "Black Isle"which is actually a peninsula. It si thought that the name originates from the fact that the soil is very dark in color or from the Gaelic word for black, dubh. The peninsula is an area of rolling farmland and pretty villages. We viewed hundreds of waterfowl as we drove along the Cromarty Firth on our way to Cromarty. The highlight of the day was our visit to the ancient village of Cromarty. The town has many preserved Georgian ... read more

I had the fortune to be able to attend the Edinburgh Tattoo last August when our ship, the Koningsdam was anchored in the Firth of Forth. It turned out to be a mild evening, for Scotland, with clear skies. The tattoo is performed under the majestic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Traditionally the tattoo was the signal given by drumbeat that warned tavern owners to shut down and British soldiers to return to their quarters for the night. The custom developed into a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands after sunset. I was also fortunate that this performance was chosen for the making of the 2016 DVD which I was able to purchase online. The tour bus had to drop us off about 1/2 mile away for an uphill walk on cobblestone streets. We also ... read more

South Queensferry located on the Firth of Forth is the closest harbor for cruise ships visiting Edinburgh. Most have to anchor out and tender their passengers onto shore. Pat and I tendered in twice that day. That morning we visited the Falkirk Wheel and the Antonine Wall built by the Romans in 142 AD. The wall is the northernmost frontier monument of the Roman Empire. The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The lift is named after the nearby town of Falkirk. It was designed to replace a series of lock gates built in the 19th century. The Falkirk Wheel replaces a series of eleven locks which lifted (or dropped) boats from a height of 80 feet. These used to take several hours or the ... read more

I visited the Heritage Coast of Northumberland when our ship, the new Koningsdam docked in Newcastle upon Tyne, England last August. I had opted to hire a private car and driver to take us to visit as much as possible in the time allotted. This strip of coast contains England’s greatest sequence of coastal castles. We had time to visit two of the best, Bamburgh Castle and Alnwick Garden and Castle. We also made photo stops at Warkworth Castle and Tynemouth. If you only have time to visit one castle, massive Bamburgh Castle is the one to see. You can wander through 14 magnificent public rooms and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Northumberland coast from atop a volcanic outcrop, 150 feet above sea level. Alnwick Castle has been home and still is to the Dukes ... read more

Notes is a whiskey-tasting bar, located between the Explorer's Bar and B.B. King's Blues Club. It has 129 different whiskeys on offer and a very knowledgeable whiskey "sommelier" that will suggest a blend that might suit you. There are also various herbs and spices, used to enhance your smell, as well as some rarities, including bottles for $6,000, should you feel so inclined. The Explore's Bar behind the Lincoln Center Stage is a pleasant spot to listen to the recitals if you can't get a seat near the stage. The Ocean Bar is located off the atrium on deck two on the way to several restaurant options and is a relatively quiet area to enjoy a pre-dinner drink with friends. Next door is Blends where wine connoisseurs and novices alike can experience a unique, hands-on wine ... read more

There is a large variety of entertainment on Koningsdam but the emphasis is on music. It is definitely a ship for music lovers. Koningsdam features a music walk with BB Kings All-Stars, Billboard Onstage and Lincoln Center. Pat and I always enjoy the BB Kings All-Stars Band. They play Blues and Jazz but also play Doo-Wop, Classic Rock and Pop tunes. It is located in the Queens room midship which has a large dance floor. Billboard Onboard showcases the talents of live musicians – including two singing pianists, a guitarist and a DJ. They take turns rocking the crowd with chart-topping hits. Lincoln Center Stage is another popular venue and features a pianist and a string quartet that plays favorite classical pieces and chamber music. Get there early for a good seat. The entrances to the ... read more

As I wanted to experience all the dining options we only ate three times in the main dining room. It is open for breakfast and dinner each day and is open for lunch on sea days. The menus are very diverse and include a selection of starters, soups, salads, main courses, and desserts. We had an excellent lunch and two dinners there. Pat was impressed how good and perfectly cooked the salmon entrees were. Our favorite optional or alternative restaurant was Tamarind which is now $25. The service and food made this very worthwhile. We ended up eating here three times! I could have made a meal just from the appetizers: pot stickers, spring rolls, baby-backed pork ribs, satay and shrimp tempura. The Pinnacle Grill featuring dishes from the Pacific Northwest is always reliable, now $35. ... read more

Pat and I boarded the Koningsdam at the port of Amsterdam after spending 5 nights at the Movenick Hotel, conveniently located less than 100 meters from where we dropped our bags off for the cruise. Boarding at 12:30pm we admired the decor and beauty of the new addition to Holland America's fleet of ships. After dropping off our carry-on luggage we proceeded to the main dining room for lunch. The decor and layout reminded me of the beautiful dining rooms on the Celebrity Solstice Class of ship. It even had a glass wine tower at the back! We both ordered the salmon filet, cooked to order and very tasty. After lunch we proceeded to take at our of the ship starting on deck 12 at the Explorations Cafe located next to the Crow's Nest observation lounge. ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Monnickendam December 1st 2016

Prior to flying to Amsterdam I had booked a full day tour with "That Dam Guide" visiting the area just north of Amsterdam. It is an area of dijks (dikes), windmollen (windmills) and kaas (cheese). Our first stop was Ransdorp on the polders on the outskirts of Amsterdam. Polders are land reclaimed from the sea. The Dutch waged a centuries-long battle with nature to win this land back from the sea, and boy was it worth it. The landscape that inspired many famous Dutch painters is spectacular. We than visited the charming fishing village of Monnickendam and walked the history-lined streets. I could have spent all day here exploring the town and taking advantage of all the photo opportunities. We stopped off for coffee and Dutch apple pie at a historic orphanage, which is now a ... read more
