Happy Friday! Day 2 of our vacation. First of all, I would like to tell everyone that we were REALLY tired last night, and did not spell check or reread our post before posting .... looking at it this morning, you really had to hang in there to figure it out.. The good news is that we are not so tired tonight, so this should be a better effort. Before I start about today, I wanted to tell you about the hotel we are staying at. It is about a half block off the main square in Roubaix and is an older hotel. The rooms are small but comfortable, and best of all we have figured out how to work everything. Today was a race day. The E3 Harkelbeke begins and ends in (you guessed it) ... read more

Hello everybody! Today was our first day in Belgium. We arrived after an overnight flight this morning at about 7 am And decided that since we were already in Brussels, we should travel to Bastogne to visit the Battle of the Bulge museum. So we fired up our Garmin, set it to kilometers, braced oushelves for the roundabout roulette game and off we went. It turned out to be about an hour and a half from Brussels and was a nice drive. Bastogne is a town of narrow winding streets, roundabouts, one way streets, cobblestones and hills. Garmin had to favorite phrases ... Entree roundabout and recalculating. We found the museum, circled it a couple of times and parked. It turned othere reserve were two museums in that building -- one was the WW II museum ... read more

Our last touring day in the Cotswolds. A pretty part of the country with the highest peak in England. On a clear day - like yesterday - they say you can see all the way to Wales. We could see pretty far, not sure what Wales looks like though. There are many small towns in the Cotswolds, and we chose to go to Winchcombe - mainly because it was close to a train station and also had Sudeley Castle there. in the end, we decided not to tour thecastle and instead we thought we would stroll around town. The strolling proved to be a little difficult ... You had to walk single fion the thebarrow sidewalks, and there seemed to be a lot of weekend traffic that kept whizzing by. And it was very warm yesterday ... read more

Today was the day we went to Chester. Mom had been told by some of the folks we talked to on the canals that we should go there, and they were right. A very interesting city with history that went back to something like 600AD. We took one official tour - in a cool double decker bus with a narrator who was hard to understand and only provided the most basic description of the sights. She also kept directing us to look to the right and left, and as you all probably know, Mom and I definitely have the left right problem, so we spent the entire tour trying to figure out right and left. Later on, when we were on our own in town, we ran into another guide who took us on a quick ... read more

We turned our boat in this morning after a breakfast feast that consisted of anything and everything we had left to eat on the boat. This is similar to what we could.d have had last night called ... Bubble and squeak. The pub we started out at had that listed on several entrees, but none of us were brave enough to try it. Andy looked it up this morning and found out that bubble and squeak was vegetable leftovers. So we thought that was what we had for breakfast this morning. Gavin, the guide who initially met us and told us about the boat was our guide back into the marina. After we told him all of the things that we had done to his boat ... The ramming of the bank, the ripping off of ... read more

Today was our last full day on the canals. We had intended to go visit the National War Memorial on our way out on the canals, but couLdn't, so we planned to visit it on our way back. Just outside the town of Alwares, the memorial is pretty spot of memorials, trees and flowers. The memorials are mostly focused onWW II and beyond, and it was surprising to see how many places Britain has been involved in in over the course of history and even since the time from the Second world war. There were memorials to the artillery, engineers, adjutant generals corps and to conflicts from the Korean War to the Northern Ireland conflict. A very pleasant morning remembering the servicemen and women and the civil servants who so faithfully served. Back to the boats ... read more

Today we did 10 locks and moved closer back to the marina. I took the day off to stay out of the pollen and other allergy causing events. Andy and mom did the locks and ran the locks. Mom was a little startled when someone commented that she looked Christmas Crackered - which is Cockney Rhyming Slang for Knackered and means tired. After 10 locks, I would be tired too. Mom even tried driving a little to spell Dave some ... But she didn't really take to it and went back to doing locks. She also ran into some of the same folks we met on our way out and they were impressed with her locking skills. Tomorrow we plan to vibist the National War Memorial which is nearby before we head back to our home ... read more

I posted the pictures from dinner last night today - better Internet connection. Hope you enjoy them. The weather here is something .... You can go from sunny and nice to cool and almost rainy in less than 15 minutes. So we have had a little of everything today. We also learned today that the canals we are on compete pelted in 1777 - and it is not even the oldest one. We crossed over a rivier today as well, on our canal and we cross a bridge and there is the river below us. Definitely cool. I drove the boat most of morning ... The score when I handed over the boat to Dave was one boat run aground, one near miss, and one bank torpedoed. The boat that ran aground was really because who ... read more

Today was spent going through the English countryside. Lovely country ... Houses with gorgeous gardens and colorful flowers all through this area. We also saw lots of wildlife - both domestic and not domestic .... Lots of sheep, chicken, cattle, pigs and horses (percheron I am told) in yards and fields and the normal ducks, geese and swans in the canals. A busy Saturday on the canals, and we have run into many British folks on holiday over the past several days. We have had queues at the locks a couple of times today. Also saw a candy boat .... Right on the canal with an amazing selection of candy and home made fudge. Today is the coldest day we have had so far, even the natives are in coats and hats today. Docking spots at ... read more

Today was an off day and we spent it here in Rugely. We needed to take on water, get groceries, and do laundry today. The first thing we did was to stop at a water point and get water. We queued up third in line and waited for our turn at the water point. It seemed to take forever to fill ur tank .. Actually only 30 minutes ..it seemed seemed like a lifetime. We met a nice couple at the watou point .. Had been on their boat for about a month and were headed home to Birmingham. Their dog, Charile, very nice nice. The best thing about talking to them, was that they knew where the closest grocery store was. Our next stop was Morrisons - a grocery store - And they had everything ... read more
