Justin... Just to state who "Justin" is, is just not stating enough! However, since we don't have the time to write everything about "Justin" I'll just be brief about who he is and why he came to visit us during our 2nd week in Paju City... Justin met Shauna while studying in Brisbane, Australia during their Master's Degree Program at the Queensland College of Art. Eventually, I bumped into Justin several times while using the "Master's Degree Computer Lab" even though I wasn't in the program but at the time he didn't know this. After some time, Shauna introduced Justin and myself to each other... From this point on Justin enjoyed talking to Shauna but wasn't fond of me (the feeling was semi-mutual). At some point in our distraught adventures in Brisbane, we all became ... read more

Week # 2 August 9th to 13th I decided this week, I would try to do as little yelling as possible at the students here during the classes that I was teaching or co-teaching. I can say my success rate was about 75%. Not bad for the second week of teaching. This week, I taught kinds from Teun Teun Elementary school, Bucheon Bumyung High School, Baekyung Middle School and Kobe Japanese Elementary students. Of the four groups, I interfaced (taught) with the Baekyung Middle School students the most with nine classes of sixteen total. The Japanese kids, I saw in four classes, High School students twice and Teun Teun students once. During the week, you become friends or more likely mentors or "favorite" teacher to some of the kids. These are the kids who understand what ... read more

We'd been at the village less than fourteen days when we heard rumors about a Costco in Ilsan and how wonderful it was because they stocked brands we would know, they had cheese and other assorted foods foreigners couldn't find elsewhere. The problem with Costco as everyone knows is you must be a member. Our mission was to find someone with a Costco card willing to go with us so we could explore the possibilities? On Tuesday we started our search for a Costco member by inquiring to other teacher's during our development time inside the teacher's workroom. During our search for someone with a membership card, Andrea explained that we only needed to borrow a card because we all looked the same! With this information rattling around in my head, I thought she was screwing ... read more

Bumping along down the countryside road, I peered out the front windshield as a new city appeared out across the bridge in front of us as the clock ticked past 10:43 in the morning. Yawning, stretching and pawing towards the ceiling, Shauna and the rest of the passengers awoke with a freight as the bumpy swaying bus drifted down the off ramp turning left onto a skinny two lane road leading us through the small dilapidated homes peaking out behind the green valley trees before approaching the edge of town. As we maneuvered into the seaside parking lot, everyone's eyes were alert with hunger as they peered out the windows wondering what lay ahead? In an instant the organizer came alive taking his position between the seats an all too familiar stance gazing out past every ... read more

Part 3: Boseong Green Tea Plantation As the bus slowly backed into the parking stall, everyone's eyes gleemed with delight that this portion of the trip was complete. A few people still perched over their personal trashbags were cleaning up after themselves due to the erratic driving skills up the steep twisting mountain turns. The organizer climbed on board the bus to give this announcement: "Welcome everyone to the Green Tea Plantation. Here you will have two hours to explore, learn and take pictures about Green Tea. Please enjoy and be back on the bus at 9:30 am. Thank You." Aaron Wow, there must be all sorts of things to see and do here? Two whole hours! Shauna Sounds good to me! Part 2: Yulpo Beach Yielding crazily side to side the entire bus awoke with a fright for their lives as the bus rounded yet another tight twisting turn down a hill laced in an early morning fog. Being three chairs behind the driver peeked out the window thinking we had left Korea all together with the rolling hills popping out beneath the haze, water dripping off the windows and farmers out beginning early morning chores. Three turns later, past a goat and a quick left our bus pulled into the Dangbae Beach Hotel parking lot in Yulpo Beach. Everyone began grabbing their bags and rustling their heads with the backs of their hands to wake themselves at the early morning hours. The organizer climbed on board clipboard in hand to notify us we would have ... read more

During our first couple of days on campus we were told by Dominique about a sponsored trip to Boesong Tea Plantation and if we were interested in going we needed to speak to Rick. We spoke to Rick the very next day when we went to get our medical exams done about the Tea Plantation Trip for teachers who were interested? "How did you two find out about it?" Rick inquired "Earlier while we were walking around the campus with Dominique, she was explaining to us some of the benefits we get as teachers, like this Tea Plantation trip," Shauna kindly replied. I sat there as quiet as possible since I didn't want to destroy this opportunity, if there was one? Rick, looked at Shauna then looked at me, then back to Shauna stating he couldn't ... read more

Before twelve-fifty in the afternoon, Shauna and I walk into the main doors of the City Hall building, keeping to the right we go around the first wall and over to the finger identification system mounted on the wall. Here we place one of our fingers into the identification system to "clock-in" for our shift. The shift assigned to us for August is 1pm to 9pm Monday to Thursday, Friday 9am to 6pm with weekends off. From this moment onwards you are rady to face the kids, other teachers and people who are inside the village that day! From here, you turn around walk back out the front doors across the pathway past the largest fountain on campus, around the Fiji building to the Surfing Safari building to meet up with the other teachers, grabbing clipboards, ... read more

Day Two at Gyeonggi English Village If one word could describe an entire day then I would choose lackluster for this one... or would I? Both Shauna and I woke up early in the morning around six, we looked at each other, rolled over to check the clock, jumped up out of bed, hit the Air Conditioner 'on button' turning the temperature to twenty-two degrees Celsius (71.6f), climbing back into bed, kissing the other one and rolling over stuffing our heads into our pillows. A mere two hours later I steamrolled Shauna, as she slept in a deep dark sleep and fell through the bathroom door, jarring my knee against the toilet! I yelped several mumblings about not being awake enough for this, did my business and climbed slowly back into bed only after raising the ... read more
