Pat and I boarded the Regent Seven Seas Explorer at Civitavecchia at approximately 3pm. We had very little wait and were onboard in less than 20 minutes. The ship was scheduled to depart at 5pm. The Explorer is the most elegant ship that I have been on. This included the atrium with its huge Swarovski crystal chandelier that hangs over a double gold staircase that surrounds it. and the main restaurant, Compass Rose, with its magnificent Murano blue chandeliers. Another highlight is the three-ton Tibetan-style prayer wheel at the entrance to the Pacific Rim restaurant that is so heavy the deck had to be reinforced with extra steel. The Explorer is like a floating museum of all things beautiful. Art lovers can spot original works by Picasso, Chagall, and other masters. The room sizes range from ... read more

We were picked up at the apartment right on time,10am by our driver, Francesco for our visit to Viterbo on our way to Civitavecchia and the Regent Seven Seas Explorer. He was a courteous and careful driver and it was a pleasant trip through the countryside. It took longer than I anticipated reaching Viterbo, arriving at noon. We had to settle for a view of the city from the park like area from where you made the 45-minute walk to the city. We also grabbed a quick lunch at the small restaurant located there. We had originally planned to have a more leisurely meal in the medieval city of Viterbo. The area around Viterbo was the center of the Etruscan civilization. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Viterbo attained real importance. While the city of Rome ... read more

I looked forward to revisiting the Pantheon as I could not remember much about it from my visit in 2002 except its high unadorned dome. The Pantheon is ancient Rome's best preserved monument. The Pantheon is a former Roman temple, now a church, in Rome, Italy, on the site of two previous temples both destroyed by fire. It was completed in the year 125 when Hadrian was emperor. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. The height to the oculus (the opening in the dome) and the diameter of the interior circle are the same, 142 feet. It is actually larger than the dome of St. Peter's basilica. Among the notable people buried at Rome's Pantheon are painters Raphael and Annibale Carracci, composer Arcangelo ... read more

We stumbled across this church on the way to Campo de' Fiori to search out a spot for lunch. It has an innocuous entrance and is located on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the busiest thoroughfares in Rome. It is easy to pass it by but the interior with its elaborate Baroque interior is jaw dropping. Gold leaf and ornate carved angels and molding abound. The sun shines through the high large window making the whole place golden. A soaring, frescoed dome tops this imposing 17th-century church. It is the second highest dome in Rome after St. Peter's. One of the highlights is the second chapel on the right, the Strozzi family chapel thought to be designed by Michelangelo A visit here is a must for opera fans. Giacomo Puccini set the first act of ... read more

The forums are a vast and impressive array of ruins consisting of temples, government buildings and squares that can be very confusing. It is best understood if you take it in sections and read the information signs at the street level overlooking the various areas. The main one is the Roman Forum. If you buy a ticket to The Colosseum, you also have free entry to The Forum. The tickets can be bought online to avoid the lines. The main entrance gate for the Roman Forum is along the Via dei Fori Imperiali between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia. The lines are usually shorter at the Palatine off Via di San Gregorio. I took a guided tour 15 years ago which helps you understand the confusing array of ruins. This is highly recommended for the first ... read more

I booked this tour primarily to see the catacombs but was surprised how much I enjoyed the other sights on this tour. The Catacombs of St. Domitilla are the best preserved and one of the most extensive of all the catacombs. They are located underneath the Appian Way in the countryside outside of Rome. This catacomb is also unique in that it has a subterranean 4th century Basilica of St Nereus and St Achilleus. It involves several levels of stair climbing and is not recommended for those with any mobility problems. The catacombs are extremely vast, more than 10 miles in length and extending to a depth of around 120 feet. There are four levels and our visit dealt with just a portion of the second level with all its interesting artifacts. Our visit gave us ... read more

One of the top museum attractions in Rome is the Borghese Gallery which is housed in the Borghese Villa built in 1614. The extraordinary collection of Cardinal Borghese's art is renowned all over Europe. The museum houses an important collection of works by Bernini, Raphael, Caravaggio and Canova, whose Victorious Venus (1805), internationally known as Paolina Bonaparte, is the most famous piece in the museum and virtually its symbol. The entrance fee is Euro 21 or 29.50 for a guided group tour of 90 minutes. I booked a guided small group tour through Viator for $40 which lasted over 2 hours. I highly recommend the guided tour as Pat and I were told and shown highlights that we would have missed. No ticket is needed for the gardens that surround the villa as they are open ... read more

I booked this tour prior to arriving in Rome. It turned out to be the highlight of our Rome visit. We visited and ate our way through the Jewish Quarter and the Campo de Fiori area of Rome. We met at Osteria Osteria Pane Vino e San Daniele located near the Turtle Fountain at Piazza Mattei. We sampled a red and white wine with an imposing array of antipasto. Leaving the Osteria we walked into the heart of the Jewish Quarter stopping at Ristorante ll Portico to sample some traditional fried artichokes. As we walked through the old Jewish Quarter Marta pointed out brass markers embedded in the cobblestone street commemorating victims of the Holocaust that had lived in that building. Each plaque is detailed with the victim’s first and last name, date of birth, date ... read more

I flew into Rome last November for a 7-day stay prior to our boarding the new Regent Seven Seas Explorer for our 16-night Transatlantic Voyage back to Miami. We had rented a very nice 2-bedroom 2-bath apartment located on the Tiber River. Our room faced the back overlooking dead-end street. It was not much of a view but it was much quieter than the river view side as there was a busy street between the building and the river. The apartment was convenient to the Vatican, Piazza Navona Piazza and the Spanish Steps among others. We only spent about 150 Euro per night for these roomy accommodations. Since there was just two of us it was nice having his and hers bathrooms right next door to each other. The apartment was not ready yet as we ... read more

Europe » Iceland » Northwest » Ísafjördur February 9th 2017

It was a very foggy morning and I could barely see the shoreline from our veranda on the anchored Holland America's Koningsdam. We took the Dynjandi Waterfall and Westfjords excursion that i had booked through Wild Westfjords and it turned out to be one of our most scenic tours. As we left Ísafjörður the fog disappated and the scenery on the way to the falls was spectacular. We had almost an hour at the falls so there was time to climb all the way to the top. As it was quite slippery I only climbed about half way up so that I could get a full picture of the top fall. The full walk can take as much as 90 minutes roundtrip. Dynjandi is one of Iceland’s most impressive & majestic waterfalls, and one of the ... read more
