After a wonderful luncheon experience in Sveti Petar our coach dropped us off near the arena in Pula. The Pula Arena is the name of the amphitheater located in Pula. The Arena is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre to have four side towers and with all three Roman architectural orders entirely preserved. It was constructed between 27 BC and 68 AD and is among the six largest of the 200 surviving Roman arenas in the World. The Arena, was designed to host gladiatorial contests, with seating for up to 23,000 spectators. You can also tour the chambers below the arena where the gladiators and animals were held. It now houses an exhibition of olive oil and wine production in ancient times. Pula is also home to a number of other Roman ruins, including the Temple of ... read more

Bryce Canyon is one of our favorite National Parks. Hiking among the Hoodoos is pretty amazing. Erosion has shaped colorful sandstones and mudstones into thousands of spires, fins, pinnacles and mazes. The Hoodoos are rock columns topped by an overhanging hat of hard rock that take on strange human-like form. The walk down into the hoodoos was fairly easy but the walk back up was a little more difficult. Bryce is a photographers’ dream with its vivid red colors. Did you know that Bryce Canyon is actually not a canyon? It is a spectacular series of more than a dozen amphitheaters, each of which is carved at least 1,000 feet into the chromatic limestone. Pat enjoyed feeding the Uinta Chipmunks when we visited there in 1980. We have since learned it is dangerous to both the ... read more

After a wonderful morning touring and exploring Rovinj, our coach took us through the hilly countryside of Istria to the small village of Sveti Petar u Sumi. I did not expect such a warm welcome and all the entertainment. The staff was outfitted in traditional costumes, played traditional instruments and danced traditional dances. They even encouraged a few brave souls to join in. The food and wine were excellent and the chef received enthusiastic applause at the conclusion. We also had a very nice send off with more music and dancing. We then proceeded by coach back to Pula to see the Roman arena. Sveti Petar u Šumi got its name after the Benedictine monastery which was established in the 12th century. There were no houses around either the church or the monastery. The inhabitants lived ... read more

The entrance to the park was only a 10 minute drive from our motel in Moab. I hiked the easy 2.1 mile Windows Loop where we saw two of the largest windows in the park, the North and South Window, and the Turret Arch. I was also able to see the Double Arch and Skyline Arch on the scenic drive through the park which contains more than 1,500 recognizable arches arches. The road is designed to bring visitors close to park attractions, so it is easy to have a memorable experience in just a few hours of touring. Our visit was shorter than we would have liked. There was an approaching storm and we still had a 3 hour drive to Mesa Verde National Park which we planned to visit that afternoon.... read more

Europe » Croatia » Istria » Rovinj August 25th 2016

We docked in Pula, Croatia on a very hazy morning. I had opted for an all-day tour visiting Rovinj and Sveti Petar where we were entertained, wined and dined. This was followed by a walking tour of the ancient Roman arena in Pula. Our coach let us off at the harbor of Rovinj. As we approached the town I could see a large bell tower on top of the hill dominating the town. We passed an open air market displaying local delicacies including the famous Istrian Truffles or Tartufi. We then wandered through the cobblestone streets heading steadily uphill toward the bell tower. The tower and the Church of St. Euphemia appeared as we neared the crest. The church was rebuilt in the early 1700's. The bell-tower was built 70 years earlier and designed like the ... read more

It was getting late in the day when we arrived at Canyonlands after our visit to Capitol Reef National Park. We only had time to stop at some overlooks and take a walk to Mesa Arch. The trail is a relatively easy 1/2 mile loop that leads to Mesa Arch. It is one of the most scenic and accessible natural stone arches in the park. Canyonlands National Park, established in 1964, preserves 527 square miles of colorful landscape that has eroded into countless canyons, mesas, arches and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. It is the largest park in Utah. The Colorado and Green rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze and the rivers themselves. The easiest way to see the park is with a ... read more

The Seabourn Spirit docked a the New Port in Zadar, Croatia. I had opted for an all-day tour, visiting Krka Park, Gulini where we ate lunch, and a walking tour of the old city of Zadar. Krka Park is about a 70 minute drive southeast from Zadar. The top attraction of the Park are its magnificent waterfalls, including the famous Skradinski Buk falls which are one of Croatia’s most famous sights. The spectacular Skradinski Buk waterfalls are a collection of 17 waterfalls with a drop of 52 feet and length of about half a mile. Overall the park falls drop 1,247 feet in 3 tiers. The park is home to over 200 different bird species and18 different species of bat. Unlike the Plitvice Lakes National Park, it is possible to swim in places in the Krka ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama August 15th 2016

August 15, 2014 marked 100 years since the opening of the Panama Canal, which is undergoing the latest in a series of improvements. The canal operates normally as work continues on building a new, wider set of locks which are due to open next spring. Cargo ships and cruise ships continue to move smoothly through the locks and canal every day. It is one of the world’s largest and most complex engineering projects. It was built so ships could travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific without taking the long and often dangerous route around the southern tip of South America. The canal is impressive in itself. Some cruise lines equip their ships with experts who provide a running commentary while the ship is in the canal. They tell the inspiring and sometimes tragic story of ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Capitol Reef August 12th 2016

Capitol Reef is one of the lesser known and least visited parks in Utah. There are so many hikes, Capitol Reef's webpage features 10 hiking guides, each for different sections of the park. We opted to take the Hickman Bridge hike. It is the most-popular hike in Capitol Reef, and for good reason. At just 2-miles round-trip, the hike is easy enough for kids. But the view of a 133-foot natural bridge offers a fine reward for every hiker. The trail itself is fun, too, and includes a walk along the Fremont River. This was all we had time for as we still planned to visit Canyonlands National Park and then drive to Moab where we would overnight and visit Arches National Park. Utah, so many parks and so little time. We must return.... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Zadar August 11th 2016

Zadar is an ancient Mediterranean port city. The old town, surrounded by walls and towers on a peninsula, with a new, urban part is connected by a bridge, a symbol of the city. The old town is abounds with archaeological sites and monuments of the Roman, Medieval and Renaissance periods. It also has the first Sea Organ, which was located just down from Seabourn Spirit's docking location. We took a walking tour of the old town after our visit to Krka National Park that morning. Upon his visit Alfred Hitchcock said: “Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West, Florida.” I do not know if that is true, but I saw some really beautiful sunsets on our Adriatic cruise. Enjoy the Mediterranean cuisine, the excellent Croatian wines, ... read more
