On the hop-on-hop-off bus, we passed the Printemps store, and I decided that I would need to come back and see the shops later. In the evening, I walked from the Opéra Metro to the Galeries Lafayette and then along Boulevarde Haussman to the Printemps store. All the buildings were lit up with fairy lights, and the Christmas displays in the windows.... read more

Having left the Opéra in the afternoon, I made my way to Saint-Germain des Près. Once there I walked along Boulevarde Saint-Germain. There were plenty of food and flower stalls along the boulevard. I came across the Église de Saint Germain des Prés. Unfortunately it was either closed, or I couldn’t find the entrance. I continued along the boulevard looking in windows of pastries and enjoying the atmosphere. I caught the metro back to the Opéra / Madeline to explore some more at night. After the Second World War, the neighbourhood became the centre of intellectuals and philosophers, actors and musicians.... read more

Leaving Église de la Madeleine in the afternoon, the hop-on-hop-off bus made it’s way along the Boulevard des Capucines to the Palais Garnier, home of Opéra de Paris. The façade is amazing! Unfortunately I didn’t have any tickets, so couldn’t get inside. I came back after dark to see the illuminated façade. It was very busy, and there were lots of people around just enjoying themselves. The theatre is also often referred to as the Opéra Garnier and historically was known as the Opéra de Paris or simply the Opéra. The Paris Opera now mainly uses the Palais Garnier for ballet. The building foundation stones were laid in 1862.... read more

My next stop on the hop-on-hop-off bus and it headed across the Pont Alexandre III and towards the Av. des Champs-Élysées. We turned right and then headed towards Place de la Concorde. At Place de la Concorde we turned left and headed up Rue Royale (Royal Street). At the end of Rue Royal is the Église de la Madeleine (Madeline Church). I also came back after dark to check out the sights again. This time I went into the church and walked around it. L'église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine is a Roman Catholic church occupying a commanding position in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. The Madeleine Church was designed in its present form as a temple to the glory of Napoleon's army.... read more

One of stops on the hop-on-hop-off bus was the Hôtel des Invalides. I went twice – once on the first round of the bus, and once again when the bus came back to the area. The trip went past my hotel and through some pretty cool streets. At one point, I looked over the edge of the bus and saw what I presume is a typical Parisian sight – someone riding a bike with baguettes on the back! When I came back in the afternoon, I walked from the southern entrance, to the northern entrance. In the Cour d'honneur was a police parade. Some people were getting awards of some sort. The front entrance (northern end) has a magnificent façade that looks over towards the Seine, and a very ornate gate. There is also ... read more

With the sun up and the sky looking boring, I headed back across the river, and saw the lines for the tower were quite short. I decided I would wait and go up! I got the pass to the top and was in the second lift of those that didn’t book. I stopped first at the lower platform and then headed to the upper platform. Constructed in 1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair, the Eiffel Tower is the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world and is 324 metres tall. The top level's upper platform is 276m above the ground, the highest accessible to the public in the European Union.... read more

I had seen people across the other side of the river, and decided it would be a great place to watch the sun come up over the horizon, and I was NOT disappointed! Fabulous idea. I was able to see the sun come up behind the Eiffel Tower and get some silhouette photos of the tower. The best jetlag morning ever! Built for the Exposition Internationale of 1937, the old Palais du Trocadéro was demolished and replaced by the Palais de Chaillot, which now tops the hill.... read more

I’ve never really liked jetlag, but it was a good thing this morning. I was up long before the sun was, so I headed out to watch the sunrise, and I’m so glad I did. This post and the next one cover the sunrise I saw. Firstly I headed to the École Militaire and Champ de Mars. It was cold and there was frost on the leaves on the ground. The colour in the sky was slowly increasing. I kept walking and got to the Eiffel Tower. Again, the colours in the sky were amazing.... read more

This morning I got up early and watched the sunrise come up behind the Eiffel Tower. The average temperature was 5 Degrees C (40F). Here is a map of where I walked. I did most of the green and part of the orange routes from L’Open Tour. I found it quite good. They have headsets with various languages. Attached is a map of the locations I visited. Places I visited included: • Sunrise over Champ de Mars and the Eiffel Tower • Sunrise at the Trocadéro / Palais de Chaillot • Up the Eiffel Tower • Hôtel des Invalides • Rue Royale and Église de la Madeleine • Opéra de Paris (Palais Garnier) • Saint-Germain des Près • Printemps and Galeries Lafayette • Rue Tronchet and Place de la Concorde at night By this time I ... read more
