Today, 365 days ago, I started this crazy idea that I could write all my thoughts about travel and stuff it full of photographs. Well... it's still rolling and I'm still traveling :O It's been a great year writing from Travel Blog, adding posts, articles, photographs, and videos. Blog Entries 74 published with 610 Photos, 3 Videos, and 3 Maps !!! Wow, I've been busy. But the best is yet to come... In the upcoming week, Shauna and I are heading for Vietnam. We fly into Ho Chi Minh City and from there we have 14-days of wanderlust and wonderment to fulfill. We'll probably be able from time to time jump onto the blog and write "what's happening?" But the pictures, videos, visual love, will have to await our return to South Korea. Then in August, ... read more

The following "words to live by" were written by Regina Brett of Cleveland, Ohio. She's 90-years old and wants everyone "To celebrate growing older." These are her words... and I wanted to Share them with everyone out there. 1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone. 8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it. 9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck. ... read more

When I first arrived in South Korea, I met this guy named Andrew. Andrew is originally from San Diego, California and has been living in Paju city at English Village for nearly four years. He's become an icon around here as his job is scheduling. He literally coordinates the weekly schedule, every week for all programs, all teachers and all missing or sick personnel. Over the first six months, we mainly played sport with him at the gym but in the last five months he's become a good friend. Only having met his fiancee a few times, we've tried connecting outside of the work-week to enjoy dinners, concerts and sporting events. But with all things in life his commitments to his fiancee Ju Ree and preparations for his wedding day have been getting in the way. ... read more

It wouldn't be a day unless something random happened while we were in Seoul. Obviously we intended on going to the Latin American Festival and it turned out to be Korean. Then we went to the War Memorial, knowing what it would be all about or at least the gist of it. But when you decide to go out for dinner and find a random street concert... well you'll just have to watch and enjoy for yourself. ... read more

After our luncheon at the Latin American Festival we had plenty of time on our hands to do something else with our day. I tried talking Shauna into a peaceful walk around a park near our location but she insisted on doing it "some other time." So, we ended up in Yongsan at the Korean War Memorial Museum. Basically, its a museum surrounding the Korean War. But they have 10-acres of property where tanks, missles, aircraft, helicopters, anti-aircraft guns, howitzers, amphibious tracked tanks, personnel carriers, trucks and more are spread out on the property awaiting decay in the sunshine. They had war machine relics from the South Korea, France, Soviet Union, US and Canada. Plus several monuments, sculptures and fountains. We didn't have time to actually go inside the museum but... Here are some images from ... read more

What happens when you mix Korean district government with three Latin embassies? A schmorgasboard of Latin street food from Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Sicily (don't ask), musicians, Capoeira dancing, dance lessons (to Elvis) and a crowded sidewalk. Today, we set out just before noon heading for the Latin American Festival in Seongbuk-gu near Hansung University. The street festival sounded great when reading their poster (see picture) and overall it was a good old-Korean time. People crowding a street corner, strollers bumping into foreigners swigging back Latin brewed beers, plates of tacos and rellenas' being eaten by the dozens and loud music filling the air. Smiling we exchanged our Korean won for food tickets. Then jumped into line trying the Peruvian papa rellena, Mexican corn tacos filled with fresh homemade salsa, sauteed onions and beef, and two traditional ... read more

I received this email from my younger brother today and found it humorous. I wanted to share it with all of you. Its your choice whether you would or would not live in an area like this? Susan M. on Roxboough Drive, said on Friday afternoon. "He walked down our stairs and across our patio through the open lot onto Brown Fox Trail. Please watch out for your kids, pets, etc. and share this info with our fellow neighbors." ~ May 20th Wow, a freaking bear! Probably make you piss your pants if you weren't paying attention heading out to the garden. Maybe he's just hanging around your yard looking for a snack? Did you have Salmon steaks last night? Forgot to put the bear proof trash cans out again? This reminds me of the movie ... read more

The best things in Korea are nearly free! If traveling to Seoul between October and March then grab the green metro line #2 to the Sports Complex station to pickup a schedule for one of the hometown teams, SK Knights or Samsung Thunder. Both teams play out of the same arena, Jamsil Student Gymnasium. The gym built in the early 1970’s holds 7,500 people without a bad seat in the house. The farthest seat off the court is thirty-rows back. About the same distance as a club suite at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado! Because the seating is limited arrive early to acquire better seats. Game times are usually either 3:00 pm or 5:00 pm; occasionally they will host a late game at 7:00 pm. Once off the subway, at the station locate exit number eight ... read more

Two hundred and fifty-four people gathered into the basement performance hall on Sunday morning, February the 13th at Jogyesa Order Administrative Building to hear Mingyur Rinopche speak about Tergar meditation. This form of meditation helps calm the mind, open the heart and develop insight. From the first smiling word spoken by Mingyur, his being radiated happiness to all those in attendance. Each word chosen to communicate with came from a well of knowledge and wisdom. Every gesture and movement captured the audience’s attention with genuine kindness behind every thought presented. Over the next two hours during the talk he imparted the joys of meditation, techniques to improve meditation and the benefits of meditation. Over the first twenty minutes he spoke about the two most important things “body” and “mind.” Beginning with “body” he spoke about posture. ... read more

There are two major differences when traveling by car instead of by bus or train in South Korea. First the ability to stop willy-nilly wherever the heck you desire and it is your responsibility to pay for gas and toll fees.Because gas prices in South Korea are charged by the liter (a quart), we were invited on a road trip to Gyeongju in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Gyeongju is famous for its artifacts, ruins and relics from the Shilla Dynasty, 57 BC to 935 AD. In addition to the Shilla Dynasty the surrounding mountains and valleys hold a plethora of antiquity. The Gyeongju National Parks have hundreds of hiking trails leading to Buddhist carvings, shrines, stone pagodas and temples. Amazing sights to observe are the large green mounds housing tombs rolling across the cityscape called tumuli. Starting from Paju ... read more
