A few weeks ago, we decided that we would make a day trip to Kauai. We looked into taking some kind of boat trip or private flight, but it is too far from Maui, roughly 250 miles, so we ended up booking flights there and back for the same day on Hawaiian Air. We wanted to do one of the helicopter tours of the island. None of us had been to Kauai before and with only one day, it should show us a lot of what many feel is the most beautiful of the Hawaiian Islands. We booked a 2:00 PM flight with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. It was looking awfully cloudy up at the tops of the mountains and it turned out that our one hour flight was cut short after a half hour because we ... read more

Today we made the drive up to the top of Haleakala. It was a perfect day for it. There weren't even the normal clouds around the mountain. As a matter of fact, it was quite warm for this elevation...59 degrees. Normally it's in the 30's or 40's. From the floor of the ocean, the total height of Haleakala is over 29,000 ft, which would make it taller than Mt. Everest. Haleakala is the dormant volcano that comprises all of the largest section of the island of Maui. It is humongous, rising to just over 10,000 ft above sea level. It's a pretty long drive up to the summit from sea level at the base, something like 38 miles. Climbing 10,000 ft from sea level requires a lot of twists and turns, but this is much easier ... read more

We left our resort on Kaanapali Beach around 9:00 AM. I warned Jackie that it would end up being a 12 hour day and I was pretty darn close. Our first stop was Charley's in Paia. Paia is the town that is at the beginning of the Hana Highway. Jan and I just stopped there on probably our second drive to Hana quite a few years ago. Way back then we learned that Charley's was a favorite hangout for Willie Nelson, who has a home near there. The story goes that he comes in and plays whenever he's around. There have been many other famous musicians that have played there, too. They serve a great breakfast there and also some great Bloody Marys. You have to be fortified for the long drive ahead. It's a mere ... read more

We went whale watching today on the Hawaiian Ocean Project boat and were very lucky. We had two whales playing going back and forth under the boat. Jan and I have done several of these whale watching cruises and I guess we've always been lucky because we've always had whales close to the boats. Today was no exception. I'll let the pictures and video tell the story. ... read more

We arrived at our resort, the Aston Kaanapoli Shores around 9:30 Hawaiian Time, 1:30 AM Central. It sure is a long day of travel from Chicago to paradise, but it is worth it. I swear that years ago, United flew directly from Chicago to Maui. Maybe I'm nuts, but no airline does it anymore, so it's 9 hours to Honolulu, an hour wait and a half hour flight to Kahului, Maui, followed by a 45 drive to Lahaina/Kaanapoli Beach. We're in a suite right on the ocean and there's nothing like falling asleep to the sound of the waves crashing. As usual, the forecast is 79-82 and sunny every day for the next five days. Can that get boring?? After hanging around the pool in the morning, we headed into the town of Lahaina for lunch. ... read more

Jan and her friend, Jackie have been friends since their college days many years ago at SIU. They started a tradition of making an annual "road trip" back then. Their road trips evolved into trips all over America together. I guess this could be considered another of their road trips and for the first time, I get to go along. When I retired, I promised Jan that since she has always been so good about all of the snowmobiling I do in the winter and even goes with me on some of the trips, that I would take her somewhere warm and beautiful to get away from the Chicago winter. So I guess this is a combination trip. This morning, we are heading to O'Hare Airport to depart for Maui, Hawaii. We've all been there before ... read more

Having grown up in a big city, I generally don't visit big cities on vacations, so when Marilyn suggested we spend our last couple days in Florida on South Beach, I wasn't so sure about it. Now I'm really glad we went. It was beautiful there. On the drive from Hawks Cay to South Beach, I wanted to see if we could find the location where they filmed the classic movie, "Key Largo, " with Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson and Lionel Barrymore. It was directed by one of my favorite directors, John Huston. I'm crazy for old movies, and this is one of my all time favorites. I remembered having seen some kind of sign about it on our drive to Key West a week ago. Since it was also lunch time, we ... read more

Capt. Steve got us back to Stock Island Marina right on time at 3:00PM and we made the one hour trip to Hawks Cay. Jan and I stayed here for ten days a couple winters ago and really enjoyed it. It's on its own little key called Duck Key. Also friends of mine from my golf course, Old Oak, Angelo and Kelly were married here last year and everyone who attended loved it. We were booked into the Sunset Villas area of the resort. It was a two story condo with LARGE bedrooms or maybe they just seemed that big after 4 nights on the boat. Our back porch had a very nice view and we brought our drinks out there to watch the sunset. After the sun set, we all felt too tired to venture ... read more

Day 5: Kit Ship's Log--Weather: Partly Cloudy, Temps Forecast around 70, Wind north at 15 knots--Sick Bay Report: Dan recovered from cold, Marilyn NOW has the head cold, Capt. Steve back pain slightly better. Last Day at Sea. Since this would be our last day of sailing and we had to drive to Hawks Cay Resort near Marathon Key this evening, we told Capt. Steve that we wanted to get back to the marina around 3:00. That meant we would only get 2 delicious meals from Kathy today. Capt. Steve suggested that we sail to the south to get a full sailing experience since the north wind we've had all week persisted. Marilyn now has Dan's cold just as he has gotten rid of it, as I note in the log. Poor girl. First she has ... read more

Day 4: Kit Ship's Log--Weather: forecast to be partly cloudy, high around 70 with northerly winds and 2 foot seas--Sick Bay Report: Captain Steve still bent over with back pain, Dan's cold almost gone, Bob's right shoulder still hurting and useless. It's Valentine's Day! This morning during our daily briefing with Capt. Steve, we all decided on going back to Stock Island for the evening. Tomorrow would be our last day of sailing. Capt. Steve had other suggestions, but we wanted to walk around on land again. Kathy provided another great breakfast before we got going. We were able to go under sail again. It really is peaceful. On the way, we passed by a very pretty island where they filmed the old TV show, McHale's Navy, starring Ernest Borgnine. It's one of the shows I ... read more
