Monday Dan and I had another tee time at another golf course, the Royal Kaanapali. Marilyn and Jan chose to take glass blowing lessons at a place called Moana Glass and create their own keepsake of their Maui trip. Make sure you check out the photos to see their finished products. We had perfect weather for golf and were paired up with a couple real nice guys, one from the Yakima Valley in Washington and one from Palm Springs. It was also nice that we were all about the same skill level. It was an up and down match, with me winning the first 9 holes and Dan winning the second nine holes handily. I did manage to squeak out winning the 18 hole game, though. By Marilyn: Off to Moana Glass Company for a lesson ... read more

(Just a reminder that you can enlarge photos by clicking on them and comments at the bottom are always appreciated) It was another gorgeous day Sunday, so we decided to drive over to the other side of the island near Wailuku to visit the Ioa Valley Monument. It's a very beautiful, lush valley surrounded by tall mountains in the rainforest part of Maui, which is the opposite side of the island from Lahaina. Inside the valley is the rock formation known as the Iao Needle. The native Hawaiians thought it was the phallic symbol of the God of the Sea, Kanaloa. This was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai waged between the invading King Kamehameha forces from Oahu and the Maui forces of King Kehekili. The battle was so horrible that they said the dead ... read more

All four of us enjoyed the whale watching we did in the past. If I haven't mentioned it before, We went to Hawaii together in 2009. So this is the second time the four of us have been on Maui together. Jan and I said that any time we go to Maui, we would do a whale watching cruise. Our cruise was with the Pacific Whale Foundation and all of their proceeds go to the preservation of the whales. The vast majority of the whales here near Maui are Humpback Whales. These whales spend their summers near Alaska where they feed like crazy and the winter here in the Hawaiian waters where they mate and have their calves. These whales are approximately 45 tons and about 45 feet in length. We were told that while nursing ... read more

I probably haven't mentioned it, but the weather so far has not been typical of Maui, even in February. A couple days were marred by passing showers and the temperatures were below normal. The average temperature here at this time is about 65 F at night and 76-80 F in the day. There has recently been a system that has kept rotating around the islands bringing exceptional rain. They even got snow last Sunday on Haleakala volcano down to 6,200 ft. above sea level, the lowest recorded elevation to receive snow on Maui. Thursday was the only really bad day so far. It rained a lot and there was some flash flooding going on. The temperature only got up to 65 F that day, Valentine's Day. We were going to drive to the Iao Valley on ... read more

Yesterday after enjoying the waves and rainbows from our lanai all morning and enjoying a nice breakfast cooked by Marilyn, we worked up the energy to go down to the pool and lie around there soaking up some sun. I guess we deserved a lazy day. The weather was gorgeous, 78 and sunny, nice for lying around. The big motivation for this day was to go to downtown Lahaina for dinner at the original Cheeseburger in Paradise. Lahaina is an old, historic whaling town and picturesque. We sat upstairs in the open air with a great view of the old whaling docks and sea. The next day Dan and I had a tee time at the Kapalua Golf Course and Marilyn and Jan were going to do a zipline. We had a great breakfast at the ... read more

Everything went just fine on our flight here, but once we got here, things took a slight turn for the worse. No big deal, just minor annoyances. Enough to make you wonder if this was not going to be a real good vacation. After checking in to our resort, we headed to the supermarket to buy some provisions. We then headed to Java Jazz for dinner. Dan, Marilyn and Jan went inside and when I was getting out of the Nissan Armada ( a very nice SUV) The guy in a pickup truck next to me says "Did she have to hit my car so hard with that door?" I thought, what is he talking about? Jan got out on his side. I've never seen her bang a door into a vehicle. And I never heard ... read more

Tomorrow early morning we depart O'Hare airport for Maui with Dan & Marilyn Flaherty, our traveling buddies. Thankfully, United reinstated their non-stop flight from Chicago to Kahului airport on Maui. That eliminates a layover in Honolulu for an extra hour or two. It's a long flight (about 8 hours from Chicago), but well worth it once you get there. It will be a welcome break from winter. ... read more

I'm sure everyone is tired of the cold by now since it has really clobbered all of the Midwest. But, again it was -25 last night in Land O' Lakes. Have to pass on what the owner of Bauer's Dam, Donna, said yesterday; "Polar Vortex my butt. This is what we used to call winter." This is very true of the weather way up here. Sub zero temperatures are kind of the norm over the years here. It was going to be a little warmer today with a high of -5 forecast. We saddled up and headed down the trail around 10:30 with the temperature still -18. At least there was very little wind. We were dressed for it with thermal underwear, warm pants, 3 layers on top, super warm boots, very good snowmobile bib pants ... read more

The temperature got down to -25 last night with a wind chill of -54. Not as cold as Orland Park, IL, though. There it was -27! We were in no hurry to get on the trails this morning since it was forecast to be the coldest day this week with a high of -10. We decided we would take short rides to pit stops and warm up. We didn't leave until about noon. We rode from the Gateway to a very nice bar/restaurant on Big Twin Lake. It was a 16 mile ride there. We had a nice lunch there and then rode another 10 miles over to Bauer's Dam on Buckatabon Lake in Conover, WI. After relaxing there with some coffee, we rode back to the Gateway, a ride of 20 miles. All totaled, we ... read more

Well, everyone knows the middle of the country is in a deep freeze and it's even colder here in the north woods of Wisconsin. It got down to -14 degrees last night about 8:00 PM when we went to dinner at Brew's Pub in Land O' Lakes. The forecast high for the day was right around zero, so we thought we would ride in Wisconsin instead of Michigan because the trails are in the woods and twisty, which keeps you warmer. The pit stops are closer together in Wisconsin also. We were going to ride with both Pat and Dawn Keefe and met them at a trail intersection about 7 miles southwest of town. The Frosty Club in Land O' Lakes groomed the trails again last night and they were nice and smooth. All of the ... read more
