Two weeks ago, Andrew, Tim and I met a random Korean guy out front of the local GS25 at 3:35 in the morning! We were grabbing a bite to eat after a session of noribong, the korean version of karokee where you are placed in a small room with microphones, sound speakers and a karokee machine! We had been out with a bunch of co-workers but they had all left us at the convenience store. During one of our discussions this random Korean guy started asking us random broken English questions prompting Andrew to speak in Korean. After several minutes of conversation we all walked behind the GS25 heading for our cars. Peering into the backseat of the Korean guys Samsung K7 automobile I spotted box upon box of Red Tiger Ball Paint! Quickly we asked ... read more

For the past three years we have lived In Alberta where seasonal changes have distinct patterns because summer turns into winter at an unprecedented rate but when winter begins to melt transforming into spring we all know summer is always just a blink of the eye away! Unsure of the seasonal changes in the Paju area, we were skeptical of the weather but looking forward to the months ahead. Autumn, in Paju didn't start to take shape until mid-way through October. Then about two weeks later on a Thursday morning, we awoke to the bitter cold in our bedroom. Since our arrival in July we had grown accustomed to the sun peaking over the hill in front of our windows splashing through into our living space with its glorious sun rays. However this morning there was ... read more

Tonight, Shauna and I decided to venture out of "the village" in search of food. Our luck so far has been good with finding places to eat around our little country side town of Beopheung-ri in Paju City. We tried inviting a few people along but to no avail we ended up leaving on our own accord around 6:30pm in search of nutrients. Walking out through the large wooden arched doors, beneath the Gyeonggi English Village sign, heading south towards the immigration office, around the outside stepping out past two EV buses we took a left in front of the replica of Stone Henge. Another twenty meters we reached the top of the hill deciding to cross here instead of at the lights near the bottom of the hill. As we slowly began the crossing at ... read more

Simply put I am behind in the times... During Chuseok, near the end of October or September Shauna and I decided to head towards the Yellow Sea on the East Coast in the province known as Ganwon-do. We didn't do much reading up on the place but had heard about a park full of sculpted "penis-like" or phallic symbols. Unsure what the whole thing was about we read our Lonely Planet guide to produce more information about this phenomenon. And we lucked out as it told the story of the virgin who lost her life which is why this tiny fishing village hit a streak of bad luck at sea. The fisherman figured it could only be one thing, they weren't catching fish because a virgin had died. So, the only smart thing to do was ... read more

Every time I step across the street into the area known as Heyri Art Village, my brains go into overdrive. The ideas begin popping out of my skull about things to draw, design and take photographs of. My mouth begins to salivate for all the delicious cakes, coffees, deserts and sandwiches that each coffee shop provides! I am drawn into each visit because I will always see something different, learn something about an artist, musician, painter or poet or I will find myself in the house of a collector. There are collections inside peoples homes about stamps, posters, cinema, films, cartoon characters, toys, plants, herbs, fauna... basically if you can collect it it might be there! Finally, we come around to those average people who have rented space in the large complex building just trying to ... read more

After the weekend of touch rugby we received an email from Rick in personnel about an opportunity to attend the G-Design Festival at the Kintex Convention Center nearby in Ilsan. As EV teachers and administrators we would receive "free tickets" to the festival because we are a government subsidized company. After reading through the email, I told Shauna we should do it, if we could return in time for our 1:00pm shift? Shauna agreed to the G-Design Festival, if we were back on campus in time to work. By the end of the day we had signed up for the trip to Ilsan the following Monday for the G-Design Festival. There was a small group of people attending from the ODP (One Day Program) and several administrators. Only Shauna and myself came along with from the ... read more

"Brrrring, Brrrrring, duuuu ta duuuu, duuuu ta duuuu, brrrring, brrrring..." the stuffy morning air in the bed room came to life as the alarm clock sitting on the headboard began to buzz. As the sleepy daze in my brain began to adjust to what it was hearing another sound from on the floor began to erupt in the haze which were my brains at 6:15 in the morning! Four hours of sleep! What were we thinking? Oh yea... If we sleep closer to the subway then we will get to the field on time and if we stay in the city then we should get a better nights rest! Toss that idea out the freaking window! The city at night it's not a freaking countryside nap, it was hysterics all night long. Between the people in ... read more

After a month of being on the EV campus, Shauna and I have become accustomed to playing Touch Rugby on Monday Nights after work on the turf field at the Sports Discovery center. Two weeks ago, Captain Tim, asked everyone on campus if they wanted to purchase specially made field shirts with Paju Pirates on the front along with whatever name and number we wanted on the back. Curiosity struck and I wanted to learn why they were getting shirts made? I hunted down Tim, to ask him what was going on with the t-shirts? He simply replied, "we are getting team shirts made to help make everyone feel a part of something bigger around here. A bit of team building through t-shirts." I smiled thinking there was more to this and stated so. That is ... read more

I cannot recall the day when I found out about Seoul Arts Center (SAC) but I imagine it must have come to me from exploring inside the Lonely Planet (LP) South Korea (SK) book we have lying around our apartment. Before leaving Edmonton, I had begun to read about various trips around SK and things to do in Seoul. One of the things I wanted to do most was see a baseball game here in SK to compare it to the baseball games in Japan. Mainly because the fans in Japan are organized with their chants and cheering plus they have synchronized songs they sing and sway to while their teams are playing! It's undoubtedly the best time a fan of any sport can enjoy! With our first baseball game experience already planned for September after ... read more
