Anne asked two days ago if I had any interest in attending a speaking engagement with a Tibetean monk named Mingyur Rinopoche whom would be talking about Tergar Meditation at Johyesa Temple. Recently, I had been getting into relaxing my mind, doing a bit of yoga and meditation. I figured this would be a great way to learn from a top-notch professional about meditation and seek a few pointers along the way. Plus how many times in your life do you actually get to meet a Tibetan monk? Exactly, zero. Accepting the assignment I knew I should prep a few questions so I looked up Tergar Meditation online at http://tergar.org/about/index.shtml Once on the website about tergar meditation I learned he had an anxiety disorder through meditation he overcame this disability. The more I read on the ... read more

For months now all Shauna has wanted to do is attend a Korean Basketball League game. Over the past couple of days we've lounged around the apartment putting photographs together, reading, talking and traveling a bit around where we live. Nothing to big for the one-week Lunar New Year but relaxation. Then I started talking about Chinatown out near Incheon International Airport. How I wanted to go see it, How I needed something to write about and then she opted for a trip to Dandemun Market area instead. One just doesn't pass up a chance to hang out around dandemun market. There is just too much activity going on for someone to pass up on this opportunity. We decided if the day we awoke to was cloudy then we'd go to the market instead of Incheon's ... read more

Alas we awoke to alarm bells ringing at 4:30 am, after six hours of slumber in our beds as we stumbled around beneath the covers wishing for more time to sleep. Pressing her snooze button only once, Shauna bounded out of bed ready to press the coffee pot into action and climb into her already running hot shower. It wasn't yet in me to venture out of the bed where I lay eyes sleepily awake pressing the snooze alarm another couple of times, wishing I hadn't agreed to go on another Korail trip. Thankfully all we had to do this morning was wake up, eat a light snack, drink a fresh cup of java and head out the door to catch the early morning express bus to Hapjeong station because we had packed our day bags ... read more

To tell the truth to the world at large... the walls surrounding our Australian dreams crumbled over the weekend of January 10th. Unexplainable things happened during a class and the school we taught at backed the student rather than (me) the teacher. Even the co-teacher agreed with what had happened throughout the class. It didn't make any sense. Then things changed... I was no longer a teacher in South Korea. We had worked long and hard to get to this place so we could journey into the South Pacific further once we were through a 12-month contract. But what happened, happened. We cannot change those things. Honestly, I did what I needed to at that moment. I wouldn't change what I did. There was no reason to. I made a decision based upon the situation at ... read more

On Saturday morning, I asked Shauna, "would you accompany me today to Unhyeonggung Palace and Jogyesa Temple? They are both in Insadong then we can do a bit of shopping and grab dinner before heading home. How does that sound?" "It sounds like I should bring my camera and be prepared for a day outside. Thanks for inviting me along," she replied with a smile breaking out on her face. Before leaving the apartment I read two small passages in the LP guidebook starting with Unhyeongung; The modest and plain natural-wood design of this minor palace reflects the austere tastes of Hungseon Daewongun (1820-1898), King Gojong's stern and conservative father whose policies included massacring Korean Catholics, excluding foreigners from Korea and closing Confusion schools. Gojong was born and raised here until 1863 when he ascended the ... read more

It's simple... We live in SK, and we have been able to find somethings in various markets around Seoul like the "Foreign Foods Market" where they sell your average North American products at three times the price! Then there are the few shops around various shopping areas who also bring in a few "foreign products" and then try to make a killing on the pricing because there are slim to none and people will do anything for those niblets from their home country! Simply put... If you send us something from the country you are in; Chocolates, Gum, Toothpaste, or anything you can think of that someone might miss when they are traveling around You send us something, anything, to us in South Korea and we will return the favor! And I can tell you this... ... read more

Chopping down the Christmas tree in the woods, decorating it by the fire, eating popcorn and laughing were all parts of those years gone by. Many years went by where I stayed away from anything surrounding Christmas. Friends invited me over, girlfriends, acquaintances from work but I would always decline. Then something happened; I got married. Since our marriage we have been attending the Jackson Family Christmas and slowly I have learned to enjoy myself through the singing of Christmas carols to the eating of treats and goodies all day indoors. We've even managed from time to time to decorate the house with lights, build a snow man and make snow angels, too! Then we were off to South Korea and the only holiday Shauna, dislikes missing is Christmas. I figured we'd have no problems getting ... read more

It's a mystery around here why we get all this wonderful fog... but these are images I captured on a Tuesday night before our Photography Club. About a month after our arrival several teachers approached us about putting together workshops on teaching, teachers around campus how to take better photographs. Once the teachers learned about our extensive visual arts backgrounds in commercial photography, drawing, fine art, illustration, and photojournalism they asked us to put on photography workshops. In October, I decided it was time to offer up to the teachers these Photography Workshops so that by the end of the winter they would have the knowledge about their cameras and be ready to start taking better images because they would learn more about themselves as photographers, what they enjoyed taking images of; architecture, landscapes, people, what ... read more

Fifteen minutes before heading out to a "men only" social gathering, I decided to check on my schedule for the upcoming week to be certain if I needed to reread through any powerpoints of classes I had not taught in a while. As I read through the schedule, an email from Kerry arrived stating she had a few books and dvd's she would like to donate to the "teacher's library" and that I could drop by anytime after 7:00pm. Since her apartment was in the Fiji building and I was on my way to the Earth building in fifteen minutes, I decided to drop on by to pick up the books and dvd's from here instead of putting it off until another evening. Stepping outside the apartment I immediately noticed a few small white flakes drop ... read more

Ten years ago I set out to the local Post Office filing in forms and handing over a check for $65.00 USD paid to the United Postal Services in January 2001. The application was for my first US Passport. The reason I needed to obtain a passport wasn't because I was about to become a jet set traveler but merely I had been accepted to study in the country known as "down-under" or Australia. A decade of travel later my passport was on the verge of reaching the six-months to expire category. Knowing I needed to get my passport renewed prior to April for our wedding anniversary trip, I decided to apply early for the new passport. Ironically, ten years later, I am on the cusp of moving back "down-under" however this time I am not ... read more
